The books on the book shelf are ones we have read. All other books can be nominated unless we read the author in the past year.

You can judge it yourself but generally if your on the books page you can see if others have shelved it as a classic. See our thread 'what is a classic' below this.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome to all the new members.

As far as Kjs' question, we don't necessarily all agree on what constitutes a classic. I think one hard and fast rule we've agreed was that it needs to be at least fifty years old.

Welcome! We must like the same type of books, since Persuasion and The Painted Veil are two of my favorites. I don't care for Charles Dickens, but I do think that Great Expectations is one of his better books.

message 1486: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Welcome, Nathalie!

I love Jane Austen, too. Have you tried books by the Bronte Sisters? They're great too!

Welcome, Ella. The vast majority of the books nominated are suitable for teenagers. You will get a chance to vote each month and hopefully the winner will be a book you can read! In fact, we are currently reading Jamaica Inn which many of us first read as young teens.

message 1492: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes!

message 1493: by RitaSkeeter (new)

RitaSkeeter Hi Ella,
Welcome to the group! Another option; if there is a particular classic you are wanting to read you could check in with the buddy read thread to see if there is anyone who may want to read it with you.
Jane Eyre is all time favourite book, hands down.

Welcome, Kaia. You can read the books selected each month in any language, if they are available. We have readers who read the books in French and German. Our group tries to expose classic literature to readers who are not familiar with it.

message 1496: by Kirsten (new)
