I'm going to try and stop placing so many holds at the library. I would love a year of reading books sitting on my own shelves!

I don't make resolutions for 1/1-. Those have never worked for me. I have occasionally made resolutions on other important dates that have worked. Best wishes to everyone on 1/1- on who've made resolutions for 2011.
Well, I did resolve to read whatever book is in front of me, and not be swayed so much by the constant tbr list building I do. I just started Lord of the Rings and want to finish it, but there are 3 "new" books trying to tempt me.
Good luck, Shelley!
Good luck, Shelley!
I'm totally with you on that resolution, Shelly. I'd had a similar thought, although perhaps not a whole year of solely reading books I already own! I might make myself a little list of 10 books (small target, but at least it's realistic) that I currently own to read next year. I think I'll even make a shelf for them.
I never make resolutions, but this year I am making a few. (1) To read what I own and reduce book purchases. I plan to keep book purchases to what I get with gift cards or trade-in credits. (2) To run the local 5K Shamrock Shuffle (3) To cook at least one completely new dish one time a month (hopefully more, but at least one a month)

We can support each other, Shelley!

I stopped borrowing books from the library this month and am going to try and go the whole year without borrowing. I have 2000+ UNREAD books and am determined to read and get rid of a bunch of them in 2011. I'm still going to use PBS and Bookmooch just not so much like this past year! I can do this!!
My resolution is just to keep on doing what I've been doing: I started checking out only one book from the library at a time, so that way I can still work on my TBR. But I've been reading a lot more of my own books, and it's been working out really well!

Christine, sounds like a plan! I like the idea of trying a new recipe at least once a month, we are definitely in a food rut at our place.

Actually, that sounds like a better idea. A list of 10 is perfect!

That takes an iron will, Jess! I always check out way too many books.
(I like your new picture!)

Jess, you do have great self-control! I'm going to give it a try - starting tomorrow.

My 'stash' has slowly crept over the tops of bookcases, and all the shelves are double stacked to the dismay of my better half. My goal is to purchase only those books that I'm reading for book club that aren't in the library and to 'release' books that have been read to others so that they can enjoy them. Happy New Year!
I do have a general resolution to cull my to-read shelf, but it's so overwhelming, especially because it grows nearly daily, and I'd rather spend time reading than fiddling with it.
Joan my husband always threatens to have a bon fire with my books!! I too am planning on reading them and then releasing them. Where do you release yours??? :)
Susan wrote: "Joan my husband always threatens to have a bon fire with my books!! I too am planning on reading them and then releasing them. Where do you release yours??? :)"Oh dear. Due to trauma of book loss when I was young, I never seem to release mine, even though I belong to bookcrossing, etc. If Goodreads' swap ever goes international I might consider participating.

I had to laugh at the question because I immediately pictured Susan hiding out and waiting for Joan to release those books so that she could grab them. Haha!

Too funny Christine! My 'catch and release' program includes family, friends, local library fundraisers and our 'give a book, get a book' shelf at work.

hahaha Christine, how do you know me so well?? I can't help it!! I'm such an addict!! Wanna see my shelves??
These posts inspired me to rejoin book crossing. I used to release into the wild. I always got so nervous, like I was on some undercover mission.
I've started a bookcase at the office for fellow workers to help themselves - and I love discovering book lovers. You could say I'm a bit of a book pusher!
Shelley, I tried that at work a few years back and it was a big disappointment. I think it's a great idea and hope that your bookshelf works better than mine did. Let us know how things go.
Happy New Year!

The place where I get my hair done does that. The owner of the shop is in my book club and she started it. I've donated some there.

Ummm Christine you are only 55 miles away from me---where do you get your hair done? I want to visit their book shelf--hahaha just kidding!!!
I am rereading the WOT series by Robert Jordan. I bought the latest book in the series and realized it might be a good idea to refresh myself before I start it. I am already almost finished with the first one 'Eye of the world' which was probably the best of them all.

I'm challenging myself to read 125 books this year, which should be easy. :)And I should go more often to the library, but it's hard to find the time sometimes...
Reading resolutions I think are the only sort of resolutions I keep nowadays. My main reading resolution for 2011 is to get through a couple of classics that have been sitting on my shelf for over a year now, mainly Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov xD
So guys, how are you resolutions going? :)I just suck at my reading challenge. We're in march and I barely read 6 books (and many of them were those small books in english)...
Mine was to only read books I own and not check any out from the library.....I own over 2000.....I fell off the bandwagon this week! It was soooo hard, but I'm surprised I lasted this long!! :)
Out of the 14 books I've finished so far this year, only one is a book I already owned. I'm 3/4 of the way through another, but it's been pushed onto the back burner while I deal with a bunch of requests that have come into the library in the mean time. So, not an awesome amount of progress made, but still do-able. I may just have to target the smaller of the books on the list instead of what I intended: diving into Katherine
Susan wrote: "I know but I still feel bad.......but have you seen all the new books coming out this year??? LOL"Oh, don't feel too badly. I'd never last. There are too many good new books. Unless you have unlimited funds and space, it's hard to do for too long with reading at least some of them. As Lee said, I couldn't do it for so long either, although I do own a couple hundred books I haven't read it and I'd like to get to mine too.
I try to find a happy medium of reading books I own already, newly bought and library books. Then I feel like I am making a dent in everything!

I had to modify my reading challenge (I know that is cheating, but it was either modify or quit it). I had set it to 100 books for the year, but changed it to 85. I think that is actually possible for me and still a goal.

That would be hard! Yikes!!

My goal was to avoid purchasing new books. It's almost end of March and I've actually purchased fewer than I've read. I'll have to get back on the wagon. To explain/rationalize the purchases: the first was a birthday present for my niece, which I of course read first, but neatly, with no bent spine; the second was when I traveled to the UK - they have so many interesting books there!!; the third was for a book club after I left it too late to get it through interlibrary loan - but I'm planning on giving it to my mom for her birthday and the fourth and fifth were each $2 hardcovers at our local library's discount rack.
My reading resolution this year is to read more classics. I haven't done so well yet (can't get to the library!), but I've read a couple so far. Incidentally, I can recommend Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca to anyone who enjoys a good, spooky yarn.
I just re-read Jane Eyre and loved it! I still haven't gotten to Rebecca.
I know it's late in the year, but I just decided: I'm going to read at least 2 history books this year. I collect history books and arrange them in chronological order... then I read some urban fantasy or science fiction.
