For other fans of Wharton, BTW, she fits nicely into the "Between the Wars" and "Bright Young Things" groups. She wrote much of her best stuff in the '20's and '30's.

How would you characterize Melville's phil..." I don't know that I would. The narrator of Moby Dick, Ishmael, often just thinks about things as they occur to him and heads off on a tangent usually questioning some conventional wisdom or dogma and leaves it up to the reader to decide what's important. If you want to see an example of what I mean, take a look at Chapter 7. It's short and you can read it quickly: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/2701/2...

Why don't you do this by PM? This thread has become clogged with too much non-nomination stuff.

Nah, I'm done Rochelle, thanks.

And I wasn't running it, Madge was. I just made the poll because I know how."
I would have nominated earlier, but I've been on vacation and haven't had time since I got back.

Didn't we ought to have a 'shoot out' between the two to get a definitive read?

Rochell could certainly do that. If she's not too hung over from last night. [vbg]

You missed my comment on Jan 1 under the poll. Single vote margin is fine.

OK, now we need a mod, and I don't even have a copy of the book. My copy from high school seems to have disappeared.

I thought I had a copy, but I don't/can't find it. It is available on line at Gutenberg (ereader formats also available there) or read books online
I can put up a schedule if you want. People can self moderate. It's a long sucker. ~1200 pages in the unabridged version, so allowing 6 weeks to read/discuss seems reasonable. When do you want it to start? We should give people a couple weeks to get a copy of the book.

Given the choice of that or Canterbury Tales, or the book I'm reading now...
There is some kind of wonderful irony in all this. After all, people were clamoring for a SHORTER book to read and look what they voted for.
LOL. Ignorance is no excuse. Let me know what you and Madge were thinking of for a reading schedule and a start date so I can put up a new topic.
I'm not going to read this one again though. Between Canterbury Tales and my own reading I have plenty to keep me occupied.

Madge and I are not thinking anything. I just volunteered to run the poll. I'm not reading it. I hand the ball back to her.
Heck with it. I'm going to close this topic and start a folder for Count of Monte Cristo.
