kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 138 comments To Teri and Nicolle, congrats guys! I'm glad I joined the group and I met readers like you guys. Have fun and sweet reads!

@Namida: I agree. Lately, I don't have time watching anime except if my brother ask me to watch with him. Not because I read much but because I'm trying to balance my study and book. Haha. Anime, third. Any favorites to share?

message 302: by Chaundra (new)

Chaundra (bug30) Hi I'm Lydia from Las Vegas, NV, USA. I love all types of books and I'm excited to start the classics.

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Amy, welcome to the group! You are lucky that your school assigned certain books to read not like mine. When I was high school we usually listen to the teacher discuss while us, the students, don't have any idea what she was talking about. Sweet reads!

Hi Vicky, welcome to the group and this is the best place to start!

Hi Casey, welcome to the group and feel free to share your favorites. You just found the best place to discuss classics, I know few of the members here love Catcher in the Rye.

Hi Terri, I'm very happy that you joined the group! I was planning on taking literature related course but my parents did not like it. I think you are one of those lucky people who graduated with such honor! Have fun and sweet reads!

Glad that you are all here

I'm Jessica and I live in England. I've read quite a few classics, although I think Jane Eyre and Maurice are my favorites
I'm new to Goodreads so still a bit confused by it haha!

yeah i know, sometimes i discover it's been months since i've seen any anime, so i go for the short ones, 13 episodes or a short animation, same goes for books, i'm reading a novella here and there amidst everything. Studies can surely make time fly by...as for the favorites, i won't pretend and say Naruto just so to appear all-anime-knowing :), it's the Key works (Clannad especially) and Makoto Shinkai's stuff (5 Centimeters Per Second especially) what about you?

message 308: by N. LaMar (new)

N. LaMar | 2 comments Hello! I'm Nicole and reside in New Jersey, U.S.A. I've read only a few classics (most of which were for school). I'm looking forward to reading something new and suggestions are welcomed.

message 309: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy You are very welcome Nicole, September reads are To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit; is there a particularly genre you are interested in?

message 310: by Karolina (new)

Karolina | 1 comments Hi there - I am Australian, and am completely addicted to this site. I could spend all day on here if my ISP paid for it. I love Sheridan le Fanu and Edgar Allen Poe. "Green Tea" and "Tell-tale Heart" make great reading for those of us intrigued by Gothic Horror.

Welcome to all of our new members....Wow I am so glad that you are all here!! Thank you for joining!!!!

Please note that during the month of September and October the classics that we are reading as a group are To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit It doesn't matter what order you read them in...and please feel free to join in on our discussions as you go!!!

@Darnell...the 1001 books to read before you die...is that a list of books that you have created on your own?? I am interested to know what books have made that list!!!

message 312: by Jen (new)

Jen (cptnlucky) | 1 comments Hello. I'm Jen. I'm a pirate. (I wish)

message 313: by Namida... (new)

Namida... | 41 comments @Darnell: don't worry, u'r not alone, i too have basically no one except maybe two of my friends who read books, and even those rn't interested in goodreads..."real" world is harsh for all of us :)

@Karolina : wow, Karolina the Tell-Tale heart is one of my favvv books, Poe writes simply yet with such emotions evoked out of me, is the green tea similar? I'd want to read that...

@Teri-lynn: teri, 1001 Books You Should Read Before You Die is an official list and a book, it has some of the best literature in the world, and even changes every four years i think...they even have a group here on goodreads, check it out :)
Oh and teri-lynn i wanted to ask u, as a moderator do u object to other people (nonmoderators) commenting on the introduction thread? cuz some groups do that.

message 314: by Robin (new)

Robin | 2 comments Hi All - I'm new to the group and actually a returning reader. I read like mad for most of my life then had a job (radio producer) where I read for work and stopped reading novels. I've returned with a vengeance! My all time favorite classic is "Jane Eyre". I didn't read it until I was an adult and I bet I've read it 5 times. Also loved "Wuthering Heights" and my spiritual classic is "Siddartha".

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Jessica and Theresa, welcome to the group and have fun reading! Feel free to suggestion and talk like there is no tomorrow. Haha. Kidding.

Hello Sherman, welcome to the group! Well, I suggest Dumas works such as The three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm a big fan of Dumas so I kind of bias to any authors. Haha. Try Austens and Bronte sisters' works.

Hi Darnell, welcome to the group and as well as welcome to Goodreads! There is an active group who specialize in 1001 and they read like true readers. You might join them if you want. I also have the 2008 edition and currently I'm having hard time hunting those books. So far, I got below 100 of the books in the list.

Hi Karolina, welcome to the group! I have Tell-Tale Heart on my TBR and I don't know when to read it and I love his Raven. Sweet reads!

Hi Robin, welcome to the group and most people stop reading because of their works but I'm sure you'll get use to your old reading habit again.

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 138 comments @Namida: I'm kind of ancient, I'm an anime hoarder before and I want to emphasize the word before. Because I only watch old animes and don't have any idea about the latest talk in town. Some of my favorites are Card Captor Sakura, Digimon, Shaman King and many more. I forgot some of them. Haha.

message 320: by Fei Fei (new)

Fei Fei (fallensnow) Hello everyone! *waves*

I'm afraid that I'm a little late with my greetings here seeing as I've already commented on many of the other discussion threads. I'm so pleased to have found this (very active & lively) group on goodreads, which in turn I've only discovered a few days ago as well.

I hail from Canada where summers are disappointingly short. Though I've always been a voracious (and perhaps precocious?) reader, I'd never really developed a taste for the YA genre and upon entering my teenage years, unconsciously skipped directly from the "children" genre into the classics. By the time I'd completed high school, I'd acquainted myself with many staples of English literature. I stopped reading (for leisure) rather abruptly in university due to the pressures of my studies and am only now slowly easing my way back into my old habits. I'm excited to be able to read and discuss all the classics I'll be discovering or re-introduced to with you guys. :)

message 321: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Hi everyone!

I'm from Winnipeg, Canada and fairly new to Goodreads, although not to reading. I've been reading voraciously since I was a teenager and although I feel I've read a lot of classics, some may have been attempted before I was quite "ready" to read them, so I would love to re-read some.

I would have to say my favorites are most of Jane Austen's works, Rebecca, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Handmaid's Tale, Jane Eyre.

Haha I just read your post and realized how similar it sounds to mine. And I used voraciously without noticing yours first, I swear :).

Where in Canada are you from?

Hello there! I'm situated in Montreal, atm. We have similar tastes I see. P&P and Rebecca rank as two of my all-time favorites.

message 326: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to all the Newbies!!!! Yes I agree that Summer in Canada isn't all the long, but as I love to snowmobile and have my own sled I can't really wait for the snow to come!! I love being out on the trails with my sled and my camera!!! It is something that my whole family enjoys and it gets us out together with no TVs Phones and nintendos!!!!!

message 327: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Wow, Snowstorm.... Huricane... snow storm... hur..icane... I can't pick. That's why I came to southern Maryland where we can have both and don't have to be prepared for either. We even have earthquakes (but that was more of a Virginia thing).

My favorites so far r the "wuthering heights","gone with the wind" n' "pride & prejudice"!

message 329: by Susan O (new)

Susan O (sozmore) Hi - I'm Susan from North Carolina, US. I am an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction. Last year I started reading classics that I enjoyed when I was in school or had "missed" in other words not required to read in school. Some of those were "Jane Eyre", "Wuthering Heights", "Vanity Fair", "Middlemarch", and "The Three Musketeers" with all of its sequels.

I'm looking forward to having people to discuss future reads with as I don't have many friends who actually read! I think I'll start with the group by rereading "The Hobbit" which I loved as a teenager.

message 330: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Welcome Susan!. you can't re-read the Hobbit too many times. At least ... I HOPE.. you can't. If so, then I've probably used up a few other peoples re-reads.

It's good to see you here.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome to all the new members.

Karolina, I must say my favorite type of classics are the horror/gothic novels. :)

message 332: by Frozenwaffle (new)

Frozenwaffle | 8 comments Hello everyone! My names Mónica, waffle for short, and I'm from Portugal. I just found out about bookreads a couple of days ago, reading "Your move, Dickens" a blog I very much apreciate. I was happy out of my mind that at last a social network focus on something as interesting and valuable! I love books since birth, probably. :) This is the first group I've joined, so forgive me if I do something wrong.

My favorite classics are LOTR, Hobbit and Silmarillion, Chronicles of Narnia (I have the exact same edition as the one in the group pic, funny) and Little Women, wich I am currently re-reading. I've made a few attempts at Crime and Punnishment, but I cant seem to get past the middle, its a heavy read although interesting.

Stephen King is the main course of my diet, lately, but I enjoy reading nearly everything I can set my hand to and I've been meaning to broaden my horizons - so I'd be grateful to join you in your group readings if you'll have me.

Nice to meet you all! :D

message 333: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow, u'r one of those people, ha...i so envy you!! My first encounter with anime was when i was 5 or 6, of arabic dubbed versions of detective conan, digimon, romeo blue skies, homeless girl remy, and weird movies like Rail of the star... They're just the beginning tho, i hardly remember anything of those except when i rewatched them in japanese as an adult...but they changed my life nonetheless,at least i had a memorable childhood :)

message 335: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 3 comments Hello! I'm Jessie from the United States. As far as classics go I'm not new to the genre. I am pretty much listed as an Austen and Bronte fan. I want to broaden my classic horizons! Any suggestions where to start?

message 336: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 3 comments Fallensnow
Yes! I have read and loved North and South! Margaret Hale is one of my favorite characters!

message 337: by Bree (new)

Bree Garcia Hello! I'm Brianna from California. I've had a "Must Read Classics" list for about two years now, and have barely made a dent! I'm mainly into Austen, Bronte, and I just started the Russians (Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky). I'm hope to find more!

message 338: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Brianna and Jessie....I am glad that you have come to join us!!!

I hope that you will join us in our September and October reads....To kill a Mockingbird...and The Hobbit...We discuss all the way through the books so if you get stuck then we are here to help each other out!!!

message 339: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 3 comments Thank you Teri-lynn! I have read both books as required reads back in school and have always meant to reread them!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome, Brianna and Jessie.

I have a fascination with Russian literature (and Russia), Brianna, so I hope to read most of the Russians, as you say.

Jessie, I have not read one book by Austen. (ducking) I plan to change that. On the upside, Jane Eyre is one of my all time faves.

Melissa Jeanette (melissajeanette) Hi, I live in Bellingham, WA (USA) and I've read a handful of classics but I recently decided to commit to keeping at least one classic in my reading diet. I've just finished Cannery Row and I'm currently listening an audiobook of Anna Karenina. I'm very excited to have a group to discuss future books! I've read both on your current selection but it's been years, so I'll enjoy revisiting them. :)

My favorites, by far, have been "Wuthering Heights" and "To Kill a Mockingbird." I have many on my TBR list, so I look forward to enjoying and discussing them with you here in the future!
