What have you seen lately?

Tell me about it. I'll sleep like a baby tonight, dreaming of him and Idris in my harem. Milk and Honey. Paradise. :)

Also I started Avatar last night. This movie didn't appeal to me when it was in the theatre but this is what happens when you make a bargain with your man. He watches sappy movies with you and you have to watch the stuff he wants. I find myself not enjoying this but I'm going to finish it today b/c I fell asleep on it.
Oh I saw that one recently. With Efron, I mean. He's a cute kid, a bit too young for me to go gaga over, but if the scourge of Hollywood doesn't catch him and he makes good role choices he seems set to be a major star. I liked his eyes. My husband's are the same shade.
My 10 yr old niece and all her pre/teen counterparts are head over heels for him.
I agree the movie was boooring and really very predictable. Kinda poorly acted too, mostly the little boy and Efron's love interest (who I thought was ... not attractive). I also think she's far too skinny on screen which means she's even skinnier in real life because the camera adds a few pounds to ya. Did not like.
LOL about Avatar. Can you watch it in 3D on your TV? If yes, then by not seeing it at the movies you haven't missed out on anything. But do I want a piece of Sam Worthington? You betcha! :)

I finished Avatar this morning. It was okay. I liked it more as it got towards the end. It was too long imo. Sam Worthington is hot! I agree.
Now I'm off to catch a movie at the theatre...I'll let you ladies know what I see :)

Then I saw True Grit. I'm not a western fan but I still wanted to see this. I like and dislike this film in equal measure. Jeff Bridges did a great job but I found it hard to understand him at first. The young female actress annoyed me. I found the dialogue great and I enjoyed Matt Damon and the other fellow. He showed up towards the end. Some parts of the film moved slow for me. Overall, it was an okay film for me.

I liked it a lot better than I thought I would. Loved the structure and man, it really makes Zuckerberg out to be simultaneously brilliant, and ass and actually kinda pitiful.
I was incredibly impressed with Armand Hammer who played the Winkelvoss twins. He is incredibly nice to look at and he plays the characters with a nice understated humor.
What I appreciated about Blue Valentine was how very well executed it was. From the story you saw unfolding on-screen to the behind the camera technicalities (which I won't unleash my inner film geek and go into! :).
The film took a rather mundane, everyday occurrence (the breakup of a relationship) and presented it in a way that was very cautionary and thought-provoking, but not preachy.
The inability to communicate due to differences in social background, education and ambition and that fatalistic sense of being trapped as a result was very well put across to me. Absolutely brilliant.
I too was more able to sympathise with Gosling's character, though Williams' character was clearly very much a victim as well. I think that was more because it was her. Not that I don't like her. I do, but another actress would've probably elicited more emotion from me.
She did a good job overall though. I was able to see and more importantly feel her character's despair, and these days, with all the fame whores out there who can't act for sh!t, if an actor's able to get any kind of reaction from me I'm happy.

Omg, Tina, I so agree about that opening scene! I knew Sorkin was behind The Social Network when I previewed it (still haven't watched it completely) but when I saw the scene I thought 'Sorkin very much in his element'.

So I watched Inception last night. I'll go over and talk about that.

I woke up to Karate Kid with Jaden Smith. Cute kid. Taraji reminds me of my mother. LOL. Not a bad job to the remake. I think Jaden could go far with his acting career. However, I know there was some flack b/c of his attitude in interviews.

I've seen Devil. I didn't really like it. In fact, I couldn't believe M. Knight Shylaman would associate his name with it. The story was a bit thin and since most of the events took place in a confined space the film had a very claustrophobic quality to it. So did Panic Room with Jodie Foster and a young Kristen Stewart, but the difference is that the tension, the suspense and the acting sucked me in. With Devil that didn't happen. I didn't know who the Devil was, but the lack of a good story and delivery made me not care.

I liked Panic Room.
He's behind Airbender? I'm surprised. I didn't know he was into comics. I thought he was a horror/thriller man.
Is Airbender thrilling, scary or suspenseful? I might have to change my mind and see it.
I did like Panic Room, but I don't particularly care for Jodie Foster (her facial expressions are just weird) and Kristen Stewart ... well she has no facial expression at all.

I really loved Taraji in Karate Kid too (and pretty much everything else she does). I loved the scene where she asked Jaden how many times she has to ask him to pick up his jacket. Now there's a good tiger mom!
I think Jaden is going places. I saw A LOT of his dad in him. The way he talked, his mannerisms. He's his daddy's boy alright.
How is he in interviews? Is he a diva already at such a young age?

Most recently, the author Terry MacMillan tweeted that she thought their demeanor was arrogant and that is was a shame that Will and Jada were pimping their kids out. Now, mind you, I didn't see anywhere in her tweets where she mentions she spent any time in their company.
So far all I have is questionable fashion taste.

I just watched Mother and Child. I love not looking at my netflix queue and being surprised when I open the envelope to see what came. So I had no memory of what Mother and Child was about, who was in it, how long ago I put it in my queue. But I sat to watch it. I have to say, my interested in the three storylines shifted throughout. I thought Annette Bening's arc was by far the most interesting. I though the character Naomi Watts played was all over the place. It doesn't help that I have a weird aversion to anything she does. And i wished we had gotten a few more scenes of the Kerry Washington arc. But S. Epatha Merkerson was da bomb! Love her.
Can't wait to see what shows up in my mailbox next!
Tina, I'm with you on Mother & Child, and I don't particularly care for Watts either.
Still havent seen Blindside. Not too much of a Bullock fan.

Michelle, its funny you should say you want to see The King's Speech. I saw it recently and it was good. Good performance all around but those who stood out for me actually did not include Colin Firth (although he did do well). I was most impressed with Geoffory Rush and Helena Bonham Carter who I never really cared for before but I find myself liking her quirkiness.
Sometimes movies people rave about just fly right over my head. There's massive buzz surrounding this film and it has swept most of the major awards to date. While I did like the film and thought everything about it was well done, the story didn't really engage me. I, of course, sympathised with the characters, but I just couldn't see what all the fuss was about. There are many equally well made human interest films that don't get half the attention this film is getting.
Coincidentally I feel the same about Black Swan. Good, yes. Overrated, definitely.
This year's award picks just don't light a fire in my belly like last year's. I mean last year I was practically foaming at the mouth to see Monique & Gabourey Sibide get their awards for Precious.
This year I'm not as excited about any of the top picks although I still have a few of the Oscar nominated films to see -- The Fighter, True Grit, The Kids are Alright.
Anyway to move on I finally saw Love & Other Drugs. It's your usual cliched love story, but it was aright. All the buzz about Gyllenhaal & Hathaway being naked for 3/4 of the film is just a hoax to get people out in droves. We saw Gyllenhaal naked twice (very nice!) and Hathaway once, and its a 2hr movie.

Actually scrap what I said about The King's Speech above. It was a really nice film and all the actors performed well. What can I say, I had one too many tonight. I hope I don't wake up with a hangover! Oh the horror...!!! My other comments still stand though.

Since I'm still trying to catch up to some movies, I watched Sherlock Holmes. I liked it but that might be because of Robert Downey Jr. LOL. I don't necessarily care for Jude Law.
I also watched Unthinkable with Samuel L. Jackson. Very interesting movie.
I also watched our MoM but I'll wait for the discussion to share my views.

Amazing what weight loss and a change in hairline can do to a face. But that is just the cosmetic stuff, his acting was fabulous. Talk about disappearing into a role.
It is based on a true story so of course I had to google the real Dickey Ecklund. In the movie there is a sub-story that HBO is doing a documentary of Dicky, the Christian Bale character. Sure enough, the real HBO documentary of the real Ecklund is on you tube. As source material it couldn't be beat because the interior and exterior sets in the movie were exactly the same as in the documentary.
Good movie with great supporting characters.
So this weekend has been crazy busy for me. Hosted family from overseas, and had to go all out showing them all the sights and delights of Brooklyn and NYC. Nevertheless being the movie nut that I am I did manage to get a few flicks in. I saw:
The Fighter which I thought was quite good. Since I'm not a fan of boxing as a sport, the main focus for me was the delivery of the actors. Great performances all around, especially by my man Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams. You gotta hand it to Christian. Say whatever you want about the guy, but he's dedicated. I've yet to see the role he doesn't give 110% of himself. Leo and Adams were amazing. I didn't recognise Adams as Charlene until I read the biographies of the real Micky and Dicky on Wikipedia. This is not the type of role she's normally associated with, but she delivered. Leo was absolutely phenomenal. She missed out on the Oscar for Frozen River so I hope she gets it this time around although she's competing with Adams. Whichever of the two wins the category they'll be worthy. Mark Wahlberg was great in this as well. He brought a certain quiet, grounded quality to the chaotic, white trash setting, but unfortunately he kinda fell in the shadows of Bale, Leo and Adams.
Like I said I was mostly drawn to the interaction of the characters because I hate boxing. I just cringe to see those guys getting pummelled to death. I can't bear it. I have no qualms about watching other contact sports like football (which I love), but boxing freaks me out.
Also very reluctantly saw Get Him to the Greek. My husband forced me to see it with him. I am not in the slightest fond of Russell Brand and his outrageous slapstick British humour, but this was surprisingly entertaining, and mainly because of ... well, Russell Brand. Gosh, I still don't like the guy and he will only ever be able to play the one character, but he was almost convincing as the drugged out rock star (probably because his own life is good enough reference for the character). You couldn't help but feel sorry for the stupid bastard. LOL
My Soul to Take - a complete waste of time. I can't believe Wes Craven would put his name to this as writer/director. Slow, predictable, low on scares and quite badly acted. Scream 4 had better be good is all I'll say.

Sam I've been trying to watch Sherlock Holmes for the past six months. I just can't wrap my head around Downey Jr. being Holmes. For me he's Iron Man, not Holmes! :)
Great that you've seen the MoM. I'm really curious to hear your thoughts! I haven't seen it yet. I'm trying not to be influenced by high expectations and just go into the movie with a clean slate. So far its not really working. It's hard not to have high expectations for Michael Hanneke.

I also saw The Proposal with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. I love Betty White and she made me laugh. That scene in the woods with her and Sandra Bullock made me holler.
So last night I found myself watching Death at a Funeral with Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. Why????? OMG!!! So disappointed with this film. They have all of the comedic talent in one film and its wasted. Sure, there was funny moments and I could even relate to some of the characters b/c I have family like that but it was pointless. Lawrence and Rock were boxed in these roles. Glover was useless. Why did Danny Glover sign up for this role? Poor Loretta Devine couldn't shine. I was just disappointed.
I don't even remember Loretta being in this movie and that's very unusual because she has such a big screen presence. Overall, I can see what you're saying, but it was more or less alright for me.
I really liked Dear John for Channing Tatum. God sure was smiling when he put together that child! lol

Channing Tatum is gorgeous. I wanted to smack that chick in the film. I would have waited! Yes indeed! LOL. I normally like the movies that are made from the Nicholas Sparks books.

The Machinist- Christian Bale really sunk his teeth into this role. I was very impressed.
Young Victoria- I liked this but it was boring in spots but it could have been my mood when I was watching it. I was having a bad day period.
The Duchess- I really enjoyed this. I'm on the fence about Kiera Knightly. There's something about her....
ETA: 2012- I wasn't impressed at all!
Saw:
Mean Girls - good, cutesy high school flick. I liked the film's attempt to address female cattiness and the fact that it wasn't so sexed up like so many high school comedy/dramas are these days. Lindsay Lohan looked fresh, healthy and at the top of her game. I feel sad for her now when I hear all the mess she's gotten herself into.
Frankie & Alice - I've never been much of a Halle Berry fan because I've never really thought much of her as an actress. I hope I don't offend anyone by saying this, but I think her Oscar win for Monster's Ball was a token win. I thought her performance in this film was by far the best I've ever seen her.
Never Let Me Go - this was a very moving film based on Japanese author Kuzo Izhugiro's novel of the same name. The film stars Kiera Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield. The film is about the 3 growing up in a boarding school where children are specifically groomed for the purpose of donating all their vital organs once they've reached a certain age. Quite a strong performance by Carey Mulligan, although her style of acting is not really to my taste. Funny you should say you're on the fence about her, Sam, but I really dislike Kiera Knightley for some reason. I can't really put my finger on it, whether its her acting or just her. One thing's for sure though and that's the girl needs to eat. She always looks so gaunt and skeletal you can practically count all the bones in her face. The male lead, Andrew Garfield (was also appeared in the facebook film), was also very unappealing so you didn't even have him as eye candy to distract you from the depressing themes of the film. It's a good movie, but if you're not a fan of any of the leads and you're not particularly looking for a film that will make you cry, I'd skip this.
Trick r Treat - fairly good horror comedy with fairly original protagonists. That little kid was creepy weird.
Legion - very few actors have the versatility to adapt to any role. After all not every actor can use The Method to their advantage like Christian Bale ... lol. Playing these types of sacrilegious characters seem to be Paul Bettany's specialty. He certainly has the looks for it I'd say. I didn't particularly enjoy Legion. I thought the story was slim and the acting relatively poor. I did like the scene with the old lady and the little boy though. Those were perhaps the best parts of the whole movie, imo.

Kiera Knightly- At first I actually liked her but as I continuously see her out there, I'm not too sure of her. You're right! She needs a sandwich. What really pisses me off with her is that she has this smirky look about her. Always smirking during her scenes. I don't know if that is how she really is or what, but as of late she annoys me. LOL.
For me, her performance in Monster's Ball was okay, but was it Oscar worthy? That is the question. I think we've seen some of her best work in movies like Things We Lost In The Fire and Frankie and Alice.
What annoys me the most about Kiera as a person is 'her trying to be trademark' pout. With her bones jutting out everywhere and her lips extended out from her face ... I just wanna punch her. lol
It's funny because there's a group I frequent here on GR and the members are always trying to accuse me of not liking "fat", whatever the ¤%#!&% that means. Well, Kiera sure ain't "fat" and nope don't like her much.

Do you know of any more films were he does nude scenes? I'd be glad to know.
