Tammy (tammy1) | 46 comments Hi and thanks Lady Danielle!

message 652: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Tammy and Myra! I am thrilled that you joined our group, and hope to hear your opinions of the classics you have read or hated. We have very successful monthly reads which everyone generally seems to enjoy. :)

Hi and thank you for the welcome Nicolle ! I'm actually very excited to have found this site and group, this is my second day and I'm starting to get the hang of it. All in all, it's just nice to find a social venue to discuss opinions and tastes and receive some intelligent and civilized feedback. As opposed to some other places on the internet. ;)

message 654: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Yep, I totally agree. It is an amazing website and this is an amazing group if I say so myself.

message 655: by Jean-Francois (new)

Jean-Francois Amiot (jfreading) Thanks Hugh, Rebekah and Nicole and everyone!

Right, I did read some Jules Verne many years ago in original french. Journey to the center of earth was a great book. I also added the lost world to my "to read"
Well, thanks everyone!

message 656: by Parikhit (new)

Parikhit | 10 comments Hello All,
Parikhit here from Bangalore, India.
I have been looking for a group that loved classics and found one! Sheer luck!
Reading and in particular classics has always been the only hobby. I have read a number of classics, mostly popular ones. 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Wuthering Heights', 'A Christmas Carol' would be the few favourites.

This year I shall be exploring the not-so-popular books by Selma Lagerlof, Maurice Maeterlinck and few other authors.

message 657: by Harsha (new)

Harsha (harshaus) Lol, we meet here too Parikhit..
I am not sure I should be the one welcoming you here as I have been quite scarce here...
However, welcome anyways..

Nicolle Hello Parikhit!
I'm glad you found us :)
Feel free to enter our competition which is still open for entries.

message 663: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hey Miranda :) welcome to the group.

message 664: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Oh! Hello there! I guess I should stop reading the discussions now, after almost an hour, and actually join the group, eh? ;) Found this group via Nicolle who said in another group that she was the mod here and was impressed at how well it is doing. Had to come check it out! Glad I did!

SO! I am DaLynn, stay at home, homeschooling mom of 5 kiddos. The big boys are 12, 8, and 7, and my twins - another boy and my only girl - are 16 months. I enjoy reading Christian fic and non fic, mysteries, fantasy, and of course classics! I have a goal to read at least a classic a month this year (within my book-a-week goal) and have had several similar goals in the past.

Looking forward to getting to know you all and reading along! Thanks for having me!

Welcom, Miranda and Dalynn.

message 666: by Raquel (new)

Raquel (ubergeekygirl) Hello. Raquel 32 from Southern California. I enjoy reading classics though I'm fairly new at it. Just finished Wuthering Heights which I didn't care for. I thought the characters were wholly unlikable.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome, Raquel.

I've had Wuthering Heights on my tbr read list for a while. That's what has made me put it off.

message 668: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Dalynn, glad to see you here! We have a monthly read so it should keep you on track for your one a month goal.

Hello to Raquel too, I've heard many mixed reviews of Wuthering Heights though more positive with re-reads of the book.

message 669: by Laura (new)

Laura (lcjensen) Hello. My name is Laura and I live in California, USA. My favorite classics are Little Women and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I really haven't read as many classics as I feel like I should. Hoping this group will bring good discussion to those classics that really need to be discussed! =)

message 670: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) Hi, everyone. I am Pamela and I live in Arkansas, USA. I haven't read very many classics but my fave so far is Little Women. I am currently attempting The Count Of Monte Cristo.

message 682: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (cmardix) | 4 comments Hi all, I'm Catherine, currently living in New York. I have two grown children and three grandchildren, no pets, and one overgrown house plant. I haven't read many classics, (I've got a thing for sexy guys with long pointy teeth...lol) but of the ones I have read, Jane Eyre is my all time favorite!

message 683: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Catherine :) the pointed teeth are strangely attractive... You might like Dracula though he isn't so sexy in my opinion!

message 684: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (cmardix) | 4 comments Hi Nicole, Actually just reread Dracula a few months ago. What is it about bad boys/men that is so strangely appealing?

Welcome, Catherine! Jane Eyre was one of my first classics! Excellent book! I love it! :)

Nicolle Catherine wrote: "Hi Nicole, Actually just reread Dracula a few months ago. What is it about bad boys/men that is so strangely appealing?"

I think we (well I know I personally wouldn't) want a bad boy in real life...so the fictional ones are extra attractive as reading about them is as close as I would ever get to one...it is kind of forbidden and like Pandora's Box, it is willing me to open it!

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) Catherine wrote: "Hi Nicole, Actually just reread Dracula a few months ago. What is it about bad boys/men that is so strangely appealing?"

I know what you mean about "bad boys". My ex-husband was definitely one....hence the "ex". lol.

message 688: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Hi Cathrine, welcome.

I have no idea what the attraction is with bad boys, but if you figure it out, tell me. I have a 6 year old daughter and I would love to know how to difuse that bomb (should I come across it).

You could let her fulfill her interest in the 'bad boy' species through literature rather than life. :)

message 690: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) But in books, they tend to not be all bad, but in real life, they generally are! That's the problem. :(

message 691: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) It's okay, I'm starting on my gun collection.

message 692: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello! I'm Nathan! I'm from Texas and I've always lived here.

I enjoy reading lots of things, from mystery to science-fiction. I am pretty new to the classics but I've enjoyed all of the ones I have read so far. My favorites include Crime and Punishment and the Sign of Four. This group looked like a really good thing for me since I want to start reading a lot more classics.

Hiya Nathan :) I'm sure you will soon have the opinion that this is the best group on Goodreads like I do! (though I may be slightly bias)

Hi Nathan, and welcome! What part of Texas are you from? I lived in the Lake Houston area for many years.

message 696: by Voula (new)

Voula (otl1987) (otl1987) Hey, everyone! Sorry for posting this here, but I didn't find a "general" topic... DOES ANYONE KNOW THIS BOOK?

My mother just told me of a classic she once read, that she liked very much but doesn't remember neither the author nor the title (she thinks it might be a Jane Austen). The book is about how the youngest of five sisters approaches the much older guy they've arranged her sister to marry and she convinces him to marry her instead. And the story is about how she convinces him to change houses and how they have fun and they end up being in love. Rings any bells???

edit: she said she had a great laugh with it, so it's a lighter kind of classic.
