What have you seen lately?
I love you, man, your typical bromance movie, but I enjoyed it too. It was great to see Rashida Jones in a leading role. I like her.
You didn't like Slumdog Millionaire?! What? LOL I loved it. I thought it was a great, uplifting movie.

Country Strong, not much of a Gwenyth Paltrow fan, but I liked this. The music was surprisingly good considering none of the leads, except Tim McGraw, are professional singers. And the story was alright, if a bit choppy in parts. I thoroughly enjoyed new to me actor, Garrett Hedlund. He had a serious bedroom voice in the movie, and throw the southern drawl on top of it, and I was a goner.
I can't remember if I mentioned this way way up thread, but I've also seen The Company Men, with Ben Affleck. Liked that.
I've seen at least one more flick, what is it ...?
Ah ... I remember, The Last Three Days with Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks. Kinda predictable and implausible, but okay, I liked it. It's interesting that a barrel-bellyed and double-chinned Crowe can still command leading man status. Elizabeth Banks'career would've never survived, but Russell Crowe's does.

So even though I've been having a bitch of time at work lately I managed to see:
Night Catches Us, Tanya Hamilton's debut feature starring Kerry Washington and Anthony Mackie. This is a film that can only be appreciated after multiple viewings. It was a bit slow to develop, but after watching it the second time I was able to appreciate the subtle undertones of the story. I've always found Kerry Washington's acting a bit forced, and she almost seemed too refined for the vibe the film was going for.
Directorially the film was very atmospheric. I liked that a lot. For a rookie director that was a pretty clear cut signature. Developing your own style should be the aim of any good director, but many new directors tend to just fall in with the rest. It was refreshing to see that Hamilton stood out from this flock.
True Grit, finally I got around to seeing this film and as always the Coen brothers didn't disappoint. Cinematic as always I really enjoyed the movie. I agree that Hailee Steinfeld did a great job as her onscreen father's avenging angel. Jeff Bridges was hilarious in parts, but Matt Damon, who I normally like, was sorely miscast. It was a very poignant film, especially the ending. It made me tear up.
The Blind Side, nice little movie. Bullock was pretty good, while Tim McGraw must have laughed all the way to bank considering he probably got paid a shit load of money for being a prop. Seemed like all he had to do was show up to work for all the acting he did. Granted this being Bullock's film, it probably wasn't his fault. Anyway, I like the film overall. It came across as bit self-congratulatory here and there, but for the most part it was an enjoyable family film.
I also saw an advance viewing of The Ledge about two guys (one a fundamentalist christian and the other an atheist) in love with the same woman. The film is written as a criticism of religion, but was unable to practice its message of tolerance. The atheist who challenged the christian's beliefs was just as obnoxious and unlikeable as the christian was. I didn't really like it.
The Switch, probably the most emotion I've ever seen Jennifer Aniston showed in a movie. lol It was aright. A highly implausible and silly premise, but good enough entertainment.

Not a particularly good movie but a decent 2 hour escape. I like medieval witch movies.
I plan to catch Super 8 with my niece this weekend. Haven't seen Season of the Witch. I'll keep it in mind for when I'm in the mood for a witch story.
I did see a pretty decent horror flick the other day called Seconds Apart. It's about a pair of identical twins who can control other people's minds using telekinesis. They use their power for murderous pursuits while a grieving detective tries to bring them to justice. It was quite creepy in an entertaining way (as opposed to a scary way), but the story had a major loophole in that while the twins were able to control everyone else around them, somehow the detective was immune. Go figure.
I couldn't understand why they didn't just off him in the first place. But aside from that this film was pretty well made. The direction and cinematography were pretty good for a relatively low budget film.
I think you'll enjoy this one, Michael.
I also tried to watch Greenberg, a Ben Stiller helmed dramedy. Usually I watch anything Stiller's in with gusto. In fact he's the only reason I even gave this movie the time of day because I had a bad feeling about it from the time it came in 08, 09?
I wasn't interested to see it, but I found myself bored and couldn't find anything else more interesting to watch. I thought if Ben Stiller is in it how bad can it be? It was bad. If there's anyone who has found his true calling in life, it's Stiller. He's great with comedy. Not so with drama. This movie was soooo slow and sooo boring I didn't even watch it to the end. Now that's almost unheard of for me. I always watch a movie to the end no matter how horrible it starts out. This time I couldn't do it. Not even for Stiller.
I immediately had to read what the critics had to say about it and according to Rotten Tomatoes they generally loved it. This picture was pure torture for me.

I recently saw Season of the Witch too. I thought it was clever, but not great. I like medieval witch movies too, but this one just lacked something for me.
I've been too busy to see any movies this past week, but just wanted to pop in and say welcome, James!
I really want to see The Secret in their Eyes. I hear Juan Jose Campanella is one to watch.

The Secret in Their Eyes was very good. Disturbing subject matter.
Just saw Insidious this week. Some serious jumps in it.
The endind left me a bit cold they could have said
to be continued...
I like how they were able to build tension without all the gore in Insidious, but I agree with you that the ending felt a bit unfinished.
The creepiest thing about the twins in Seconds Apart was how they did everything in tandem. They were like a mirror ... reflecting each other's imagine. Pretty good direction/art direction. Glad you like it. I thought of you while watching and figured this would be right up your street, horror fan that you are. :)

Ballbuster just doesn't have the catalogue that NF has.

The Bond of Silence
Also a "bad seed" type of film called Bloody Birthday. Kids you love to hate.

Hi Ginette, welcome to the group!
Recently I saw The Chameleon about French imposter Frederic Bourdin. Interesting real life story, but the movie was boring. Emilie de Ravin acting abilities (or rather lack thereof) sort of got on my nerves. Not recommendable.

Saw Bond of Silence. Agree that it was pretty good. The lead actress handled the role pretty well, I think.
@Ebone, I liked Charlie St. Cloud too, but mostly for Zac Efron. Boy, that kid is a looker.

Yes he is! But boy he can act.. He can pull the tears out on demand like nobody's business! LOL I was like, please don't cry! I was crying with his a**!
He did the same thing in that silly remake of 17 Again. That was a good movie too.

Thanks! The group looks great!

Thought provoking Indie film about an aging sheriff in a small Canadian town with a checkered past.
The murder of a stranger brings old issues to the surface.
Ginette, you're welcome. Really nice to have you because you're opening up my eyes to a lot of Latin American films I probably wouldn't have heard about otherwise. I love foreign films, but I haven't watched much from your region apart from the more commercialized, made in America stuff. I've added both films you mentioned to my TBW list.
So I finally saw Jumping the Broom and loved it! Lots of beautiful people. Paula Patton is one gorgeous woman and so were all the other ladies too. I just love Loretta Devine and her drama. Matched with the ever crazy and lovable Tasha Smith, she was great to watch as always. I loved the scene where she was grinning at Tasha in the pool. That's so Loretta.
And the men ... oh lord. Two words. Gary Dourdon! I love this guy, but I always forget about him whenever some man-drooling chats come up on this and other threads. That is a grievous sin because he is so fine! I love that little squint thing he does with his eyes.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie, though I do have some minor complaints. The writing was a bit weak. It's a rom-com so its probably not meant to have much substance anyway. Paula Patton played her character a tad too sweet and goody two shoes for my taste, but it wasn't so much that it got on my nerves; and Laz Alonzo's performance was boring, very cardboardish. People like Tasha and Loretta, Mike Epps, with his usual hilarious nonsense, and Angela Bassett with that glare that could make a grown man cry for his Mommy made up for other parts that didn't work for me. I also like the wedding planner who was kinda neurotic and all over the place. LOL

Oh and I don't like too clean neither and preppy. That makes me sick.

Really enjoyed this one. At first I thought it was going to be like Ground Hogs Day or Sliding Doors but it handled the repetition in a great way.

LOL @ E! That is funny.
