*Nan* (nan4471) I have read 24 of them but have another 10 on my shelves waiting to be read.

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments I've read 38 books off this list with about a dozen on my tbr list. A few of them I have tried and put down (Bleak House-gotta get the audio, I can't read Dickens any other way). This seem similar to the Modern Library reader's favorites list. With some great stuff and some merely popular stuff. Not a bad list in all.
But why is Shakespeare's complete works and Hamlet on here separately?

message 154: by Jaime (new)

Jaime (jaimechm) I counted about 27 that I know I've read with about 5 more that I can't be sure if I actually read. Weird...

message 155: by Karlene (new)

Karlene Staves (karlenestaves) OK, so I've read:
4, 5, 6, 16, 36, 40, 41, 42, 46, 81, 87, 98, 100

However, MANY of the books on the list that I haven't read, are on my to read (or to buy) list at home!! Ha Ha.

message 156: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle Ok, I have read 35 off this list and 30 off the list that Charity directed us too (I haven't finished copying the second 100..am off after this post to do so). I am pretty impressed with myself, but also recognize that I read a TON of stuff when I was younger so now can read *FLUFF* if I want. LOL.

Some of these, I have on my TBR list, but there are a lot I won't touch...though I swore I would NEVER read "Catcher in the Rye" and really think I need to see what the fuss is about.

Oh, and "Life of Pi" was extraordinary and I recommend that all the time to people. So thought provoking.

Oh, and I agree about Jane Austen and Margaret Atwood...SHUDDER....

message 157: by Laura (new)

Laura | 56 comments I've read 44 - not bad. I was surprised by some of the entries as well. His Dark Materials? Liked the series but don't think I would have pegged it as a Top 100.

message 158: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) I've read (and finished) 16 of the books. I had started about 5 of them, but didn't like them, so didn't finish them. I didn't count The Bible as I don't read that from cover to cover. 16 is still more than I thought, since I only started to really attack books about 4 years ago. As a kid/teen I hated reading so didn't do much during that time.

message 159: by Bleuciel (new)

Bleuciel I read like half of them, but what is the Bible doing with 99 fiction books? That's just a bit off. But then again, 'The Da Vinci Code' is listed, so nothing surprises me anymore *eye roll*

message 160: by Clara (new)

Clara | 157 comments I have read 12 out of 100. I will make an effort to do better.

How do I get access to the "The Big Read" list and Pen? Please let me know.. thanks

message 161: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Just Google them and the links will come up.

message 162: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandadiane) | 23 comments Fifteen, but I didn't like reading until the beginning of this summer, so that's good for me. Hahha.

JG (Introverted Reader) 37! That is, if I'm generous and count LOTR even though I didn't quite finish it. I think there were a couple others like that. Who says public educations are no good? Just don't ask me if I remember them all...

message 164: by [deleted user] (new)

Scored 43. Still so many to be read.

message 165: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) 57. There are probably another 10 more I will read at some time. And at least another 20 I will not read under any circumstances.

message 166: by [deleted user] (new)

Congrats, Petra!

message 167: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelamclaughlin) I count 37 that I have read.

message 168: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments I, unfortunately, have only read 8 of these. I will have to put my nose to the grindstone, and start reading more of them. A lot of them are in my TBR list.

message 169: by Axis (new)

Axis | 2 comments I've read around 20-30 of them. I'm kind of disappointed with the list, however. Putting in the Da Vinci Code seems like a bad choice.

message 170: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Only 18 but I am reading two of them now: Alice's adventures in wonderland and Moby Dick.I only read two or three of the Harry Potter serie, but how do you count that?

3. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte

92. The Little Prince - Antoine De Saint-Exupery

message 171: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Thank you Mirela :-)

message 172: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (inscorel) | 24 comments Wow! I have actually read 31 of these books and have a few of them in line to be read soon. This is a much better list than those I have seen before. It makes me feel like I actually have read a significant number of valuable works of literature. Thanks for the confidence booster. :)

message 173: by Vipiflower (new)

Vipiflower | 10 comments I think I've read 22

message 174: by Gail (new)

Gail D.C. | 31 comments I have read about 19 of them. It was a lot better then I thought it was going to be. I can't say that I have read all of shakspear or all of the narnia but I have read a lot of them. As for the rest of the list there are some I think I will check out. If we were including ones we had watched my number would go up by a few. :) Have a good day.

message 175: by rebecca j (new)

rebecca j (technophobe) | 6029 comments I've read 30 of them, but they're the only ones that appealed to me on the list! That means I'm either a lazy reader, or just not into what many people read, I guess! I tend to read only what I'm interested in - if it gets boring, I don't read it.

message 176: by Angela (new)

Angela (blonde_chick120) | 51 comments Ive read 7 from this list. How sad! Actually a lot of them Im not interested in reading. However there are quite a few I would like to read. My TBR list continues to grow.

message 177: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments I've read 34 and have 7 on my TBR list. Alot were read more than 20 years ago when I was a child. It would be interesting to read some of those ones again and see them from an adult's perspective.

message 178: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I have read 10 and I have about five on my TBR list.

message 179: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I've read 40, not counting Animal Farm and Brave New World which I (hate to admit it but...) don't remember a thing about from high school.

I love lists like this. They always include some books I've never heard of before and I end up finding a gem.

message 180: by Becky (new)

Becky (rsnm) 1/5 so far but I own quite a few of the other ones and will read them when I get the time.

message 181: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (mattsmama) | 7 comments I guess I haven't read that many. The ones I read are below. I did not include ones that I started and never finished. And then there were others that I saw the movie or play but never read the book.

6. The Bible
10. Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
12 Tess of the D'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy
15. Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier
18. Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger
40. Winnie-the-Pooh - AA Milne
57. A Tale Of Two Cities - Charles Dickens
61. Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
67. Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy
76. The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
81. A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens
98. Hamlet - William Shakespeare

message 182: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I've only read 7 of these. However, I DID read "The Count of Monte Cristo" in the original French language. I'm rather proud of that.

I have read a lot of short stories by Kafka, Flannery O'Connor, Hemmingway, and Chekov.

message 183: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn Oh. I didn't see Shakespeare. I have read quite a few plays.

message 184: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i've read 23, and about 3 of them i have but haven't read yet.

message 185: by Emilly R (new)

Emilly R (rosario0829e) | 198 comments I have read many of those books, including Jane Austen Pride and prejudice,Victor Hugo,Alice Walker and others, the problem is that no one though to include Latin American writers like Gabriel Garcia Marques,Pablo Neruda and many others like Isabel Allende.

message 186: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I'm not sure how the list was made up but everyone has different views on different books. I personally didn't mind The Da Vinci Code, in fact I thought it was rather good. I don't look too much into how or why the lists were created, just like to browse and see if I can pick up on any books I might like to read in the future.

message 187: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments oh my I am ashamed to admit that I have only read 5 of the books on the very first list. But I have 10 of them...lol

message 188: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (loderkelly) | 1 comments I've read 21 and was very proud of that. Until I read the others post and then I bowed my head in shame.

message 189: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailwerner) I am at 38. Great list, BTW. It's nice to see a mix of old and new. When I was a kid, Little Women and Secret Garden were two of my favorite books. Ever see a particular edition of a book and its cover just takes you back to a certain time and place? That is me with those two!!

message 190: by [deleted user] (new)

I must say that I am a bit surprised by the list. Many of them are standards on pretty much any list. First surprise? Harry Potter. It's a good series, it is definitely a fun read, but I don't think that it really belongs on this list. Also, Le Petit Prince (Antione de Saint-Exupery) surprised me. I loved the book, I just haven't seen it on too many lists. This is a book that I would love to own.

One more thing, I wouldn't put "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" on this list -- The Narnia Chronicles is already on the list, and the book is part of the set. It seems kind of redundant.

message 191: by Liz M (new)

Liz M I've read 65-70 of these, depending on how I count - double points for Narnia & Lion, Witch, Wardrobe, whether I count the book I abandoned 30 pages from the end, and Shakespeare (read about 85% of the complete works).

It's an interesting mix of consistently best-listed classic works and popular literture. I am more surprise by the presence of two books that are completely unfamiliar to me, then I am about Harry Potter or Da Vinci code's inclusion.

message 192: by Liz (new)

Liz I've read 32. A lot of these books I read in high school or are they are commonly seen on summer reading lists. Plus a lot of the ones listed are on my to-read list.
I also found it amusing that someone asked how a Complete Shakespeare as one book...I actually just bought one for school! They're actually really useful to have.

message 193: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments 11 and a half (Haven't finished The Kite Runner yet).

I will have to print this out and get to work.

message 194: by Christine (new)

Christine Mandy: I've read 43. A great list, in my opinion. Very eclectic and current.

message 195: by Liz (new)

Liz Ashley I think you'll enjoy The Kite Runner--It's a beautifully written story. I'd like to see the movie although I doubt it will do the book justice.

message 196: by Kate (new)

Kate | 17 comments I am at 41. I think some of the list is redundant though. The Complete Works of Shakespeare includes Hamlet, for example.

I think lists like this are totally subjective. I mean, what makes The Time Traveller's Wife better than anything written by Kafka or Kurt Vonnegut? But, I do have a few more books to add to my reading list!

message 197: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) And The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe are listed separately...

message 198: by Jey (new)

Jey Wow, I've read 39, and I own 32 others on my personal to-read shelf in my living room.

I think someone tried to take 10 top-ten lists and combine them. Let's see, Top ten books I hated in AP English, Top ten series I finished because all my friends were doing it, Top ten classics I'll spend my life meaning to read, Top ten books I wouldn't read if you gave me a million dollars, Top ten books I've never heard of...

message 199: by Dogwoman (new)

Dogwoman | 4 comments Oh dear, it looks like I have read 69 of them. Hmm, maybe I should get out more....

message 200: by Sherry (new)

Sherry LOL Dogwoman...
