Dee,
Did you ever get an answer to this question you posted for feedback?

Another thing I wanted to make sure I understand correctly. If I read a book that fits this month's shelf but also counts toward a task from a prior month's ROAR, I can claim wide points for that book in this month. As an example, last month's shelf was science, and I read The Time Traveler's Wife which fit the "author's first book" category in January. I got points for that task for the January ROAR and was able to claim wide for February. Did that make sense?
Amy, Mini SAT counted as 1 task no matter how many shelves one book hit.
So you read The Time Traveler's Wife in Feb for Jan ROAR - then yes, you can claim points for the Jan ROAR and Feb Wide since you read it in Feb ;)
Did you like it, btw? did you cry? I remembered tears just ran down my cheeks - I loved that book!

Thanks! Yes...I did enjoy The Time Traveler's Wife and shed a few tears as well.
Since I am just now joining this group, can I go back to January and start adding in books read (per read dates on my shelf)? I understand that I will not be given points for the monthly special challenge. Or do I have to start with May and go forward?

Thanks. Now to figure out how to do this. :)

Thanks, Lahni. I did download the blank spreadsheet and have been trying to figure out how to use it. I think I will have questions, but I want to see what I can figure out first. So, stay tuned...:)

err, well, I just realised I haven't updated the spreadsheet in ages (maybe since Feb!) :p
Will try to later...

I don't think, I know you will have questions. I think in January, in this thread, and throughout the different month threads we all asked about a million questions (slight exaggeration) :-P If you have the time, those might answer any questions if not ask. We've asked every question you can think of...a couple of times. Most of us who have been with this challenge from the beginning can help you :) :) :)
btw, once you figure out the spreadsheet its really helpful, i think.
Please forgive me for not reading all messages before asking this question, but I am getting more confused the more I read.
I am still trying to figure out how books I have read since January might fit into ROAR. Thick is self-explanatory and is book page length. And, wide are books that fall on the monthly shelf. Correct?
Mini SAT is one of the 5 challenges and has its own set of 12 shelves which are to be satisfied by 5 books. The other 4 challenges relate to the monthly shelf.
Am I right so far?
Now for my questions - Can I use a book from Mini SAT on one of the other four challenges for the month? Or should I use different books for the other four challenges?
I just reread this post and think I am wrong about the other 4 challenges relating to the monthly shelf since each challenge has it own requirement of book type.
I am still muddled it seems.

The Mini SAT can be confusing. You have 12 shelves that you need to read from and you want to do it with the least amount of books. To qualify, the shelf has to be on the first 2 pages of the book's list of shelves. If you complete it with 5 or less books you get 50 points. If you complete it with 4 or less books, you get an extra 50 (so 100) points. More than 5 books and you earn negative points.
Yes, books used on the Mini SAT can also be used for other challenges and bonus points. Books read can even be used across months. (Books finished in February can earn points for challenges in Feb and Jan)
Books do not have to be on the monthly shelf, you just get bonuses if they do.
Did I clear it up or make it worse?! :-P
Christina wrote: "No worries. You've got "Thick" right. bonus points earned monthly for each book with 500+ pages. As for "Wide" its the groups monthly shelf. (This month American History..and it can be on that shel..."
Christina, I think that helps a lot. Thanks.

OK...it's beginning to clear up for me but I have a few more questions.
Books I read in Jan can only be used for Jan challenges but books I read in March can be used for any challenge from Jan - Mar, correct?
So, can I use a book for mini SAT in one month and for a challenge in another month?
I see from a previous Q&A that I can read up to 5 books per challenge. But, I can satisfy the challenge with just one book, right? If I read 2-5, I just get extra points, right?

question 2 - yes, as long as they are current or past months, not future. so you can use a book on the Mini SAT this month (and a previous month), and also use it for challenges in Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr
question 3 - The Mini SAT is the only exception, but for all the rest of the challenges, you earn per book and you can get credit for up to five, correct. I'm including a link to my monthly recordings, because I really break down how I earn points each month with the books
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...
(Also mid-month challenges you get credit for it right away, just for already reading it or starting it during that 7 day window...and then you can earn more points for it on other challenges once you finish it)
Thanks, Christina - you're definitely on the ball!
I'm not online as much during the weekend so thanks for responding to Bea's Qs :)

No problem. I'm completely addicted to this site and now that school is out I have some time ;) Gotcha covered!! :-P

Kazza, I am the opposite, online more on the weekend than during the week. I expect, at this rate, to maybe be ready to fully participate by next month. Yet, I am close to figuring this ROAR challenge out! Once I get the book part figured out, I think the scoring will make more sense. Will let you know when I get to that part.
Since we get points for less than 5 books to meet the mini-SAT, I am assuming that I can use the same book to meet as many of the shelves as I can in a given monthly mini-SAT, correct?
So, if I use a book for lots of the mini-SAT shelves, does it count as 1 (mini-SAT) and I can use the book 6 more times or do I count every use of the book to satisfy a challenge/mini-SAT?

Bea, since you're starting in the middle of the game, you have the advantage of being able to use 1 book across 5 months' of mini SAT's shelves.
Mini SAT however does count as 1 challenge, so yes, you can use 1 book for month X's mini SAT and 6 other challenges (which can include month Y's mini SAT)

Is there a page count for books read?
Generallly I expect to read at least 100 pages, but I have looked at the list of picturebooks and most of them are shorter.
If I read a shorter book for mini-Sat, would I need to read multiples to make up a particular page count?

So, I am guessing page count is not important here. Yippee!

OK, y'all. I had set this weekend as the last date to figure out this Challenge and points. I have created my own Roar folder and posted January. Would someone have pity on me and take a look at it? I am wanting feedback on what I have done wrong. I did not count points yet for the mini SAT as not all books have been completed.

Can anyone tell me...
I know we only earn the Wide and Thick points for the month we complete the book right? But what about Mini SAT? Is it as long as its 4 or less books we earn the extra??
Wide & Thick points only being earned when book is read (in whichever month you finished reading it), including if book is being read for Mini SAT.
For the Mini SAT bonus / penalty points, they apply when the monthly Mini SAT has been completed (ie. all 12 shelves are ticked off) - it doesn't matter when you've completed them, if you've completed with 4 or less books, then you can claim the bonus points.
Hope that's clear :)

@ Kazza:
Please check message # 666 on the shelf-picker thread.
It grew out of a question raised there, but goes on to raise a question about points for a book's being on the monthly shelf for the ROAR challenge. I didn't think I should post the same thing two different places. But perhaps the answer really does belong here.

Thanks, Susan.
I'll just re-iterate here:
For bonus points to apply, the book must be listed on the shelf picked for the month (exact spelling, etc).

Could we just have a reminder, as we near the end of the year ..?
Once we've totaled all the points we've earned, there are some things we have to deduct to get our grand total, right? Points for the shelves we didn't read in the first task each month, or for needing to read more than 5 to get them all?
I noticed that Coralie has already started to total hers for the year. So it might be good to have the reminder so we all do it the same way.
