message 155: by Daniel (new)

Daniel I am enjoying Gulliver's travels so far. I will comment more once finished. Going to start Dracula soon and hope it's as good as I have heard.

message 156: by [deleted user] (new)

Daniel...Dracula is absolutely amazing, although it is a very dark book and I can only read so much at a time...I sure hope that you enjoy it as I am.
Looking forward to reading your comments on Gulliver's Travels

Gaijinmama | 14 comments Hi, I'M Gaijinmama, from the U.S. but living permanently in Tokyo, Japan. I teach English at a couple of universities here but my degree is in ESL, not literature. I have never been afraid to tackle a classic but, again, that isn't really my background.
Some favorites have been Les Misérables, Frankensteinand Jane Eyre, and I also adore Romantic and Victorian poetry.

When I'm not reading paranormal romances, that is!

message 160: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hey Gaijinmama, I've always wanted to visit Tokyo!
Hope this group urges you to read more classics.

message 161: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy Hello, I'm Jimmy, just joined this group to incentivise my reading as I think I should be reading more classics - & looking forward to it.

message 162: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hello Jimmy, will you be joining us in our group read?

message 163: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy Yes indeed, or at least that is my intention. Dracula isn't something i have picked up before, although I have read other Gothic classics.

message 164: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Great! I hope you enjoy it as much as everyone else.

I have les Miserables in my to-read list....would you be willing to help me out if I need it??

message 166: by Dodilee (new)

Dodilee (leedodz) | 9 comments Hi, you can call me Lee. I'm from the Philippines and I just read Gone with the Wind last month and fell in love with it. My to-read list includes, 1984, Les Misérables, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Wide Sargasso Sea which I read here is the sequel of Jane Eyre. I have read Jane Eyre and I admit it is a good read but I'm not a fan of how it ends. :))

Any other good classic books are welcome. I love novels that take place in the history. I love the feel of the past and how an author narrates it. ^__^

message 167: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Lee, I too have the same books on my to-read list. Wide Sargasso Sea is a prequel, not sequel (It tells the story of the 'mad woman in the attic' before she went mad), it is a gripping read.

message 168: by Tierney (new)

Tierney Green | 2 comments Hey, I'm Tierney, from England, and I have a strange mix of classics I've read- favourites range from Secret Garden to Dracula to Persuasion. Looking forward to reading some more!

message 169: by Anita (new)

Anita Hi my name is Anita. I am actually new to GoodReads. I found it one day just browsing on the internet looking for good books to read. There is so much to do on this website, its so amazing. I am also really interested in reading classics. I would def be a beginner tho because those are not the books i have read in the past. I am actually reading the Harry Potter Series right now. I am looking for a book to start reading afterwards. Has anyone read the Harry Potter series before? Any thoughts?

message 170: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Anita and Tierney and welcome to the group.

Anita I am new to this whole classic reading but these guys on this group are absolutely AMAZING and very helpful. I too am addicted to this site. I am on here more then any other website.
I have not read the Harry Potter books but some day MAYBE I sure do hope to!!!
In September we are reading To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit. We also discuss the books during our reading so if you have any questions or feel confused we are all there to help eachother out!!!

Happy Reading!!

message 171: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Welcome to the group Anita and Tierney!

I have read Harry Potter, I have read many similar books. Look on my favourites on my bookshelf, all of them are amazing books.

message 172: by Anita (new)

Anita Thanks Teri-lynn and Nicolle. Glad to be in the group!

Terri, I think Henry James is one of those authors that needs to get to the point! I felt that way when I read The Turn of the Screw.

message 175: by Gaijinmama (new)

Gaijinmama | 14 comments Well, now I know I'm going to like it here!
I love the Classics AND the Harry Potter series. I fact, I'm willing to be that in 100 years Harry Potter will be considered Classic! By the way, I have a huuuuuge crush on Snape.
I'Ll certainly join you for The Hobbit. Tolkien in probably my all-time favorite writer.

I'm reading The Hunchback of Notre-Dame now and I'm here to tell you, Hugo is another of those authors! I loved Les Miserables and I'm enjoying Notre Dame, but the man does go on. And on. And on and on. Somebody said on another group that Romantic writers had a policy of never using one word when you could use 50.

message 177: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle That policy is so true!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome, Gaijinmama! I admit I don't have patience for that kind of writing where the author just goes on and on and never gets where he's headed.

message 179: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Hi Everyone, I'm Shannon, I live near Seattle. I have a huge collection of classics in paperback and I am reading my way through them. I've read about 25 so far and my favorites are Villette, Wuthering Heights, and Great Expectations. I saw that you all recently finished Dracula. I loved that book, so unnerving!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome, Shannon! Feel free to join the Dracula discussion.

Yea the Harry Potter books are amazing. I am in the middle of book 4 and i have never watched the movies. Also, very intersting about Snape. I have never heard someone say that before, def a first. =)

OK, this thread is officially hijacked!
Snape is a fascinating character, and he has a huge cult following on the Internet, even a group here at Goodreads, but what first got me hooked was Alan Rickman's portrayal of Snape in the films. He had me at "Missssssster Potter!" (his very first line...aaaaahhhh, that voice! Swoon, drool thud!!)

Hi Nicole, i thought it was a sequel. ^_^ But I will still read them anyways. I like books that is a gripping read. :)) more sleepless nights! :))

message 184: by Gaijinmama (last edited Aug 15, 2011 05:22AM) (new)

Gaijinmama | 14 comments I loved Wide Sargasso Sea, too. Jane Eyre has been a favorite of mine for a long time but the Madwoman in the Attic is such a fascinating character.
Don't expect anything like Jane Eyre, though. The style is completely different.

message 185: by Dodilee (new)

Dodilee (leedodz) | 9 comments Really, that caught my interest! Will definitely read them right now! :)) I like crazy characters, it adds more to the drama. :))

I've already downloaded the ebook. Is it only 88 pages?

message 187: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle That sounds about right, it is only a short read!

message 188: by Dodilee (new)

Dodilee (leedodz) | 9 comments ok cool, even better! :) will start reading after work.! :)) Thanks, Nicolle and Gaijinmama. :))

message 189: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle If you need any help with the language (some Creole language and Patois [like French] langage) and your ebook doesn't have notes just let me know and I'll tell you what it means.

message 190: by Debbie (new)
