Sam, it's done by M. Night Shamylan, the director who did Sixth Sense and A Lady in the Water. I seem to recall Sigourney Weaver and a number of more and lesser known actors whose names I can't bring to mind right now. I agree with Azzah. It was one of Shamylan's better films. The ending came right out of left field, but it worked. Very suspenseful and well shot. I'm starting to understand your taste in film (a bit ... since you're so picky -- like me haha) so I think you will like this.

Azzah | 10 comments It's a thriller movie called
The Village
Have you seen it ?

message 153: by Azzah (new)

Azzah | 10 comments Bryce Dallas Howard
And
Joaquin Phoenix
Bryce played a wonderful role of a blind but smart women,
And Joaquin as a shy and ambitious person who would like to know more about the ( people they don't wanna talk about)

Michael (mikedecshop) Hereafter
As with all Clint Eastwood directed movies well acted and directed. It is very deliberate in pacing (as are many of Eastwood's) but an interesting premise and story.
The tsunami scene is very cool and realistic. Unlike the scenes we have watched ad nauseum with cars out running collapsing buildings and roads.

message 155: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Metz | 40 comments I watched Stranger Than Fiction last night. I think I found it even more humorous than maybe the average person might because we talk about our characters talking back to us but what would we do if they actually did? lol Plus the scene in the hospital doing research? I haven't had an experience like that one because I don't write anything like that - but I have heard of them and even my research interviews get the raised eyebrows. It may not have been Oscar material but I thought it was very entertaining.

Samantha | 867 comments I haven't seen it yet, Azzah.

I had watched Brothers and it was okay. Not the best movie but then again, I didn't really care for any of the leads.

I saw Little Fockers and was very disappointed. Quite boring and the female leads were just props. Meh.

Omg, I've been so busy lately I haven't had a chance to see any new movies! This week has been filled with a lot of cross country travelling and too many nights in grungy hotel rooms. I love sleeping my own bed. I still need to see The Last Three Days and Hereafter.

Lee, you've made want to see Stranger than Fiction. I've had the chance to see it many times but hesitated because I don't really care for Will Ferrell. Actually quite a number of people in my family liked this one when it first came out.

I'm not a fan of his either but I did think this was funny - like I said mostly because I related so much to the topic. It was a cute story and his character wasn't his usual... "type" either. It wasn't Oscar material though - just a fun movie.

I watched an oldie the other day in honor of Elizabeth Taylor's passing. I had never seen it before (or read the book). It was Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?. That was one strange movie. She was very good in it, but I have to say that it made me appreciate my marriage very much. What a twisted set of relationships they portrayed in that story!

message 161: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 867 comments Recently I watched all three of the Millennium movies. It was better than me listening to the audio, especially since I couldn't get into The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

message 162: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) Just watched the Magician It has been remastered and put out in Blue Ray.
Typical Bergman very dark and brooding but just a pleasure to watch.

message 163: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) The Tourist.
Angelina Jolie is great to look at in designer clothes and hairstyles. That's about all that is good about this movie.
Predictable plot, poor characterizations it just falls flat.

I've seen The Warrior's Way which is a cross between Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon & Wild Wild West. The story was not the best, but boy Korean actor Jang Wong Gun was certainly a sight to behold. I normally don't have a thing for Asians (Asian actors), but I must say this man is fine! And the film featured one of the cutest babies I've ever seen. Too bad the talents of the A class cast was wasted on a bad script.

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son , Martin Lawrence has the ability to crack me up with his facial expressions alone and this film was no different, but it was nevertheless somewhat of a dud. Again due to a poorly written storyline and mediocre acting from the supporting cast. Brandon T. Jackson, who played the skirt chasing BFF of Bow Wow in Lottery Ticket, looked great in this, but that wasn't enough. The laughs were too far and few between and the acting too wooden. Disappointed.

message 165: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) The Resident (I thought I already posted on this so if I am redundant please forgive).
This was a pretty good Stalker/Thriller competently acted and directed. It has one of the best uses of flashback that I have ever seen.A feeling a menace is maintained throughout.

Takers
I avoided this one for some time and I really don't know why. a very good action/heist movie.
The robberies had great plans and were well executed. There was action but not over the top. Well except for maybe one - scene kind of unbelievable.

I've seen The Resident. I thought it was okay, but felt like it was too dull a script for such talents as Hillary Swank and Javier Bardem. I enjoyed it while it lasted though. LOL@re Takers, couldn't have said it better myself, Michael. I really enjoy this film, but not because of anything remotely having to do with the movie ... haha! :)

I saw Hereafter. Clint Eastwood must be feeling his age as I didn't think it was the best story or the best use of his skills as a director. That's just me. Having said that I still think it's a fairly well made film. I felt more sympathy for the kid than anyone else though the feelings of loneliness and desolation which permeated Matt Damon's character were very well portrayed by the actor. The great thing about Clint is that having been an actor himself he's pretty good at enhancing characterization in films. Loved the tsunami scene though it was very scary to watch.

message 167: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) @ Davina Jeffrey Dean Morgan not Javier Bardem.
I had go back to IMDB. OMG did I miss Javier Bardem in this movie?

message 168: by Davina, The Modster (new)

Davina D. | 693 comments Mod
Omg, you're right! Can't believe I got them mixed up. In my mind I knew if was JDM, but somehow I wrote Javier Bardem. It must be because they look sooo much alike. They really should play brothers in a film soon.

message 169: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir I just re-watched Strictly Ballroom. it is so campy with bad fashio0n, hair and make-up. And the part of the Magical negro is played by the Magical Abuela. But the music and the dancing is wonderful. And the final paso doble with Fran and Scott gets me every-time.

message 170: by Michael (last edited Apr 16, 2011 11:05AM) (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) I have two rather unremarkable movies. Both are based on true stories.
Fair Game The better of the two about a covert CIA agent and her ex ambassador husband bucking the White House over the existence of weapons of mass destruction.

All Good Things Concerns the disappearance of the wife of a Manhattan real estate mogul's son. A poorly executed murder mystery with a bevy of annoying characters.

message 171: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 867 comments I watched From Paris with Love. I wasn't impressed at all.

Completely agree with you on All Good Things!
It's amazing how much of the movie was an exact reenactment of the Dateline special that covered this story back in 2009. What was the writer/director thinking?

I haven't been doing much movie watching lately. Too busy reading after a long drought of not reading. Did finally see The Social Network, though. Wow, loved the dialogue, but found Jesse Eisenberger's portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg a bit neurotic and annoying. I thought the direction was good though. Signature Fincher. I'm not happy about the remake of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but I'm interested to see how he goes about it.

message 173: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 867 comments I don't think they should do a remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

message 174: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 867 comments I just watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding. LOL! I've never seen it before. It was cute and funny. I needed a comedy today.

Maybe I'll watch Slumdog Millionaire. I'm trying to catch up on a bit but I'm trying to read as well.

~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ (abbaschild7748) I just saw the "Sex and the city 2" film & loved it!

Hehe ... always nice to have you, E, though you seem to watch a movie only once a year! :)

I don't really do chick flicks, but I saw S&C 2 and it was aright. I mainly liked it for its exotic location. I'd love to go to Abu Dhabi.

Saw The Roommate and gosh, what a yawn. Predictable, poorly acted ... the whole works. I don't understand how these films get green-lit.

message 179: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 867 comments I saw Sex and the City 2 as well. I didn't care for it. Now don't get me wrong. I love love love me some sex and the city. I got the whole series box set (just in case I need a fix). I went to see the movie. Got it on DVD. But I was highly disappointed in the 2nd film. Maybe its because I thought the storyline was poor and the characters didn't feel the same. Then they threw Aiden in the mix and it flopped. They should have really took the time to get a better script.

D, U silly! & it's nice 2 be had =D

Thing is I've seen 2 many movies! I love film as much as I love books! =D For instance last night, I saw that crazy movie "Rock Star" with Mark Wahlberg. Again. That movie was hilarious 2 me. But I did like the 80's music. I grew up on some of that stuff. LOL Oh and I looked at Tarzan Lord of the Apes or Greystoke whatever.. I remember watching this film when I was little, and being totally captivated by it. Some of this still ran true where the film was concerned. But other times I was like OMG! I can't believe I thought that was "cool" the 1st time around.

I luuuuuuuuuved the series, and I really liked the 1st movie. The 2nd I liked as well. But mainly for the different locale and the fashion.. My fav scene in the second one was Miranda and Charlotte getting drunk talkin about what they loved & what drove them crazy about being mothers.. That scene rang so true, but it was done in such a hilarious way 2 me.

Samantha | 867 comments Yesterday I went with my best friend to see Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family. I believe that's the title. Anyway, it was okay. Not nearly as funny and entertaining as the other Madea films. Definitely better than the play. Perry is starting to feel like he tries to hard to be funny. The story lines are starting to be repetitive. At this point in his career, I want him to focus on more serious films. I'm not saying he should forget the Madea stuff but he has caught the attention of a wider audience and made a name for himself so he can definitely do more films.

Oh Davina, I know you like Loretta Devine. She was good in this film. I really enjoyed watching her.

LOL, E, I hear you on those '80s flicks.

I enjoyed some episodes of S&C (of the ones that I caught), but I'm not a fan of the show overall. I dunno, I much prefer watching so-called guy flicks where things tend to get blown up. LOL

So with you on Perry, Sam. He's netted himself a pretty wide audience now. He's proven to the studios that his films can and do make money so I hope he'll grab this opportunity to give minority actors (and not just AAs) the chance to play meatier, more substantial roles. I love Lee Daniels for this very reason.

I've seen pretty much everything Loretta is in so I think I've seen Big Happy Family, but I can't remember the plot exactly. Were the Browns in it?

message 184: by Samantha (last edited Apr 24, 2011 06:40PM) (new)

Samantha | 867 comments Mr. Brown was in it. I think it just came out this weekend. I'm not sure. But I don't think Mr. Brown was in the play. Big Happy Family is about a woman (Loretta) who is dying from cancer and she is trying to get her family together to tell them. There is a lot of drama and craziness.

So I watched Mother & Child and it was not what I had hoped it to be. I don't know. It wasn't a bad film but it wasn't good. Just something not right.

Anyway, I watched another film called Kiss The Bride. I was very disappointed in this movie because the plot was so predictable. The movie reminded me of a bootleg version of "The Best Man" with Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs.

I also watched Did you hear about the Morgans? with Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant. Boring!!!! Omg! Hugh Grant is such a boring actor. I already knew what was going to happen 5 minutes into the movie and the comedic timing was off. Also, there was no chemistry between SJP & Hugh Grant. This film just fell flat.

~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ (abbaschild7748) Just saw this movie yesterday called "Bobby Z" it was made in 2007. Why it was made & why I am just now discovering it explains alot! Believe me... The only good things in this film were fine a** Paul Walker & Jason Lewis

message 186: by Samantha (new)

Lol, I agree with you re: Bobby Z, E! LOL Totally pointless movie, but I'll pretty much watch anything Paul Walker is in and it was a definite bonus that Jason Lewis was in it too. Damn, I'm telling ya, it's downright wrong for a man to be that HOT.

Anyway, recently I've seen:

The Company Men with Ben Affleck and Tommy Lee Jones. Good movie.

The Rite - I thought this would be scary like The Exorcist but the night I watched it my husband was out of town, I was alone at home and I had the best rest I've had in long time. The film was kind of boring though. You could almost tell how it was going to unfold from beginning to end.

The Dilemma - Vince Vaugh usually cracks me up, but this one fell kinda flat. Only highlight was a very hot and tempting Channing Tatum

Samantha, I wasn't even aware that Tyler Perry had a new film out. I'll check it out especially is Loretta is in it. I do love her. She's funny without even trying.

Also glad you went back to your sexy avatar. That rosy cheeked one you had up for a while scared the bejesus out of me! Hehehe

message 190: by Samantha (new)

I don't know why. They just looked ... weird to me. Like evil clown lips. Sorry! I don't mean to diss your avatar. LOL Anyway I do like your sexy legs better! ;)

It's not that I didn't like The Dilemma. It was okay, but I feel like I've seen that movie a million times. It didn't bring anything new or fresh to the whole bromance sub genre. And I was too busy noticing how Vince Vaugh has kinda let himself go -- big gut, double chin and all.

oooooooooooooooH Channing?! He is like my husband in an alternate world! Deets.. I want to see that movie with him in it called the " The Eagle" I think. "The Dilemma" I'm gonna have to check it out anyway just for the promise of Channing alone =D

message 197: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 867 comments Absolutely Remarkable. I loved this film..thought I admit at times I felt like it was a horror film.

The director really did an awesome job with this one!

Let me get into the characters. First, I'm not sure how I liked Natalie Portman's acting in this one. Towards the end, I felt that she did a fabulous job. The transformation into her black swan character was great. In the beginning, she was mediocre. Her facial expression never changed.

Can I applaud Mila Kunis? Loved her in this role. She absolutely shined. It was the perfect part for her and I'm glad that I can finally see her outside of the role of Jackie from the 70s show (though she was hilarious in the role). She absolutely stole the movie in my eyes.

Vincent Cassel is great. Barbara Hershey is fab! I wish I would have saw more of her interaction with Nina. That could have been explored me.

The overall theme of "perfection" and "psychological deterioration" was masterfully crafted. The director really picks up steam towards the end of the film. The ending totally surprised me.

message 198: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 867 comments Why did I watch The Rite and was moved at all. Very predictable. Not original at all :(

Anyway, I've seen the Roommate and it was horrible. Such a predictable movie with many cliches. You kind of saw the stuff happening and then it was executed poorly.

I also saw Tourist. Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie shouldn't have signed up to that film. Beautiful background but the acting was not up to par. The plot had holes in it.
