Use this thread if you are reading through the book and you want to talk about it. For example, if you are anything like me, if something crazy happens in a book I always want to talk about it right after it happens! It's also nice to discuss with others who are reading through it. Please make sure at the top of every thing you post you have a SPOILER warning and say up to what page you are on.

I've been DYING to pick up this book. I've heard such wonderful things. Any of you planning on reading this one?

message 3: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I read it a couple of months ago on my kindle for iphone app. I absolutely loved it. I can't wait for everyone else to start discussing it and hear what they think!

message 4: by Tamara (new)

Tamara (tamaralee) I absolutely loved this book! I read it last week. I got it for Christmas and could not wait until January 1st to start reading it. I can't wait for everyone else to start discussing it!

message 5: by Megan (new)

Megan I just started this weekend, but have been wanting to read it for awhile now. I am already 1/3 of the way through, and I have company staying at my house... I just can't put it down.

message 6: by Megan (new)

Megan Spoiler Alert...

I can't believe that Skeeter left her satchel behind at the Legion meeting and Hilly picked it up. I was so relieved that she hadn't read the interviews of Aibileen and Minny. Or did she??? Can't wait to read more. I need the weekend to come so I can get some reading done.

Amy Harrison | 26 comments So far, I can't put it down! This is such a great book, and I'm familiar with Jackson, MS. In fact, my grandmother grew up in Jackson during this time period, and she says it's amazing how accurate it is.

I am on page 148. So far, I really love it.

Found this to be extremely funny: "I give in and light another cigarette even though last night the surgeon general came on the television set and shook his finger at everybody, trying to convince us that smoking will kill us. But Mother once told me tongue kissing would turn me blind and I'm starting to think it's all just a big plot between the surgeon general and Mother to make sure no one ever has any fun."

I am about 2/3 of the way through and I don't want it to end. :(

Does it frustrate any of you, the way things were? Maybe they still are some places. I just feel like this wasn't that long ago, and they acted like that! It is bothersome.

message 11: by Amy (new)

Amy Harrison | 26 comments It did frustrate me. I kept trying to reach through the book to strangle Hilly and Elizabeth. Everything was so ... AAAHHH!

message 12: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Lauren (ashleyllauren) I just started it last night and flew through the first few chapters. I plan I reading it over lunch today at work too. We'll see how far I get :-) I'm really enjoying it so far, it flows well. Although I have to say that sometimes the language in it bothers me. I feel like it kind of goes back and forth between regular narrative and the dialect. Maybe I'm just reading over it and it's the dialect the whole time but every once in a while a word really seems to stick out.

I finished it last night, well this morning about 2:00. I couldn't stop reading. I am bummed it is over. So Good!

Ashley, the dialect part is wierd because so many different people are talking. Some of the characters talk different depending on who they are talking too.

message 14: by Tamara (new)

Tamara (tamaralee) I can't wait for the movie to come out. Supposed to be in the fall sometime!

message 15: by Nicole (new)

Nicole momming_and_reading (nicoledoliner) | 3 comments God I HATE Hilly! I'm about 250pgs in.

It gets better, then worse, then better, then worse, etc.

message 17: by Annie (new)

Annie Hartman (anniebananie) | 242 comments I didn't even know this was this month's read! But I'm so excited! I haven't done a group read in a few months and I'm LOVING this book! I am reading it on my Kindle and I'm not sure how to determine what page I am on. Does anyone know?
I too absolutely detest Hilly. And Elizabeth. But I suppose that's the point. I also get a little annoyed with Skeeter's naivety but I suppose I would probably be just as ignorant if I were in that situation.
I like Minny's story best. I'm dying to know what is wrong with Celia and I love that John knew Minny was there all along-- and that he wasn't mad. Although, it was a little predictable that she was going to be caught before Celia's 'deadline' was up.

Hope everyone enjoys! I look forward to more discussions, especially after I'm done! :)

message 18: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Lauren (ashleyllauren) Edit to my previous statement - I got over the dialect quickly. I just wasn't used to it, and now (I just finished) I'm really glad Stockett wrote the language the way she did!

message 19: by Annie (new)

Annie Hartman (anniebananie) | 242 comments I had a tough time getting into it because of the language but now I love it and I too am really glad Stockett used it. Actually, like I said, Minny's story is my favorite and she had the most dense southern dialect of all the characters.
*SPOILER!!** (Have to say I can't believe about Celia's miscarriage! When she said she was drinking I just assumed that was it-- I was shocked! But touched by how things happened between Minny and Celia)

I have to say though I am beginning to get pretty caught up in Skeeter's love story!

message 20: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I'm just starting this- only about 20 pages in but it's interesting so far. I'm excited to get further into it based on how much you all are loving/ loved it!

message 21: by Nicole (new)

Nicole momming_and_reading (nicoledoliner) | 3 comments Just finished it. I LOVED it. The ending left a little to be desired, but I think everything will be okay in the end for all of those women.

Heather, I had a rough time getting into it for some reason. Keep going-- it's worth it!

Nicole (nkb992) | 35 comments I'm about 80 pages in and I love this book already!

I agree. I was begging for more at the end.

message 25: by Jess (new)

Jess I'm around page 270 - spoilers:

I don't usually bring books to work, but I happened to yesterday because of the snow, and it just so happened to be Celia's miscarriage was the part that I had the pleasure to read at my desk. I'm a little behind, but I hope to finish it by the weekend.

message 26: by Chris (new)

Chris | 93 comments Just started. I was reading through another book so I didn't technically get around to this one in Jan. but I'm hoping to be done in a few days.

I was soooo relieved when I found out she wasn't drinking. That's the part I'm at now. Gonna try and finish today.
