tesni (akhmatova) | 5031 comments I HAVE A TOPIC.

So I heard recently that the British Board of Film Classification has refused to give an age classification to the second Human Centipede film because it's so obscene and such, and how it's so disturbing it could actually cause harm (O.o) or something along those lines.
Although this doesn't mean it's properly *banned*, it can't be shown in cinemas or released on DVD, there are huge restrictions on who can see it and where it can be shown, and I believe you would get fined/prosecuted for owning it on DVD.

I get the impression that a lot of us here are against banning/censorship in books, but what about films? Do you have the same feelings on that matter as you do with books? Should you be able to choose what you watch, and be responsible for the consequences and such? Or should they be released, but certain scenes cut out, etc.?

message 1065: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) Well, I'm not against book banning (they need to have a dang good reason//I think things can be banned from elementary/middle schools), so I'm not against movie banning.

But I mean, I think it should be banned from minors. If you're an adult, do whatever the heck you want. But with theatres, kids sneak into upper movies all the time, and if their parents own the DVD, they could still watch it. I don't know; I'm at ends with something like that.

I mean, I don't think they should even be making stuff that's really graphic anyway, sooo... >> Maybe release it in an adult-only movie theatre (we have one where I live; it's not like...porn movies, it's just that only adults are allowed inside for whatever reason), and then make the DVD more censored.

Slightly unrelated to that, man, the first Human Centipede let me down so much. Maybe it's just because I've seen a lot of movies (and a lot of which being very very inappropriate (COUGHMIIKECOUGH)) but really, the outrage over that was nothing. It was...pretty tame I thought. So I can't imagine the sequel being much worse just because it added a bunch more people to the chain.

ON TO MOVIE CENSORSHIP! No way. That's silly. At least when it gets to the point of taking out scenes or making it illegal to own. Being very inappropriate and being only shown in select theaters because of it...I can at least understand. Read: NC-17 movies.

message 1067: by Baxter, butts butts butts (new)

Baxter (julietrocksmysocks) | 2455 comments Mod
Speaking of movie censorship, movie ratings...they get me all riled up. America has, to put it simply, the worst rating system ever. There are absolutely NO strict guidelines for what makes a movie what rating, and it is judged by...middle aged people. Nothing special about them. Though some of them don't have children, which makes me raise an eyebrow.

No, what gets to me is sex. It is a known fact that a movie can have thousands of people killed and get a PG-13 if it doesn't have blood. Likewise, there can be swearing, extreme and grotesque violence and terrible examples of degredation and get an R. But OH WHOOPS! A VAGINA WAS SHOWN! GET THIS SUCKER AN NC-17! WE CANNOT HAVE THAT IN THEATERS! I DON'T WANT MY CHILDREN EXPOSED TO SUCH FILTH! I MEAN, A VAGINA! REALLY NOW.

message 1068: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) Well, as a sixteen-year-old, I appreciate that. I can ignore blood/violence (I mean, I don't watch rated R movies), because it's fake. But for there to be a sex scene like that in a movie, somebody ACTUALLY had sex, while somebody else was filming it. On the side of violence, nobody was actually brutally butchered/whatever it is.

And I just don't like swearing. I won't see a movie if there's too much language.

What does NC-17 stand for?

Over here the film ratings are U, PG, 12A (which means that children under 12 can see it in the cinema if they're accompanied by an adult, but in some ways, isn't that just what PG is? O.o Most 12A films these days are just released as 12s, though), 15 and 18. I believe there's somewhere where you can see what it takes for a film to be given a certain rating.

message 1073: by Baxter, butts butts butts (new)

Baxter (julietrocksmysocks) | 2455 comments Mod
NC-17 is basically what the X rating was renamed to. People under 17 are strictly prohibited from watching them at a cinema-- no exceptions. So you can't air commercials for it and most theaters won't show it and it generally just sucks for the movie.

I always skip the scenes anyway. They're so awkward! Like I'm peaking into someone's window and watching them have sex together! I just dont' need that crap in my head. 20 years ago PG-13 movies nowadays would be rated R, no question about it. The way the rating system is slipping is ridiculous.

message 1087: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I think the rating system is a horrible thing to go by when deciding what movies children should be allowed to watch. For example: The King's Speech is rated R and the only reason is for all the cussing. But then there are some PG-13 movies that scare the crud out of me that I would never let my children watch.

message 1088: by Jayda (new)

Jayda | 2761 comments Oh yeah, you definitely need to be on top of why things are rated the way they are. But I'd never let my kids watch a rated R movie, unless it was on TV and they were old enough to handle its content. I don't watch rated R movies though (unless it's on TV where they have to edit out all of the crap) and my kids won't be watching most PG-13 movies until they're 12 or so. I mean, it depends on the kid, and their maturity and what they can handle. But it's also up to the parents to impliment rules and guidelines.

message 1089: by Acacia (new)

Acacia (acaciaa) My parents are very lenient when it comes to censorship, especially my dad. If it looks like a good movie, we'll go see it, no matter what the rating is. We watched Pulp Fiction together, for example. And he let me and Ilana go to Black Swan (rated R) without him even though I wasn't 17.

So yeah. I'm against censorship, although less so for movies than for books. The one thing I'm concerned about with movies is that the action sequences and things might scare little kids, so to a certain age it's up to the parents to decide if their kid can handle it.

I'mma disagree with that, because that's what I do! Sure, there are tooons of movie where sex is completely pointless (and usually has me groaning when it happens). Lots and lots and lots of blockbuster movies are like that; where the relationships are forced enough as it is, and sex just makes it feel... embarrassing.
But on the flip side, there are plenty of movies where it aids it. Don't Look Now is pretty famous for its sex scene, which brilliantly let the viewer know that even though the couple fights and argues, there is still love between them. If it didn't exist, people would have a VERY different reaction to the events in the rest of the film.

message 1093: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) Ditto.

Well, I understand the King's Speech; the one scene had about a billion F-words all strung together, and I wouldn't want my impressionable children watching that, hearing the audience laugh (because it WAS funny), and thinking it's okay to go around using the word themselves. And the good thing about ratings is that they tell you what the rating is FOR, so you can decide for youself if you want to see the movie or not. Ratings are a guideline to help you choose what to see.

message 1094: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
Yeah, I'm glad they rate movies, just so you'll know if there could be something questionable in them. I mean, if they didn't, you could find yourself in some pretty interesting movies you don't want to see.

I use IMDB to look up horror movie stuff.

And then I look up the plot....

Which is why I am terrified of Jigsaw.

Anyways, my mother is so protective, I'm now allowed to watch PG-13 movies that she approves on my own, but she still covers my eyes while watching Indiana Jones....

The only "adult" show I can watch on my own is Lost, and my mom was upset when Kate pulled off her pants to go swimming. Nothing was shown, but apparently it's inappropriate. I wasn't thinking "impure" thoughts, and she wasn't doing anything bad; you can't go swimming in jeans.

So, women aren't allowed to swim in un-revealing underwear, but yet I can watch Indiana Jones and Marion get it on?

....
