Am I the only person who can't seem to get into Jeffrey Eugenides' books?

I've tried reading The Virgin Suicides and Middlesex and I can not get into them! I was so sure (with both of them) that I was going to fall in love with them, but I don't think I made it past 50 pages in either before I stopped trying to force myself to finish them. Those are 2 of the very few books I've ever put down after starting. Am I alone? :(

I really liked The Virgin Suicides the first time but it took several tries to get through Middlesex. I liked the idea of it but some parts were just too overwhelmingly strange the first time.

I agree with Annashu, although I really liked Middlesex and was able to get through it at the first attempt. The Virgin Suicides is beautiful and one of my favourite books...
