Acacia (acaciaa) I live in Concord. I was wondering if you'd lived anywhere near me. Brigid also used to live nearby, in Lexington.

That's what I thought. (That you changed your picture and she didn't recognize you.) I tend to know who people are by the color of their picture. xD

Well, I don't think a college transcript accurately measures a person's intelligence. I mean... a 2 point something is passing.

I also don't think Rick Perry is that stupid, he wouldn't have gotten this far in life if he were an idiot. No, it's probably all just as show, as politics often are. Everything he says is just a way to get some sort of attention/votes, whatever.

Have you read any of the articles? I've been researching it like crazy, which is what I do and basically (this is a really short version of it, in Lav's own words...someone correct me if I'm wrong) the government is trying to get a bill passed that will supposedly help stop copyright infringement such as illegal music downloading and illegal video watching. The problem with this bill is that some of the details say that any website that has "copyright infringing" material on it, can be taken down without warning or trial or anything. So if you have lyrics posted to your blog or a picture you found online being used as a cover for a book, this bill could potentially shut down your website. Wikipedia is in danger because if they link to an infringing website, they could get shut down in an instant.

In my opinion, it's taking away our rights for freedom of speech and it's allowing the government to micromanage things. I don't agree with it at all. I got into a giant argument with my Biology teacher about it today. He frustrates me. :P

Personally, I think the economy would suffer more without piracy. A lot of people find about their favorite authors/artists/bands/etc. through piracy, and are then willing to pay for their material in the future. I was discussing this with my mom this morning, and as she pointed out, people are only going to spend a certain amount of money for things they want. I think people are more likely to illegally download things that are good, but not good enough that they'd be willing to spend money on it––or they don't know if it's going to be good enough, etc. So really, the economy isn't necessarily losing that much.

I love this video where Neil Gaiman talks about the subject. It's just spot-on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Qkyt1...

Just curious, because I totally oppose the idea- why would you want a monarchy?

ETA, three hours later: Republic monarchy? That's completely contradictory...

My problem is not so much with democracy as with capitalism, because I feel that that's what a lot of the problems in society are products of, and they'll remain in place as long as there is a class system. I'm quite conflicted over the issue of there still being a democracy in place because voting system=government=state, which I don't think should be in place in an anarchist society. However, part of me is still like, maybe doing away with a democracy is political oppression, in a way? And I disagree with that, and then I'm like, maybe a socialist government wouldn't be such a bad idea if we still had a structural Parliament, and then, but is there some way that we could successfully transition to a radical/counter-materialistic/anticapitalist/whatever society?
Blaaargh, I don't really know. I suppose at the moment I don't really identify with, like, a specific political ideology, and I'm more concerned about changing the way things are than the exact ways by which they are done.
