Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments Do you have any resolutions for 2011 or are you someone who never makes them?

What's longest you've ever kept a New Year resolution? Resolution you broke the fastest?

Over the years none of my resolutions have ever lasted more than a couple of months, yet I still continue to make them every year!

message 2: by Shwetika (new)

Shwetika | 72 comments I never make any resolution coz whenever i make some i just can't fulfill them and then i fell guilty of it so from now on i just stop making them

I have never got into the resolution thing but one year, we decided to quit drinking carbonated drinks and it was the new year we started so I consider that a resolution, and it will be 9 years next month!

message 4: by Misha (new)

Misha (misha20) I don't make resolutions any more because I am always unable to keep them ! lol

This year was LE SUCK. I mean, some really good things happened but, in general, one of the worst years to date. I haven't been myself very much.

I don't know whether I'll make any specific resolutions but 2011 is the year I'm going to get my shit together--I'm going to pick myself up and keep on going. Getting a FT job just might be at the top of that list.

Damn, I wish there was a 'like' button because I would like your post in a heartbeat. This year has been truly horrible (well, for me at least). I also need to "get my shit together." Besides that, I also want to read 150 books in 2011. Hope I can make it.

message 7: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Good idea Jamie!

As for myself, I usually don't make resolutions either because I have the hardest time keeping them. But there are some things I'd like to do in 2011.
I'd like to lose the weight I've been saying I'm going to lose for ages. I'm going to try to eat better and exercise more.
I'm going to be more fiscally responsible because I blew so much money last year.
I'm going to try to buy fewer books (which is where a good bit of my money went).
I'm also going to focus on reading some of the longer classics, like War and Peace, rather than set a number of books I want to finish, because, as is the case this year, I get to December and I'm grabbing some of the shortest books I can find just so I can hit my goal instead of reading books I genuinely want to read (and that's kind of making me rethink my plan to do that this year...).
I also want to write more.
And I want to be a nicer, less self-involved person.

message 8: by SarahSaysRead (new)

SarahSaysRead One year in middle school I made a resolution not to use any swear words, and I think that's only one I've ever kept, LOL.

I think this year's was to read at least 100 pages a day, which didn't last more than a few weeks. I exceeded my goal for books read though, so I feel good about that.

Not sure if I'll make one this year... in general, I just want to be happy. If I'm happy, I'm not going to worry so much about resolutions for weight or finances or anything like that.

message 9: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I've never been that great about resolutions, more a short term goal sort of person. A few years ago I made a resolution to keep track of all the books I read in a journal and that went well for a while but I haven't added to it since September even though have have been reading. I really need to get back on track.
This year I am going to try to basically be more positive and not over focus on the little things. My life is generally good I should be happy about that. Also trying to plan a little better for the future, not waiting until the last minute to do things (like grad school applications).

message 10: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Sarah: same here, my only goal in life is to be happy. I am now, and I only hope I'll continue to be so next year. :)

I myself have never made new years resolutions. I guess it can be good to look at what you want in life, but I'd rather just figure things out as I go along without predetermined goals or ideas.

message 11: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I am absolutely awful at sticking to my New Year's resolutions. I'm just hoping to make 2011 a better year than 2010 has been!

message 12: by paulabits (last edited Dec 28, 2010 09:28AM) (new)

paulabits (paulabits) I just want to read more, be more active on this group to improve my English and if I get a job and keep on studying, I don't want to end up all stress. So what I'm trying to say is that I want to be more responsible and organized.

I think by having them written here, I'll feel at least embarrassed if I don't keep them xD

message 13: by Jen (new)

Jen | 111 comments I dont usually make resolutions but in 2011 I hope to get a full time job, read more and maybe find some hobbies that I actually stick with. I find that I often have ideas, but then never follow through.

message 14: by Jenna (new)

Jenna (jenna_marie58) Sometimes I make resolutions, but I'm never too serious about them because I rarely follow through. However, lately I've been realizing that I really need to eat better, exercise, and spend less money. So I guess I'll be working on those next year.

AGREED!!!! Let's go 2011!! Woo Hoo! Bring it on!!!

My generally resolve not to make resolutions but in my drunken, celebratory state am persuaded to make a few. I've got to get on the diet/exercise for sure and I would like to get more reading done and make a plan to travel :)

Happy New Year everyone! :)

message 16: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I'm going to try to read more classics. I feel bad that I haven't read many, especially a lot of Russian lit. I'm starting off by doing readalongs in the blogging world for The Woman In White and War and Peace, hosted by A Literary Odyssey (http://aliteraryodyssey.blogspot.com).

Lori, you should join us if you need a little extra motivation. We're reading War and Peace in January and February.

I'm also going to try to exercise more. I'd like to work up to being able to run 6 or 7 miles at a time, but who knows if I'll have the time (I might need to wake up early in order to accomplish this, and that I know will not happen on a regular basis if at all).

message 17: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Tahleen, I'll have to look into that. I'm not fantastic about reading well with others, but I know that W&P is rather difficult, so some support might be nice. Thanks for sharing!

message 18: by Amy (new)

Amy Harrison | 26 comments My resolutions this year are to keep up my blogs, find a means to travel somewhere, anywhere (I'm stuck in the Midwest), and explore areas outside of my comfort zone.

message 19: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Amy-the Midwest is awesome! :) (Let me know if you need suggestions for how to find something cool to see)

I try to make a couple easy ones and one hard one.

-Floss every day
-Stop texting while driving (I only do at stoplights now, but I'm quitting that)
-improve my karma (be nicer to people, be more patient while driving, that kind of thing)
-Find someplace to volunteer in the Twin Cities
-Make my bed/fold my laundry

message 20: by R (new)

R (feste) One of my resolutions is to review every book I read this year. I find it strangely difficult to organize my thoughts about the books I read and I want to do something about it. Like Paula, now that I've announced it here, hopefully I'll feel more compelled to do it...

message 21: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments I made a few resolutions for myself for this year:

- Go to the gym at least three times a week. I got SO lazy in 2010 and barely worked out once a month.
- Finish reading Anna Karenina. I started it over the summer, put it down to read other books and never picked it back up
- Review every book I read
- Find a job that actually has to do with what I went to college for
- Save money for an amazing trip (I'd love to be able to go to another country for at least two weeks).
- Run a marathon (I think I made this resolution last year and failed)
- Try to stay organized. I'll clean and make sure everything has its own place...but then get lazy and stuff ends up messy again.

Good luck everyone! :)

message 22: by Jen (new)

Jen | 111 comments I want to start a blog... mostly about music with some random stuff thrown in here and there... we'll see if I actually start that this year. I have been saying I will for a while now haha

message 23: by Leanna (new)

Leanna Keist I have a few for myself this year. I don't usually make them, but better late than never!

-Spend some time in the gym and get in shape.
-Drink more water every day...I basically live on coffee and soda while I'm at school and, even though I've always been a small person, I'm definitely starting to gain weight. :(
-Review the books that I read.
-Make and regularly update a blog with my crafts and book reviews.
-Finish the crafts that I start...I have SO many unfinished projects floating around, it's kind of ridiculous.
-Save my money.

I feel like those are fairly manageable, so hopefully I will be able to keep up on at least most of these. :)

yeah, last year (10) was pretty shitty...and this year so far is the same. :(

message 25: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments How is everyone doing with their resolutions/goals for 2011? So far I have pretty much failed with all of mine.

message 26: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten I'm batting about .500. At least I hit the important ones ie no texting while driving and flossing

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

my resolution (quite an extensive list)
-graduate high school
-pass the mcats
-limit my hair-altering obsession
-get married without dying from planning first
-give up pop
-learn how to salsa dance and zumba dance
-pass school
-make my father realize that i am a legal adult that can go out after 10pm and not get kidnapped. (failure)
-plan the perfect wedding (like that's going to happen. not with my family)
-deepen my spirituality
-stop procrastinating
-not break my leg again this year
-be valedictorian
and then some

message 28: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments Should we bring this back?

I only have two for this year:
-Start my Italian lessons again (I used to be semi-fluent but I've forgotten most of it)
-lose 30 pounds (I lost 30 pounds over the summer but have gained quite a bit back)

What about everyone else?

message 29: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I told my mom mine was to quit smoking. She said that sounds like one I could stick to since I have never smoked. :)

The only resolution I have stuck with is actually the only one I remember making. I haven't had any carbonated drinks for 8 years now.

Good Luck everyone on yours.
