Psshh...I was just kidding. I actually believe we landed on the moon; I just think it's funny if everyone finds out that we actually didn't. Like if the moon landing video wins an Oscar. Lol. Best performance...

Picture Perfect (picturesperfect) | 312 comments Okay, going on to a really random topic that I'll probably get yelled at for writing this for this post. So this summer I'm going to teach my mom English better like reading, writing, and grammar. Blahdiblahdiblah. So for the reading part, I'm going to have her read out loud to me from a fiction book. But you see, I don't want any book with too awkward scenes...*crickets*

Anyway, I also don't want too kid books because I want my mom to read in my level (hard to meet however...ha I'm so cocky). Any suggestions for a book like that? When I mean by too awkward, I mean like sex scenes, passionate kissing scenes, swearing anything in the book, talking about sex scenes, or just really really bad characters who don't like follow their parents.

Yeah, I know. I just don't want to have to guess how my mom is going to react to the scenes coming up. See, I don't want her to have a bad image of fiction because then she'll try to make me stop reading....and I would kill myself if that happened. My mom can be ignorantly strict sometimes, so I just want to prevent anything. She just likes to shelter me which is not going to work of course. The book should not be too low of a level like some kid books out there.

Oh gosh, what am I doing asking you guys? Hmmm, anyway, the book should be interesting, not to kid-like, and not too awkward. I never thought I'd need to do this, but...*headdesk*

Oh wells, my mom said she'll pay me...ha.

Jordan, The Picture Magician (aka Probie) (thepicturemagicianakaprobie) | 2218 comments Two words. Harry. Potter.

message 458: by Acacia (new)

Acacia (acaciaa) You said you're teaching your mom English? What is her native language?

Also, about what level of English does she have a grasp on? For example, if you had to assign a reading grade level, what would that be?

message 459: by Picture (new)

Picture Perfect (picturesperfect) | 312 comments Ahh, at least someone is answering...ha. Okay, I was actually think about Harry Potter, Jordan.

Um, Acacia, okay, my mom actually speaks English. It's kind of like when Spanish-speaking people take Spanish in high school to improve because they can't write or something. My mom actually knows two Indian languages. She can speak English. But she has poor grammar, spelling, and reading skills.

I think her reading level on a scale of 1-10. 10 being like Shakespeare and 1 being like picture books. I think she would fit around 5. She can read. But I've seen third graders read better than her...

She used to be pretty decent at English, but she didn't practice writing and reading anymore. And she needs to build up her vocabulary skills because some words that I think are simple are words she does not understand.

Irène Némirovsky is totes the way to go.
Le Bal is a good one to start with, because it's quite short; only a hundred pages or so, and is actually two seperate novellas. Jezebel might also be okay, depending on what you count as an awkward scene and how awkward it would have to be to be awkward.

message 461: by Acacia (new)

Acacia (acaciaa) Ohh, I gotcha. I assumed by 'learning English better' you meant she was learning it as a second language. Sorry about that.

Harry potter would be a good choice. I was trying to think of books we read for school in middle school, and Because of Winn Dixie came to mind. Tuck Everlasting is a good one too. I think they're around fifth grade reading level, since that was around when we read them, but they can definitely be enjoyed by people older than that. They're both very engaging stories that are as clean as you requested.

Because of Winn Dixie is about a girl who finds a dog and... um... gosh, I don't remember much about it at all. But it's really good, and if I remember correctly it's really cute too.

Tuck Everlasting is about a family that is immortal. They don't age and are impervious to illness and injury. A little girl discovers their secret and they have to kidnap her to keep her from telling everybody else. It's not what it sounds like, honestly. I really liked it and all the characters are really sweet.

I actually read both of them. And I thought about Winn Dixie. At first, I thought it would be too easy, but now I'm not so sure. Hmm...maybe I'll check it out along with Tuck Everlasting. Both are wonderful books even if Winn Dixie is a bit to kid-like. I actually own the Winn Dixie one. Ha. I'm not even typing the full name of the book. Who cares about the "because of?" Ha...yeah. Thanks a lot.

Acacia (acaciaa) Oh, it's good that you've read Winn Dixie, because literally the only thing I remember about that book is something called melancholy drops. XD

Huh? Seriously, I haven't read it recently. I can't stand that book anymore because the font is so huge. I don't know why that bothers me. I actually dislike dog books unless it's a picture book (Pssh...I don't read picture books...rarely...occasionally...come on, my eyes hurt that day). Okay, a little interruption from my stupidly conscious mind, but let's get back down to business. (TO DEFEAT THE HUNS)

I should stop writing no----(THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON)

A little Mulan moment there.

Thanks.

I liked it when I was little, but I would never be caught dead or alive reading the book. I think I only liked it when I was little because my sister liked the book. When I was little, my older sister was my unconscious role model (I unconsciously wanted to be like her).

I don't like Kate DiCamillo at all. Bleh. I couldn't even finish Because of Winn Dixie. I also read The Tale of Desperaux and didn't like it either ... only bright side was it had adorable illustrations. XD

I don't think it was in a weird font. All I remember was that it had ridiculously large margins and spaces between lines. I hate when books do that, it's such a waste of paper! *fumes* Like, seriously, it was a book that could've been 100 pages stretched out to 300 pages. x_x

message 483: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (flwurautumn) | 4987 comments That makes me think of this book The Invention of Hugo Cabret which is gigantic, but it's mostly pictures.

Omigod, that book is stunning though. Like, the illustrations are amazingly detailed. It blows my mind to think how long it must have taken him to make that book... That's different, because there's actually something beautiful on each page. Whereas, there are so many books where there's like, 100 words on a page and there's no reason for it...

message 485: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (flwurautumn) | 4987 comments Oh, yeah, I loved the pictures. I didn't mean it in a bad way. But I read that book in 5th grade because I saw it and I was like "WHOA SO MANY PAGES. I'LL LOOK SO SMARTZ" and then...it was all pictures. Haha.

Haha! I only read it like ... two years ago, I think. But yeah, the first time I saw it I was like "Gosh, that's a huge book" and then discovered it was a giant picture book. XD If a picture is worth 1000 words that book is worth like ... 984,972,384,792,374,893,279,847 words. :D

MAN. I have a greattt debate topic.

JUDGMENT DAY.

Wahoooo. So, supposedly on May 21st all the Christians shall go into heaven(admittedly, not quite sure how that's going to go down. Will they just sort of float up there? Or will there be hot air balloons? Maybe jetpacks? Oh, I know. Stairways. They will all be taking literal stairways.)

So, then after that. There's like tons of literal hell on earth(not joking here) until the earth burns up in October... Sounds like a party, right?

Sooo, yeah. What's your opinion on all this Judgement day fun stuff?
