However, MANY of the books on the list that I haven't read, are on my to read (or to buy) list at home!! Ha Ha.

Some of these, I have on my TBR list, but there are a lot I won't touch...though I swore I would NEVER read "Catcher in the Rye" and really think I need to see what the fuss is about.
Oh, and "Life of Pi" was extraordinary and I recommend that all the time to people. So thought provoking.
Oh, and I agree about Jane Austen and Margaret Atwood...SHUDDER....

How do I get access to the "The Big Read" list and Pen? Please let me know.. thanks

I love lists like this. They always include some books I've never heard of before and I end up finding a gem.

6. The Bible
10. Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
12 Tess of the D'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy
15. Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier
18. Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger
40. Winnie-the-Pooh - AA Milne

67. Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy
76. The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
81. A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens
98. Hamlet - William Shakespeare

I have read a lot of short stories by Kafka, Flannery O'Connor, Hemmingway, and Chekov.

I must say that I am a bit surprised by the list. Many of them are standards on pretty much any list. First surprise? Harry Potter. It's a good series, it is definitely a fun read, but I don't think that it really belongs on this list. Also, Le Petit Prince (Antione de Saint-Exupery) surprised me. I loved the book, I just haven't seen it on too many lists. This is a book that I would love to own.
One more thing, I wouldn't put "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" on this list -- The Narnia Chronicles is already on the list, and the book is part of the set. It seems kind of redundant.

It's an interesting mix of consistently best-listed classic works and popular literture. I am more surprise by the presence of two books that are completely unfamiliar to me, then I am about Harry Potter or Da Vinci code's inclusion.

I also found it amusing that someone asked how a Complete Shakespeare as one book...I actually just bought one for school! They're actually really useful to have.

I think lists like this are totally subjective. I mean, what makes The Time Traveller's Wife better than anything written by Kafka or Kurt Vonnegut? But, I do have a few more books to add to my reading list!

I think someone tried to take 10 top-ten lists and combine them. Let's see, Top ten books I hated in AP English, Top ten series I finished because all my friends were doing it, Top ten classics I'll spend my life meaning to read, Top ten books I wouldn't read if you gave me a million dollars, Top ten books I've never heard of...
