Feeling better today, colds not gone but I can at least breathe now and when I had to clean up dog pooh this morning I wished I couldn't! Mind it was only in one place this time the last time he had the trots he pooped all over the kitchen and the lounge he even pooped on my vacuum cleaner pipe! And he chose to do this on my birthday, nice one eclair!

No, degulasse! Horrible/disgusting in English. Lol I just printed a letter off for Alain, so I assume the water that dripped into my printer as I watered the plant didn't damage it!

All the back to school stuff is in the shops we have to buy the books this year too, mind for a private school I pay just 42 Euros for the year! Hardly the fees of Eton! Big school will cost around 1000 a year with lunches included! I will get a grant for the text books too!

message 3654: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) 42 Euros is not too bad for a year. I have already bought Renee her pens, pencils etc, the rest her mother can buy!

Face it 1000 isn't bad for private school for next year either, there would be no way on this earth I would be able to put her into private education in England! That's one of the reasons we moved to France, to give Sophie a better education. Pens and pencils are cheap the excercise books are cheap too it's the text books that cost the money!

message 3656: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) I totally agree. It is more like £2000-£8000 per term not year here.

you so right! I have two kids each of them have 5 books, roughly and each book is 30 euros. Mines are not allowed a grant because they are only in preschool. The you have to pay 100 euros eah for materials, and i pick them up at lunch time beause that would another 130 euros a months each, its a state school as well!

That would mean Sophie would have been in mainstream school and if she was lucky she might be able to spell and read and add up with a calculator!

I have just put lunch on to cook, rabbit in cider tomorrow its beef bourguignon - Alain will think its his birthday 2 cordon bleu meals in one week!

My daughter is going to Lycee in September. The fees are 550 a term - not bad for intern.

I'd have thought you would have been on hols, being a teacher? what's the second book about Kerry?

Looks like most of us Brits take advantage of the private education system here in France, was that a reason you moved here too?

message 3664: by [deleted user] (new)

I teach adults not children. I get the standard 5 weeks a year holiday and I have to take one of them at Christmas.

My second book is about a year in the life of four English women who live in France. It's fiction but based on people I know here.

Hi Sharon :)

Sounds good need a couple of proof readers we're your people. That's pants only five weeks a year I'm glad I don't have to work, it's a struggle but we cope and the Euro is currently being nice to us in exchange rates!

My daughter has been in state education since she started and has no problem with it. She speaks English French and Spanish and will start to learn Italian next year.

So you didn't enrol her into a private school but you still have to pay? sophie had a problem with her teacher like the 5 others that changed schools at the same time. If you were one of her pets you were fine otherwise she yelled from morning to hometime wouldn't help them if they had a problem and the directrice backed the teacher not the parents. She left us no choice but to switch schools. Sophie is learning English, I know she should be able to speak and understand (she can she pretends she can't) but unfortunately she does have a French Accent when speaking English, albeit very slight! But she can pronounce the and her 'r' and her W.

that's quite cool she speaks english with a french accent, was she born in France or uk.
My kids are the same, i seak to them in spanish at home but but they answer me in English, so came back to spain so they wouldn't have an option.

Hi Eva

Sophie was born in England she was 20 months old when we came to live in France, her first language was English and up until she was six she spoke to me in English for some reason at six she decided that she didn't want to do it any more! Bizarre I know I still speak to her in English and she answers me in French so I know she can translate perfectly!

No, a French Catholic school, who have no problem taking Sophie who is, like me, Protestant. In the times gone by there would have been no chance but times are hard and more people are sending their children to state schools and in order to stay in business the Private schools have opened their doors to anyone who wishes their children to be educated in a Catholic establishment.

I don't stop Sophie participating in the Catechist, or religious education, I believe she should learn about God and Jesus and let her make her own mind up she may convert, but that will be up to her.

message 3673: by [deleted user] (new)

I only have to pay from this year because she will be an intern. Those are the fees.
My daughter was born in the UK spoke English up to going to school here in France and learned French within a term. She has never had to sit a year twice and she is perfect in French and English.

message 3674: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 07, 2012 05:00AM) (new)

Might just take you up on that offer of a proof read. Not that I need a proof read yet as it isn't finished but I would be glad of an opinion on it so far.

No Soph hasn't had to re-take a year yet, but it was by the skin of her teeth with the Blonde in the Public school. She is naturally top in English despite her reticence to speak to me, loves IT French is so so, she's a bit lazy I'm afraid, maths so so before she had no interest in history and geography and science and she has pulled up from the bottom of the class in those subjects to the medium for the class.

As for the proof reading happy to oblige we can do a swap if you like, I have 32 chapters of House of Death completed.

Intern fees not heard of those but then again Sophie is just 10 last year of primary school this year/next we hope and she will be booked in to one of the best private schools in Pontivy in September. Her friend is going to Guemene back into the state school, I can't see the logic with that I moved her out of state school to give her a better chance, less students per teacher not to move her back into the state system to get picked on!

message 3677: by [deleted user] (new)

I have another friend who had children in France and they stopped speaking English too. In fact I think all her children stopped so maybe it is not so rare. I will ask her if she knows.
Although if Sophie is happy in her school and with speaking French then maybe it is not a biggy.

I'm not worried, I keep at her in English like just now she shouted down and asked what Chapitre was in English so I told her in French and then translated the sentence into English. Jo, my daughter is coming up with the same problem though Leon was born in France he spoke English first, now we get a mix if I ask him something he tells me to speak French bless him!

I don't mind, as long as she eventually speaks English, French, Spanish and Italian she will be better off than kids of her age in England who struggle with English!

message 3679: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep - I think you are right to be cool about it. They get enough pressure as it is. Intern is boarding - sorry I had forgotten the English word and had to look it up.

Sarah Weldon (sarahrweldon-author) | 6045 comments Morning

The sun is shining I cleaned the pool of all the grass last night and I now have to trudge into Pontivy to the DIY place to ask about insulation buy a new lawnmower and a new lock for the Wendy house! Exciting stuff insulation, so exciting you can discuss it for days, weeks even!

How was your girly night out?

message 3687: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) Morning

It was absolutely brilliant. We had a lovely Italian mean then went straight in to the show and it was (for a better word) "Wicked".

sounds good, I have spent the morning getting nowhere fast, no lock to be had for the Wendy house in either DIY shops I am going to look on line. Mowers were to expensive and they had no stock of the insulation!

Done it, spoke to a very nice young man who understood what I wanted to know. Ye ha there is intelligent life at EDF I got lucky and found the one and only! All the elctricity needs to be in before we have it inspected and then switched on. So yes if Alain is adamant on getting electricity before the end of August he will have to pay some 240 euros, I'm going to stick my head out and tell him it isn't worth it! The electrician is doing the wiring when he comes back off his hols we've managed this long without electricity we'll manage a bit longer! He's got a generator he can use I can't see his problem!

And I didn't need him to speak English though bless him he wanted to! I find I can't understand them when they speak in English, it takes so long to translate it back to French it hardly seems worthwhile!
