Jan Hurst-Nicholson (janhurst-nicholson) | 257 comments The title of my YA novel (soon to be uploaded as a Kindle) is Mystery at Ocean Drive. I am wondering about the tags as the most emotive ones – kidnapping and drug smuggling - will actually give away the ‘mystery’. The MC learns in Chapter 2 that a girl is being held against her will, but it is only in later chapters that they find out why and that it is to do with drug smuggling. Do you think it matters if I tag it ‘drug smuggling’?
A model radio control helicopter is a central part of the story, but that is a long tag. Do you think most teen boys will know what ‘RC helicopter’ means?
It is a Hardy Boys-type story, but I don’t think I can use Hardy Boys.
My other tags would be: adventure, mystery, kidnapping, surfing, Africa, teenage, young adult, kindle, air race.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Jan,

Specific tags can help, but it's the more general ones that readers see (eg. "young adult" "ya fiction" "mystery"). It's a double-edged sword, though, because the books at the top of the general tags have tons of tags--usually numbering in the hundreds.

I'd try a combination of both to see what works best for you.

PS - There's a tagging thread in this group to help you out.

Jan Hurst-Nicholson (janhurst-nicholson) | 257 comments Thanks Vince,
I am swayed towards not using drug smuggling, but perhaps adding 'action' or similar to encourage boy readers. The book was originally written for reluctant teenage (boy) readers.
I am on the tagging tread - Thanks.

Keryl Raist (kerylraist) | 55 comments I guess the question is: if someone is looking for a book about Drug Smuggling, will they be pleased to find your book?

The tags are search tools. Pick tags that help readers who want the sort of book you have find it.

So: unexpected twist may be more useful than drug smuggling. Or drug retribution may be more in line with what your story is about.
