Petra X (petra-x) How do you edit a question that has an incorrect answer. On a question of who had written the book after the tv series of the same name an answer was given that was correct. However, another book fulfilling the criteria was by a different author not included in the answer panel?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

in the bottom left corner of the box in which the question is asked is a little grey link called "flag". If you click that and click "flag as incorrect" you can enter a comment about how the question is wrong. Once you submit the comment, you will be directed to the trivia question page and there will be a link to edit, unflag, or delete the question at the top.

message 3: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Thank you!

Lanica | 13 comments Why are there so may questions about books in my library that are not coming up in the 'trivia abou tmy books' section? Is there a way to connect them?

message 5: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
Any question that was posted without a book link (which is at the question-writer's discretion) will not get tagged by the "trivia in my books".

message 6: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Oh. And I added all 70 of mine before I knew we could do book links. And I don't want to go back and create links unless doing that no longer voids the answers of people who've already answered the questions.

What's the status of that anyway?

I understand the need to edit questions, but I do get annoyed when I have to answer questions more than once, not the duplicates which is another matter, because they've been given some minor edit.

message 7: by Lanica (new)

Lanica | 13 comments Thanks.

message 8: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Nora: I have flagged and written comments on why a question/answer is incorrect several times now, but I do not get the link to edit page. Am I doing something wrong?

"Once you submit the comment, you will be directed to the trivia question page and there will be a link to edit, unflag, or delete the question at the top."

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

sorry, the directions were assuming you were a librarian. Are you? If not, just flag them and leave a comment saying what's wrong, and i'm sure some librarian will see them and correct the mistakes.

message 10: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Yes, I am a librarian. (You can check my profile).

message 11: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurahogan) | 38 comments Petra, once you flag the question as incorrect, click "details" for the question and you'll see a box that says "Fix it, mark it as correct, or delete it" on top of the question. Click on "fix it" and you'll be taken to an edit page.

message 12: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I don't get that box at all.

I was going to correct the spelling of 'Judiasm' in the following question:

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/show/...

I clicked 'flag' and got a fly out box saying 'Mark the question as incorrect, mark this question as a spoiler, flag as offensive'.

If I, as normal, clicked mark as incorrect, I get 'Please explain why you believe this question is inaccurate or a spoiler'. The button says, 'Mark question as incorrect or a spoiler'.

The only other link is, 'Back to the question'.

Is is it possible that I have Librarian status but no privileges to correct questions only books?

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

you have to complete the page that says "mark question as incorrect or spoiler"

just type in why it's incorrect, then click the "Mark as incorrect" button

Once you do that, if you have answered/skipped the question already, you will be directed to the "details" page for that question and will see the "fix it, mark as correct, or delete it" box

If you haven't answered/skipped the question yet, do so, and then when it shows up on the left sidebar, click "details"

message 14: by Leila (last edited Feb 25, 2009 02:17AM) (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) | 41 comments I thought I could edit trivia questions because I have been able before but for some reason, I cannot find the 'edit' link for this one:

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...

The book reference is wrong as it's suppose to be Stephen King's The Stand but the reference is 'Breaking Dawn'. I was wondering why a book I haven't read showed up in 'trivia about my books' :P Could someone fix that?

I also have a question for advice/opinion. I'm easily insecure you see.

Yesterday I submitted a question about a character's death. Although the death was close to the end, I didn't percieve it as a spoiler because I felt it to be natural and a bit minor. However, I am unsure and do you think I should change that question to something else? (since we can't delete).

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

"The Stand" trivia question was fixed.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

As to your other question, whether or not a trivia question is a spoiler is usually a matter of opinion. As a guideline I usually read the back cover/dust jacket flaps, and if the event is specifically listed on there, it's not a spoiler.

The alternative is to ask some people who have read the book what they think.

There is no reason to be insecure, as long as your trivia question is not about Twilight, people will love it :-)

message 17: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Nora, Actually, I learned recently that book covers are written for book buyers and not book readers. I've traditionally read every single word on a book but I'm now trying to not read inside and back covers of a book until I've read the book because sometimes too much of the book's plot is told on the cover, in my opinion.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Well like I said, it's a matter of opinion. One could say that any question outside of "what is the title" or "who is the author" is a spoiler.

Book covers might give away more of the plot than some people like, but most people do read them before reading the book so I would not consider anything on them to be a spoiler.

message 19: by Lynlee4 (new)

Lynlee4 | 14 comments As a new librarian, I thought it would be 'safe' for me to work on inserting book/author links in the questions but I'm running into trouble.

I flag it as incorrect and in the comment box I write 'insert link'. Then I click on 'fix it' and insert the link. When I click 'edit' nothing happens and the page times out giving me an 'oops' error message. I've gone back to review the ones I've flagged and 9 out of 10 times another librarian has had to clean up after me because the flag sticks but the correction does not.

What am I doing wrong?

message 20: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 17, 2008 06:47AM) (new)

:-( I have no clue!

I just went back and added links to one of the questions you had flagged and it worked fine for me.

message 21: by Lynlee4 (new)

Lynlee4 | 14 comments How strange! I just tried from another computer in my house and got the same message. Could it be my ISP???

message 22: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Having just become a Librarian, and reading through the messages to gain some knowledge, I have started on adding links in to the triva questions.

Is there a standard for adding the links? I have seen diffent ways of doing it. Some people add the link in to the question in the appropiate place. Others are asking the question, then inserting hyperlinks below the question.

Personally prefer the first option but guidance would be appreicated

Thanks

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments I don't think there's a standard, but I agree with you that it just looks nicer to add it in the proper place.

message 24: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 14 comments I agree. Especially when they just leave the links directly after the question and don't even move them to their own line. Makes for some very odd-looking questions:

What is the name of the villain in Cornelia Funke's Inkheart?Inkheart

I would love to fix them all as I find them, but there are so many questions without any links at all that really should be fixed first.

message 25: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments I m fixing them as I find them, while adding the links.

message 26: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (seeford) | 573 comments One issue I noticed with the trivia questions is that when a link to the book is added, it pretty much nullifies all the questions asking who the author of the book is.
I moved my mouse, accidently rolled over the name of the book, and the name and authors name popped up right in front of me.
May want to consider *not* adding the link to questions asking who the author is of a particular book...

Holy Cow! You're so right! I feel guilty because I'm sure I've added links....I'll have to start at the beginning again.

Think I'll add the link to the comment box to show after the answer. Would that work just as well?

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes that will link the question to the book, without showing the link to people until they have answered. It'll work great.

message 29: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (seeford) | 573 comments That sounds like a great idea. = )

message 30: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments I am sure I have seen a similar post but cannot find it but I have found a triva question that appears to be linked to the wrong book, but I cannot see the link in the set up. Does this sound familar to any one?

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I think I see what you're talking about. The link says "Ulysses" but links to the book "the Odyssey". Maybe someone accidentally combined the books?

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Fixed it. The problem was that when you search for "Ulysses" to add the book link, the Odyssey is the first book that comes up and must have been clicked by accident.

message 33: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Thanks Nora

I have another question

Triva question that is a spoiler - telling of some ones death, has >100 responses - is it possible for a super user to delete it?

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...

message 34: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments While going through the trivia questions adding links, I am noticing that there some questions where 1 of the answers is scarastic and condescending to other books. Is the a policy / practice on this?

While the author of the question may not like certain books and be fed up with the number of questions added reqarding those books, and is entitled to their opinion, this is a site for all readers and I personally don't think it is appropiate to do this in the trivia section.

message 35: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I was adding A.M. Homes' The Mistress's Daughter to my 'Currently Reading' shelf and there was a trivia question next to it which, if I'd answered it would have really spoiled reading the book. So I flagged the question as a spoiler, wrote why, and expected to get directed to a page I could edit it. But I didn't. The question was marked as 'someone has marked this question as incorrect' (which is incorrect in itself!) but I got no further. I am wondering if I'd clicked 'incorrect' as opposed to 'spoiler' I might have got further (not sure) but having just spent $15 to buy the book, I don't want to see the answer myself! Could someone please help?

It could be I've forgotten how to get further as I gave up Trivia a long time ago, lost in the welter of Twilight and Uncle questions.

message 36: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Petra X

To be able to edit the question you have to answer it first ( for whatever reason). Then you have to go to the details page and from there you will get a link to either "Fix, Delete, Mark as Correct".
Or if you go to the trivia page and select browse link, 1/2 way down the page is a "Keep Triva tidy" link.

If the author of a question is contactable I send them a message asking them to review out of courtsey and give them 3 - 5days to respond/ sort it out. I have done this for this question.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Re: Paula (message 36)

I don't usually fix or delete those questions myself, but it does really bother me as well when non-serious answers to trivia questions blatantly insult other books. There are plenty of other places on this website to talk about how much you don't like certain books, but trivia is for everyone.

Re: Petra

To answer your first question, I don't think that marking as a spoiler and marking as incorrect actually do anything different. You probably did click "mark as spoiler".

Unfortunately, the answers to most trivia questions are spoilers to someone who hasn't read the book. I usually try to avoid answering any kind of trivia for a book until I have read it. While this is inconvenient, if it was not so than anyone would be able to answer the questions, not just people who had read the book which might defeat the purpose of the trivia.

It's good that Paula asked the author to review the question, but in my opinion the only questions that are really spoilers are the ones which give away a plot point in the question itself, spoiling the book for anyone who reads it, not just those who answer it.

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments Paula wrote: "I am noticing that there some questions where 1 of the answers is scarastic and condescending to other books. Is the a policy / practice on t..."

I've wondered the same thing. I came across a question where one of the answers was something like, "Enough with that Jane Austen *itch already!" I blinked a few times, thought about flagging and then saw how many people had responded positively to that one answer and decided to leave it alone. It felt like a fine line between that person's inappropriate answer and the possibility of me being accused of censorship.

message 39: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
I would delete it. :P

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Just because Jane Austen is dead doesn't mean cyber bullying doesn't hurt ;-)

There are other places for people to say the things they want about books, places where they are encouraged to insult books they didn't like. But the trivia isn't that place. Especially since the trivia is frequented by children and sometimes used as a teaching tool.

If the comments were in any way constructive i would think twice, but i don't think insults fall under censorship. I say delete.

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments I've already moved way on from there, so I don't think I'll ever see it again. I can't even remember what book it was really supposed to be about, so I can't go looking for it. Maybe someone else will come across it and take care of it.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I found it easily, by searching for the phrase in question. I've had lots of problems with the author of that question writing other mean and malicious questions, answers, and comments.

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments I never even realized that we could search trivia. I see it now though. Thanks, Nora!

Maybe if that guy's being a problem he should be flagged? Or do the powers-that-be see flags on the trivia? I'm not sure if that's just something for librarians to take care of.

message 44: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
I'm not sure you can flag a person, rather than a question.

OTOH, you could drop Otis or Jessica a note.

message 45: by Paula (last edited Feb 09, 2009 01:47PM) (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Can super users delete trivia questions? If so I would like the following deleted as they are

1) Incorrect
2) The author is not accepting messages to change them
3)Have an inappropiate answer in the answers

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...-

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...

Thanks

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

sometimes, if the question itself is a good one, you can just change the inappropriate answer to a nicer one.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

as of now, the only one left is

http://www.goodreads.com/trivia/detai...

has anyone done any research into this? sometimes people mark the questions as wrong and are mistaken.

all of the rest have had the inappropriate answers deleted and have been marked correct

message 48: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

Can super users delete trivia questions?

Only to the same degree as other librarians.

message 49: by Donna (new)

Donna (deety) | 19 comments Can someone explain to me how to edit the author or authors shown in the "This question is about" section? I found several Nora Roberts related questions that are linked to Mary Shelley instead of (or in addition to) Roberts. I've never edited quiz questions before and don't want to accidentally break them.

message 50: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments I just got your comment on one of those (it was my question)...and I checked the link, it goes to Nora Roberts for me.

I'm not sure why it is going to the other author for you.
