Linda2 | 3749 comments The nom thread has been here since Dec 20, Ami and HB.

And I wasn't running it, Madge was. I just made the poll because I know how.

Linda2 | 3749 comments Actually we don't have 6,059 members, we have 98, which is a good-sized group, esp since so many are active. Two groups I joined have already gone under--"Edith Wharton" and "Current British Fiction."

For other fans of Wharton, BTW, she fits nicely into the "Between the Wars" and "Bright Young Things" groups. She wrote much of her best stuff in the '20's and '30's.

I don't know that I would. The narrator of Moby Dick, Ishmael, often just thinks about things as they occur to him and heads off on a tangent usually questioning some conventional wisdom or dogma and leaves it up to the reader to decide what's important. If you want to see an example of what I mean, take a look at Chapter 7. It's short and you can read it quickly: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/2701/2...

Linda2 | 3749 comments I'll see what Madge wants when she wakes up. I was just composing the poll for her.

Why don't you do this by PM? This thread has become clogged with too much non-nomination stuff.

Nah, I'm done Rochelle, thanks.

Linda2 | 3749 comments I've started the campaign below the poll. But now I want 4 books, all at once!

message 158: by MadgeUK (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments My fault Ami - I forgot that we needed a couple of days to do the poll before starting the read on the 1st, so I suggested that we brought it forward. Sorry:(.

I would have nominated earlier, but I've been on vacation and haven't had time since I got back.

message 160: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 | 3749 comments We were pressed for time too, because we're filling in for Chris. Save your books for next month.

message 161: by Historybuff93 (new)

Historybuff93 | 287 comments Sounds good. Thanks, Rochelle!

message 162: by John (new)

John David (nicholasofautrecourt) Unnecessary crap? Oh, that's the reason for the season, Ami!

message 163: by MadgeUK (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments I am beginning to warm to the idea of reading The Count of Monte Cristo. Dumas' The Three Musketeers trilogy were the first books I bought after the war ended, when paper came off rationing, so I have fond memories of his writing. Postwar I was able to spend my 2/6d pocket money on a book each week. I then began to run a library for my less fortunate schoolfriends, complete with tickets, date stamps etc. Happy Days:).

message 164: by MadgeUK (last edited Jan 01, 2011 02:49AM) (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments So, as the poll is neck-and-neck between The Count of Monte Cristo and Ethan Frome, do we want to tackle both or would that just lead to lack of readers? Let me know and I will put suitable chapter headings up.

message 165: by [deleted user] (new)

Didn't we ought to have a 'shoot out' between the two to get a definitive read?

message 166: by MadgeUK (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments OK but don't know how to do that David - perhaps Rochelle does? Another poll?

message 167: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 3574 comments MadgeUK wrote: "OK but don't know how to do that David - perhaps Rochelle does? Another poll?"

Rochell could certainly do that. If she's not too hung over from last night. [vbg]

message 168: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 3574 comments Rochelle, are you going to be setting up a poll for a run-off? Or is the Count winning by its single vote margin? It would be nice to have a decision sooner rather than later!

message 169: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 | 3749 comments No she didn't get drunk on Chablis.

You missed my comment on Jan 1 under the poll. Single vote margin is fine.

message 170: by Linda2 (last edited Jan 03, 2011 10:05PM) (new)

Linda2 | 3749 comments Not only that, I missed your 3 days of comments here because GR didn't send the emails. Grrr....

OK, now we need a mod, and I don't even have a copy of the book. My copy from high school seems to have disappeared.

I thought I had a copy, but I don't/can't find it. It is available on line at Gutenberg (ereader formats also available there) or read books online

I can put up a schedule if you want. People can self moderate. It's a long sucker. ~1200 pages in the unabridged version, so allowing 6 weeks to read/discuss seems reasonable. When do you want it to start? We should give people a couple weeks to get a copy of the book.

message 172: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 | 3749 comments 1200 pages!!?? That can't possibly be the book I read in high school. I must have read an abridged version. I'm crushed. I thought it was an easy read...

Given the choice of that or Canterbury Tales, or the book I'm reading now...

message 173: by [deleted user] (new)

There is some kind of wonderful irony in all this. After all, people were clamoring for a SHORTER book to read and look what they voted for.

message 174: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 | 3749 comments We had all read the abridged version in high school. It was about 200 pages.

message 175: by [deleted user] (new)

LOL. Ignorance is no excuse. Let me know what you and Madge were thinking of for a reading schedule and a start date so I can put up a new topic.

I'm not going to read this one again though. Between Canterbury Tales and my own reading I have plenty to keep me occupied.

message 176: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 | 3749 comments I didn't vote for it!!

Madge and I are not thinking anything. I just volunteered to run the poll. I'm not reading it. I hand the ball back to her.

message 177: by [deleted user] (new)

Heck with it. I'm going to close this topic and start a folder for Count of Monte Cristo.
