Susan | 28 comments The book http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51...
shows a truncated image of the cover photo.
If you go to the edit page, http://www.goodreads.com/book/edit/51...
the photo is complete. Can't figure out why it's not showing on the main page.

Adam | 34 comments I've noticed this problem too! I just ran across it with a new book I've been adding. I don't know why this is happening, I suspect it is a sizing issue. For example, when you look at the edit image it is a smaller size. If you click on the image in some situations it shows a smaller photo.

If I scan in a cover and upload it, then it seems to work just fine after that. So that's what I've been doing with books that are like this.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 161 comments There was a topic about this somewhere in this group. I don't remember all the reasoning behind it - something to do with the linkage between GR and the Amazon picture url.

There is a quick fix, which I applied to the above books. It works with about 90% or more of the situations.

1. Save the small picture on your computer before proceeding, just in case this method does not work.
2. In the edit screen, delete the photo.
3. Watch to see if it refreshes. It will have a note as follows: "This book is currently using an image from a 3rd party (Amazon.com)." and a picture of the cover.
4. If there is no note or picture, manually upload the saved small picture from step #1.

Adam | 34 comments Yeah, but I'm not sure this is a linkage issue, because it looks like someone tried to upload the picture. It appears as if the image is uploaded to the GR database of images. With deleting the photo, you are then telling the system to scrape Amazon's database for the photo. I think GR should have it's own separate photo database, as Amazon's has errors and on GR we have the power to fix them.

I just don't know what the issue is with the images on GR's database or why they do this... or if there are certain people that are not uploading the correct types of images, wrong formats or sizes etc...??

Sandra | 31511 comments Adam, wrong sizes and formats just don't load in the first place.

To fix this problem which has been happening for a coule of months, do as Chris said in #4.

Adam | 34 comments I don't know, I've come across images that have "small" and "large" size options, but the "small" shows up and the "large" is the one with an error on the GR page.

I understand the fix, I don't have problems with books images. I simply scan and upload my own. I am just talking about where the root of the problem could be, because, I am also not entirely sure why it happens.

The medium sized book images weren't added to the system until recently, when the images on the individual book pages got bigger. When new books are imported from Amazon or B&N, the three sizes are created correctly. But some of the older imports pre-date the sizing change, therefore they need to be refreshed or manually updated.

No, all three sizes have always been there. However, the middle size -- until the book page redesign -- showed up in very few places. That means that if it was corrupted, it was unlikely to be noticed.

As to why the images sometimes get corrupted, there are a variety of reasons, depending on whether the image was uploaded (and when) or is hosted by Amazon, and some other factors I didn't understand the last time one of the developers tried to explain it to me. ;)

LOL. I'm striking out all over tonight. Thanks for the correction.
