I've been thinking about this for a bit and thought I'd share little writing exercises that I know have helped me personally but have also helped out a lot of other people. This is one that I've already mentioned.

Writing Exercise #1: Getting to Know a Character

One way to help with the characterization of a character is to write a few paragraphs about going into their room. What do you see? What does it look or smell like? Is laundry all over the floor, does this mean they're mess? What does it mean if they have Star Trek posters on their wall vs. Twilight posters? Think about your character and how all of these items help create them as a person.

Whenever we go into a persons room, it takes one glance to get to know a lot about them. If that's real life then that must mean it's the same for the characters in our story. Therefore, test this out. Try to write a passage about their room, 5,000 words at maximum. There is no minimum. Once you finish, post the links here so everybody can read your piece. There's also a lot that we can learn from each others writing style.

Josh | 18 comments I wish I still had my writing exercises from class. If you have any more of these, I'd love it if you'd post them.

Zaira's Bookshelf (zairasbookshelf) Great idea! I'll do it when I've got time.

I'll try. I was just sent all my work from my class so I'm digging through them to find the exercises again. They were so helpful.
