Jen | 30 comments I'm game for a +12 in '12 since I didn't really play this year. I came in a little late and had no idea how many books I'd read the previous year, and I wasn't creative enough to think of other ways to interpret the challenge (like reading the 11 oldest books on my TBR list).

Dawn | 187 comments +12 in '12? I don't know - it's a little intimidating. By the time the year is over that would put me at nearly 100 books for 2012. Hmmm???

That said - I'm just a few books past my goal for 2011. My goal now is to simply finish the two books that I've started this year and have yet to finish - The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee and A Bright Shining Lie John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam by Neil Sheehan .

I still have quite a ways to go in A Bright Shining Lie John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam by Neil Sheehan , so that will be the big challenge!

Karen Brown (khbrown) | 99 comments I've finished my 85th book and have completed my 11+ in 11 reading challenge (although I'm still committed to finishing the 600+ pages of "War and Peace.")

I've been thinking about a reading challenge for 2012. Don't want to add 12 more to my 85 read this year. Think I'm pretty much at capacity for reading at an enjoyable pace. My reading challenge for 2012 will be to read 12 books recommended by Michael and 12 books recommended by Ann in the final segment of their weekly "Books on the Nightstand" book podcast. By the end of the year, they will each have contributed one dozen books to my "nightstand." Hmmm. This just might be too easy.

Have I got some great books lined up for you in 2012... So many things I've read and loved *this* year come out *next* year!

Helen Dunn (hmonkeyruns) | 110 comments I did it! I finally hit 55 books and met my goal. Whew!

Now I can relax for the last two weeks of the year and think of a new challenge for 2012.

message 159: by Jay (new)

Jay Bullman My prose book total last year was 27 so my goal this year was a nice round 40. I'm going to finish at a possible 65 so I am happy with that amount. I also am hoping to get my comic trade total up into the 80's with my 31 trades in 31 days in December. I think my 12 in 12 goals will be:
1. 12 classics-2 will be Dickens
2. 12 non-fictions-I tend to neglect this but will check out some of the stuff Ann and Michael have recommended in order to remedy this.
3. 12 books that have been sitting on my shelf longest. This will probably intertwine with the two previously mentioned.

I would also like to read 12 500pg+ books this year but I'm a bit nervous that I'm biting off way more than I can chew.

Love to hear other ideas for what people are planning other than pure number of books. This group has definitely helped me tap back into making reading a priority in my life.

I'm going to aim high next year: 12 x12 = 144
I would like to tackle the oldest 12 titles on my TBR list, 12 Classics and, 12 titles from BOTNS authors. I would also like to get up to the 12th title in The Dresden Files series (audio), the Fables series (gn) and the Walking Dead series (gn)

I too plan to tackle my oldest 12 in my tbr list. Then I also will do the 12 oldest books I have in my personal library waiting to be read. Oddly there is not much overlap. The are several classics in both those lists so I feel like I didn't want a seperate classics challenge. My third challenge is going to be one new release a month. This came from when I was trying you vote for books of the year here on Goodreads and I realized I hadn't read much from 2011.

Earlier this year I read a book by a British author called "Reading from Home." She spent a year just reading the books she already owned. I have such a backlog that I need to do that. However, I couldn't rule out all new books because Ann and Michael suggest so many alluring ones. So I decided my goal for 2012 is to read 3 old books (i.e. ones I already own) for every 1 new book.

message 163: by Bobbi (new)

Bobbi | 153 comments I like this "Reading from Home" idea; I must confess I could keep myself busy for several years just reading the books I already own, so I think I'll borrow Readnponder's idea of mixing it up.

I joined a TBR challenge for 2012. I committed to reading at least 12 titles from my stacks even though I literally have hundreds of titles clamoring for my attention! I am an unapologetic book hoarder; but even I am beginning to realize the hazard that my home office has become! I'm now pondering what to do with the books I *have* read. It's very difficult (but necessary) for me to decide what to let go.

message 165: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianec) | 46 comments I like the idea of reading from home. I too think I am at capacity for number of books I can read in a year at an enjoyable pace. I'm not really interested in trying to cram 12 more books in. My to be read pile is huge and keeps growing. Looking back at what I have read this year, I realize that very few of these books came from my shelves. For 2012 I think I may try to read at least 50/50. That is going to be a real challenge because Ann and Michael keep tempting me with new discoveries. And as my many failed attempts to diet can attest to, I have a low threshold for temptation. 3 more books to go in order to hit my goal of 50.

I like this concept. I also have tons of books at home but am constantly intrigued by new ones. Perhaps if I quit listening to podcasts with more book ideas, it would be an easier task!

message 167: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda I love this idea of "Reading from Home"! Since I am working more than double than I ever have, I can't add 12 books to my challenge - but I sure can make a goal of reading at least 12 books that are on my shelves!

message 168: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments I'm going to try to do +12 in '12. I've officially read 71 books in 2011 so far, which doesn't include a handful of re-reads, so I'll make my 2012 goal 85 (which will also not include rereads).

My to-read in 2012 list will include the 12 oldest titles on my TBR list, 6-10 Dickens, presidential biographies, and books written by the Retreat authors. It feels a little ambitious, but I'm hopeful.

message 169: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished 73 books in 2010, including "War and Peace". That was sort of a personal best, and I knew I wouldn't be able to read 84 books in a one year time frame, so I didn't even try. In 2011 (so far) I've finished 39 books, and may get a few more in before the holidays, so my prediction was accurate.

message 170: by Lil (new)

Lil | 216 comments I set a goal of 50 books for this year, which I will not meet. Currently at 44 and may get a couple more in before year's end. This has been a short on time year. My other goal was 20 books for my TBR stack and I got 9 in, so my main goal for next year will be 9 +12 of anything I already own.

I did complete the What's in a Name Challenge, which was a lot of fun and I may do that again.

I owe you all a correction and an apology. Earlier, I gave the subtitle instead of the main title to a book. The real title is: "Howards End is on the Landing: A year of reading from home" by Susan Hill.
Sorry for the confusion.

message 172: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 55 comments These posts have really got me thinking. I've been keeping track of what I read since 2002, but never analyzed it. Since I'm now looking at it more closely, I see that I'm reading an average of about 50 books per year. Then again, this year I only read 39; I guess I was busier than I realized. I would love to hear your opinions on how you "count" books that you quit reading after more than 150 pages ... I don't usually count those, but I did read good portions of about ten books (even up to 300 pages) before deciding they just weren't worth my time.

message 173: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 48 comments After listening to the podcast and reading all your great ideas I'm going to adopt two of them for myself. My goal this year is to read 12 books by foreign authors, and to read 12 books that I already own. Hopefully I'll be able to accomplish both. Thanks for the ideas guys!

message 177: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen (chocolategardener) | 1 comments Just missed my reading goal for 2011; read 72 but my goal was 75. Maybe I missed a few. Think I'll stay at 75 for another year---seems to be my max. Real (fantasy) goal would be 1 real book and 1 audiobook a week, but I don't see that happening. My 2012 challenge will be 1 new book for each 2 old books from my un-read collection.

message 178: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 12 comments I made it!! Squeaked in at the last moment by the skin of my teeth and I will admit that when I realized I was one book short on the last day of the challenge I picked up We The animals for the sole reason that it was short. It turned out to be a very enjoyable memorable read and it helped me complete the 113 th book of the year. Yayy!
