Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) This event continues from last year, but with a few major changes.

What is it?
This is a week-long event during which you read as much as you can. If you choose to take part, it can help you get that read shelf count spiking up as you try to reach that reading goal you set for yourself - That's why it's a catch-up readathon. Of course, sleep as much as you want, and do all your daily chores, but just remember to reduce the distractions. That's what this is about.

A sign-up sheet for the event will open up one week prior to the event, so be sure to put in your name there if you plan to take part. There will be a discussion thread set up where participants can have a chat on their progress and books read. Everyone can drop by the thread to cheer on other participants. Participation in the discussion thread is not mandatory, but welcome. At the end of the event, a Finish-line thread will be set up for you to share how much reading you got done.

24-hour reading spree
For those of you who like the 24-hour readathons better, this is your day. Spend the whole day and night reading and get that pil out of your way. You can set up your schedule any way you wish. You can use the same sign-up, discussion, and finish-line threads mentioned above. Even those of you doing the week-long readathon can use this 24-hour reading spree.

What books do I read?
That's entirely up to you. Last year, I had a few asking if participants ought to read the same books. The answer is No. Also, you do not have to plan your reading list in advance, but you can do so if you wish.

The type of books allowed include the books allowed for the Cover to Cover challenge, to make it easy for participants. After all, the purpose of the readathon is to help you reach that goal you set for yourself. The categories include print books, ebooks, audiobooks, manga, graphic novels, short stories or anthologies (for counting books that are short stories, check this thread). No children books allowed (For what counts as a children's book, check this thread).

Logistics
- The event will be held four times a year - in February, May, August, and November.
- The polls for each event will open up a month and a half in advance. The poll invitations will be sent out to the group members.
- Once the week for the event has been decided, a second poll will be set up for you to choose the date for the 24-hour reading spree.
- A broadcast will be sent out once the date has been decided and also the day before the event starts.

Me too! :)

Ivy (luvbug) Good way to finish off that book that you couldn't seem to find the time to read...looking forward to these read a thons...

message 5: by Susan (NY) (new)

Susan (NY) sounds interesting. I'm going to try it out.

message 6: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) I like the idea of a week-long one. I have so much trouble cramming it into 24 hours.

message 7: by Tiff (new)

Tiff (utbooklady) | 65 comments This is such an awesome idea, I am excited to participate in all 4! I tried so hard to participate in the 24 hour read a thons, but I always got distracted with something else (or fell asleep) LOL :)

message 8: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) This is going to be a lot of fun! :D

message 9: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (classmum) | 134 comments Somehow the 24 hour ones have never worked out for me. I love the idea of a week-long one. Especially one wrapped around a long weekend! Bring it on!

message 10: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 185 comments This is going to be fun! I didn't make the 144 this year because of a class which ate my brain (I did read about 70 childrens books for this class, but didn't think they should count). Here's to more reading in 2011!!!!

Dana (ngom) | 10 comments The 24 hour readathons sound pretty fun, actually. Might have to insist that a friend or family member take my laptop for those days; I succumb to temptation too easily.

message 12: by Susan (NY) (new)

Susan (NY) I can't wait to try this one!

message 13: by *Nan* (new)

*Nan* (nan4471) I would definately be interested in the catch up read-a-thon. This is a great way to decrease the size of my TBR list.

message 14: by LynnB (new)

LynnB My TBR needs to go way down, too. I'm going to make my physical TBR pile on (and around!) my bookcase the focus of each month, not library books or new books. Last year I was always busy on Read-a-Thon, so this time I am marking my calendar in advance and trying to keep any meetings or appointments to a minimum that week. (Am I organized this year, or what??!!) We'll see if my plan works!

message 15: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 561 comments I have so many books stacked up that I am going to try to do both the Catch-up read-a-thon for the week, as well as the 24-hour one. I will see how it goes to spend the whole week focusing on getting reading done. Can't wait!

message 16: by Athira (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Yay Nancy, WTG! I'm thinking that I should give that a shot too, except I may not be home on Saturday.

The first one is starting this weekend! I better remember to send out a reminder on Friday!

message 17: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I'm off work this week, so I've been pretty much doing the week long read-a-thon this week. If I'm off next week, I'll do the same next week and the 24 hr. one.

message 18: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenvwrites) | 122 comments I want in on the catchup readathon.

message 19: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 247 comments I was so excited for this...but it looks like I may not be able to do it. I was until about today :( We just lost a supervisor at work and with only 2 supervisors at a 24 hr plant it looks like a lot of 12 hour shifts.

message 20: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 137 comments I am so far behind, I realllly need this right now.
I plan on concentrating on the 24hr spree, but will also see what I can accomplish in the week long.

message 21: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I know this is an old thread but I was wondering how often you guys have these read-a-thons? My TBR is getting ridiculous and I seem to do better when I am involved with these read-a-thons.

message 22: by Ann A (new)

Ann A (readerann) Every 3 months! I believe the next one is in November.

message 23: by Athira (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) That's right! Next one is in November. After that, we'll have readathons a little more often, probably once every two months.

message 24: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Thanks! Two months would be really great. Can't wait for November then.
