During a recent chat with Greek friends regarding the holiday of Halloween - which is either unknown or regarded with suspicion here in Greece - I brought up the Lebanese holiday of Eid Al Barbara as another example of a celebration involving trick-or-treating for kids.
Here are some links about this Middle Eastern version of Halloween:
St. Barbara's treats
The Lebanese Halloween and more masks of scary politicians
In (Muslim) West Beirut we simply called the treat "Barbara," on the net I've come across several names for the cooked wheat berries -> 'amieh - sneyniyeh - sleeha (recipe in French).
For those of you who are planning a trip in Montreal (Qc) during the next two weeks, don't forget to see a show, watch a film or participate in a discussion group during the Festival du Monde arabe http://www.festivalarabe.com/main/?la...) !

Even if all the trees on earth were pens, and the ocean inks,
with seven more oceans added to it,
the words of Allah would not be exhausted:
for Allah is infinite in power and wisdom”
– [Qur’an 31:27]
May this Ramadan be a month of love
A month of compassion
And a month of blessings
For all of you and your families
Ramadan Kareem!

Will do when my book arrives.

Wow, I am surprised that Zuckerberg recommends reading Muqadimma. It is indeed a very insightful book on the development of societies and its institutions. One of my favorite sociological books, enjoy reading it!

What a wonderful introduction to the book Ikram! Now, I'll be even more excited for it to arrive at my doorstep! You must drop by and visit the thread when I open it.

Some parts are really weird and akward (regarding racial/cultural issues).. But that was apparently how people thought back then.
Nevertheless, a must-read.

Wonderful! I look forward to seeing you there. I'll open the thread when my book arrives.
