What books should we have on the Newbery Poll?

I would like there to be no more then ten books so write your top picks here and I will put the top ten most requested on the final poll.

Melissa | 4 comments One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
Ashes by Kathryn Lasky (I haven't seen this on anyone's Newbery list so maybe there's something I'm missing. I think it's great. Good characters, huge important topics as well as more mundane everyday ones. Lots of history and links to many other great works of fiction and poetry.)

David | 26 comments I have a couple questions:
Is nonfiction eligible?
Are books published in Nov. and Dec eligible despite the fact many of us may not have read them?
How many books may we nominate?

message 9: by Martha (new)

Martha One Crazy Summer
Out of My Mind
Keeper
Ninth Ward

message 10: by Tamsyn (new)

Tamsyn | 109 comments David,
Yes, nonfiction books are eligible and have won in the past (most recently, Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village by Laura Amy Schlitz in 2008). And yes, books published in Nov and Dec are eligible. The Higher Power of Lucky was a Nov release I believe, and I didn't know anyone who had read it when it won.

message 18: by Holly (new)

Holly I also really liked :
Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen
The Fences Between Us : The Diary of Piper Davis by Kirby Larson

message 19: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (kristine_a) | 71 comments I know no one else has mentioned it but I actually think the Night Fairy has a pretty good chance. I recently read Sarah Plain & Tall and the Whipping Boy and I can see TNF being a dark horse this year and having another early reader win. I also liked the Woods Runner.

message 20: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Nagel | 91 comments Hard to chose but I liked Out of My Mind, Countdown and Mockingbird, I also really liked Woods Runner.

I just finished The Dreamer and would like to put it at the top of my list. A beautifully written book.

Jess (jessmonster) | 80 comments I think Dark Emperor actually has two votes (me and Kathy).

I listed each book the first time it was mentioned and then put any additional votes in the parentheses.
Sorry I guess it's more confusing that way.

So Water Seeker has two total votes, and The Red Umbrella has 5 total votes. Thank you for double checking though, if anyone else see's any mistakes please let me know and we can fix it. I have been known to make mistakes.

message 34: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessmonster) | 80 comments Thanks for explaining! If I'd bothered to do more than worry about Dark Emperor's votes, I would've figured it out :)

message 37: by Maurynne (new)

Maurynne Maxwell (em_maxwell) | 6 comments The Water Seeker gets my vote. While I personally enjoyed The Dreamer, i think it's not as universally accessible as I think the Newbery needs to be. The Kneebone Boy reminded me of the movie King of Hearts. I love the whole Attolia series, too. I predict Countdown for the win, though.
