Christina Stind Currently reading Middlemarch by George Eliot - it's a bit hard going in places but I'm still enjoying it. But again, when you read classics, you really have to consider whether you want to read the introduction - why do they always assume you've read the book already before reading the introduction and then fill it with spoilers???

THE POISONWOOD BIBLE and/or The Graveyard Book.

message 1005: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished White Teeth - Zadie Smith and this is my opinion: I would like to say that I have listened to the audio of this today. I am so glad its over with. Sorry to say it wasn't my cup of tea. But as it was on my list to read, its over with. Hated the language that some of them used. I also felt sorry for the characters and their faiths, as I have a best friend who is a Jehovah Witness.

I have no idea whether I feel like readin anymore of hers after listening to this.

Now I am going to read Five on a Treasure Island - Enid Blyton

message 1006: by Vicki (new)

My son and I love Enid Blyton. Great vocabulary for young children and an opportunity to talk about the changes in gender roles and childhoods since they were written. My son and I both miss the freedom of childhood in days gone by.

Stuart (asfus) | 45 comments I am reading Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link

Good for you - it's impossible not to fall in love with that book.

message 1016: by Donna (new)

Donna Hi Lauren, It's really funny but I used to never reread a book and this is the second book I've reread lately because it is a group read on one of the Goodreads groups.

It is true that you get different perspectives at different ages, in this case it's been about 40 years since I last read this book.

message 1017: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) I just started Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh

message 1018: by Julie (new)

Julie Maioriello Horner (jewelsmm) I am still reading The Lace Reader. I've been trying to "get into" the story, but I'm just not with it.

I can imagine that. I'll definitely re-read it someday. Have you read any others by du maurier? I tend to feel Rebecca is the strongest of them.

~~

Reading The Boy in Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne.

message 1020: by Donna (new)

Donna Hi Lauren, I read My Cousin Rachel and The House on the Strand and maybe one or two others but it has been a long time. Rebecca certainly is the most well remembered, especially because of the movies, and I agree probably the strongest of her books but I may revisit a few others one of these days.

I haven't read those two. Well, I attempted The House on the Strand but couldn't get into it. I recommend Frenchman's Creek.

I feel like I have to give The Lovely Bones another chance. I saw the preview, and the story looks really good. So let me know what you think about it.

message 1036: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) Will do! I brought it at a Rummage Sale last year for 50 cents so...??? My friend is also reading it and since many of my friends rarely read I figured this would give us more to talk about than just sports LOL

If you would like to discuss it with other GR members, the Victorians! group are doing so presently. You needn't reread it - just join in :D

It is a bit of a chore, but in a good way. The imagery is fantastic.

message 1041: by [deleted user] (new)

The Way I Found Her by Rose Tremain. My second Tremain, after The Road Home. I don't think it will meet the latter's level but it's good so far.

message 1042: by Beth (new)

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) Currently reading Catching Fire (I'm psyched...I loved The Hunger Games ) as well as a book of short stories entitled Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It. Recently finished The Eyre Affair and surprisingly enjoyed it (gave it 4 stars), as it is not a typical genre for me to read.

message 1043: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) I just started reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

message 1044: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) I hate trying to read books with bad print. My eyes are just too old to handle it anymore, LOL!

message 1045: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Still reading Case Histories - Kate Atkinson. Also decided to listen to American Wife - Curtis Sittenfeld (21hrs 30 mins) as this is a library copy and needs to be sent back before I go away on Friday lunchtime.
