Goodreads has a challenge for 2011 where you put in the number of books you want to read. Then you make sure you put in the dates that you read the book and it will keep track of your % of completion for your goal. I put in 48 books (1 book a week), but am already on my 6th book. Not counting books I started last year but finish this year, otherwise it will be 7 books I read.
I've never done a reading challenge before and have a question for some of our more experienced challengers...
Do you just go with an overage at the end of the year or do you increase your challenge? I thought that I was really pushing things when I picked my goal but maybe I underestimated myself.
Please advise.

I challenged myself to read 150 books this year. I am at 126, I am not sure if I am going to make it or not. I read a lot, we don't have cable tv so reading is my stress release.
Cheri,I find it so interesting that people always are *shocked* that I don't have cable tv. (Well technically my house does but only my roommates use it, I don't think I've used it even once since moving in) It's really not too hard to live without cable, and it's far more rewarding in so many ways...
We don't have a tv at all. People tend to give you a strange look if the subject of tv and what programs you watch is discussed and you say that you don't own a tv. We used to have one but it came to the end of its useful life and we haven't got around to replacing it and can't say that we miss it either. We all enjoy reading and look forward to visiting the library every week and always have a stack of books on hand to read.

Barbara, I challenged myself to read 100 books this year as I didn't want to pick too high a number as I had lots of university work to do. But over the summer I read a TON and now I'm up to 106 so I've increased my challenge to 125!
I don't watch TV either, mainly because a TV license is about £125 a year! Too expensive for students. If there's a special show or documentary I want to watch you can generally download these online from the TV channel's website. Simon has a TV that we use for watching films (the university library has an excellent collection) or he sometimes plays games on his Playstation. I honestly don't feel like I'm missing out on much not watching TV, and if there's a series I really like I'll tend to buy the boxset. My parents have a TV but they just have the regular free channels on it. To be honest, if you end up paying for cable TV you get so many junk channels! Simon's dad always has the TV on when we visit and there's always some sports game on in the background...it kind of bugs me, like, can't you just turn the TV off and talk to each other!?
I love the reading challenge, at the beginning of the year I put down 75 and about April or May changed it to 150!! I am now at 127 books read!! I love this challenge and hope they will do it next year!!
I set myself the challenge of reading 125 books this year. So far I have read 93 books so I should be able to complete the challenge or if not come pretty close to it.
I love hearing about others who either don't have a TV or if they do, spend very little time watching it. I have it simply because I enjoy watching some of the news programs and occasionally something on PBS, but I find it mostly a great waste of time. I would much rather read a good book or listen to a book on CD, or work on a Sudoku puzzle--I'm afraid I am addicted to Sudoku puzzles.
Are there any other reading challenges out there for 2012? I am looking forwards to challenging myself=]
I definitely think we should do a 2012 one. I plan to have myself read certain types of books, so like:X Amish Fiction
X Christian Fiction
X Historical Fiction
X Nonfiction
X Books about Animals
etc. :)

Do you have a reading goal or challenge for 2011? Perhaps you want to read 50 books, or 100? Or maybe you want to read more books from a certain genre? Start a thread, let us know what your challenge is and keep us updated on how you're doing! We can all encourage each other, and hopefully spot a few new books to add to our wishlists.
