Easter has been bandied about, but that's not far away hopefully before June, the staircase should be here at the end of January and as soon as the tiles are down that can be fitted then I can go upstairs and start painting and tiling the bathroom up there. We have chosen the kitchen and as far as I am aware it's an off the peg job so there should be no delay but we have the one from here to be going on with. It will just look a bit lost in the huge space! The electrician has to come back to wire all the lights up and put the plug covers on and then EDF can come in and test the circuit but there is a 3 week delay for them and until the tiles are laid in the kitchen, lounge and bathroom the electrician can't finish off! Nor the plumber!

By hook or by crook we are going to be in there before summer, wimpy would have built 3 housing estates in the time it's taken to renovate one piddling cottage!

Sarah Weldon (sarahrweldon-author) | 6045 comments I just dropped the bombshell in the car that my car is sick...she is such a tittle tattle she will go straight home and tell her mother, thereby saving me having to! And if it turns out it is the timing belt well it will have to wait until after we move into the house. And in any case Sophie will be eating in the cantine next week!

Me too, I thought that was a good idea pre-warning her mother that I am not replacing my car if that is what's wrong with it and that I don't really need a car, it will save money and that money can be put towards a bigger newer family car later! As I said to Sophie I don't have up to 1000 Euros to spend repairing my car so it will have to go. I think all that needs doing is the fan belt adjusting, I haven't done enough miles for the timing belt to have gone!

Now to write the letter informing school Sophie will be eating in the Cantine as from Monday.

Why do I get a lie in or why is there no school?

There is no school on Wednesdays for the infants and Junior pupils but there is school for the secondary school pupils on a Wednesday mornings. They have long days 8 till 5 for the big kids and for the others 8.45 to 4.15 with an hour and a quarter for lunch! And Sophie has had homework since she was 4!

It's snowing here today! The wet stuff for now so it isn't settling yet!

message 7669: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) Morning,

We have no snow yet but it is bitterly cold. Been a huge crash in Vauxhal. Helicopter crashed into a crane on top of a tower block. The fog is too thick. Huge fire balls erupting in the sky and on the ground.

Wow, is that nearby the hospital? Hope there aren't too many people injured or worse. Going to fetch dog food and tile adhesive but should be around later!

Eva King | 1071 comments on a brighter note i've read this blog on a woman who's going to try not to spend any money on her 2 year old for a whole year.
I would love to try this, since we are pretty skint; the amount of plastic tat they got for xmas and half of it they don't even play with!

message 7676: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) If only it was possible. Kids grow so quickly they will grow out of shoes and clothes unless there are hand me downs!

message 7677: by Mark (new)

Mark Of course it's never good to spoil a child needlessly, but wouldn't it be better not to spend any unnecessary money on personal needs for a year than to save money on your kid?

message 7678: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) This would be very true, only I never have any spare money as it is. All taken up in bills and food :o(

Eva King | 1071 comments Sharon wrote: "If only it was possible. Kids grow so quickly they will grow out of shoes and clothes unless there are hand me downs!"

well in the forum she a few groups where you can access second hand clothing. Here such thing doesn't exist; there's no charity shops, so that option is a bit out of the window. There's the stupid reasoning here where if you use second hand clothing you are telling everyone that you are poor.

message 7680: by Mark (new)

Mark Sharon wrote: "This would be very true, only I never have any spare money as it is. All taken up in bills and food :o("

Ah I see, well then it's pretty much unavoidable I guess. Still there's a difference between spending less and spending nothing at all though. The plan the blogging woman has just seems a bit... harsh or rigorous to me.

To make you feel better, here in Holland the whole second hand/vintage stuff is actually very popular in some scenes. Some of my friends even spend more on a piece of second hand clothing then I would spend on a brand new similar piece.

message 7681: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) Sometimes the second hand is better then the new. I agree Mark, I really don't know how she will be able to do it.

message 7682: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 104 comments No shame in charity shops! My late gran was the queen of jumble sales, she went every fortnight to the church sale and ALWAYS came back with bargains. Some were crap but some were good. Second hand toys, clothes, all sorts and we enjoyed them. When you are 6 you don't care. What is the difference between getting a toy or some clothes from a larger sibling than going to Oxfam to buy a donation.

No I'm not sure how she's going to manage that, here in France we have Emmauss, and I bought my daughters ski wear from there a couple of years ago. I regularly go in and see what bargain material they have for sale. I'm lucky I can make my own clothes, I have a lockstich and overlock machine so the finish is the same to look at as shop bought, but lasts past the first wash! My computer screen was second hand who really gives a damn, most of us buy our cars second or third hand so why the snobbery over clothes and toys.

We have cash converter shops springing up all over France we have in in town where you can pick up all sorts for a fraction of the price!

I'm queen of Noz and I regularly go skip diving in there, all the stuff is new but sold at ridiculous prices - last years stock, bankruptcy stock, flood damaged, whatever. I bought a heavy duty winter coat, brand new for my son in law, rainproof, windproof, Canadian it weighed a ton it cost me 13 Euros! I bought all the Roman blinds for the new house for 6-95 for the 1mtr size and 14.95 for the 2 mtre size!

message 7684: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) I do love a bargain, when I off course have anything spare.

Bad for the families but at least there weren't more people hurt. Happy New Year ShazzyLouLou We have all our tiles for the new house except for the kitchen splashback and our laminate flooring for the bedrooms the tiler is going in this afternoon to tell Alain when he can start. I went to fetch adhesive for the bathroom walltiles and came back with the wrong stuff, I got distracted by a call to go to the reception desk Sophie had wandered off to look for a plug without telling me and then couldn't find me. She has had a severe talking too this lunchtime by both me and Alain, about staying with us in these places, no matter how long we take, or how bored she is.

Tomorrow I have to take it back and change it for the right stuff and I was not amused, okay its only local but that is still a 20 mile trip I didn't need to make. Kids who'd have them!

I booked my car in for a service, oil change filter too and the fuel filter seeing as it has never been changed I don't think. The guy knows me and will let me pay in two parts if its expensive and then in March I have the controle technique (MOT) which lasts for 2 years here! He will probably have to keep it over the weekend and into next week!

Good luck to her I'm on a similar campaign-not to buy my daughter anything from now until I have to buy her new clothes for England! This month my car is taking priority next month my second book gets edited, and March sees the cars' Controle Technique!

You don't always realise they are hoodwinking you into buying them stuff until its to late, or with Sophie that's what happens she talks to me when I am concentrating on something and then sneaks the stuff in the trolley! Chipie!

Its blooming cold here this morning -5, Alain is at the house but he has a paraffin heater, that plus a pair of footless tights under his trousers and on top of that an all in one coverall. I called it his baby grow last time he had it on!

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) Morning, Only been in work 20 mins. Train in front of us broke down. Was stuck outside the station for 45mins then driver says we have to go back to West Ham (2 stops back) and use the underground as he was told to take the train out of service. Typical. Clear blue skies but absolutely freezing here.

Poor you, you must be frozen solid get yourself a nice hot cup of drinking chocolate and thaw out. I've just got back from changing the tile adhesive and putting some money in the bank.
Its warmed up a bit here and the sky isn't as dodgy as it was first thing so the snow fell on someone else this time I think!

I'm trudging through TBL and taking out all the unecessary commas and re-wording odd bits here and there ready to re-launch it as Cally's Secret on an unsuspecting public! And I got so bored yesterday afternoon I opened HOD and worked on it for a while, and if that rat on legs doesn't stop barking I'm going to put it in the barn!
