Leslie Hickman (bkread2) | 233 comments Soooo....we have all seem to have been infected with the same disease of the ever growing TBR piles and our abitlities to watch them grow like dust bunnies. What are your methods of getting that lovely ever-growing pile to shrink?? What's your number up to "officially"?

Currently I am up to 182 on the pile, for some control I am not allowed for 4 months to add a book not for an actual book club read till then...I am taking a printout weekly to the library looking for books on my current list and getting them to read each weekend!! At this rate I may be under 150-125 by the end of October!!
;)

Ya know I was just thinking about this. I was adding another book to my "to read" pile last night and wondering if I was getting out of control. I thought of about how many books I read a month and if I strictly read ONLY my TR books It would take me about 6 months at the current rate that Ive been reading. The problem is I always read other books that arent on my list, not to mention adding books.
I think I am going to try to keep my list capped at a certain number or I know myself I'll get overwhelmed with it and just ignore it or quit using that tool. Then when I read a book from my TR list I can add another but not until then.
Silly mind games I play with myself since Id still read anything.

Holli I have 664 to be read books. Its officially ridiculous. I have no clue what to do about it either since I don't read 2 or 3 at a time like I used to. :(

message 4: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments I own 4 books that are currently on my "to read" list, and just bought another 3 to "reread". I am finishing 2 from the library, and have "Curious Incident..." waiting on me, as well.

I have about 50 books on my "to read" list here, which pales in comparison to some members (*cough*Holli!*cough*). I told myself I cannot buy the other 3 books I have been eyeing until I finish atleast 3 of the ones I have waiting.

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments Holli didn't you start a thread to help you reduce the size of your TBR books? Huh!? What happened to that?!! Do we need to ahve an intervention?!

Surprisingly mine is only at 65. But I REALLY want to see an occasional dent being made. So I've learn to not scroll down when I get that update about what friends have added. Though I also do not strictly stick to the list when looking for the next read. I have a pile of Reader Digest Compilations, those books tend to be my filler books. I also find it very had to keep myself from browsing when I take my son to story time. Not to mention I've started volunteering at the library. How can I ignore the books?!

message 6: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I've got about 120 on my shelves at the moment and will be making a substantial purchase shortly, my last big one before saving for a holiday. Problem with all these books is it's so hard to decide which one to read next.

message 7: by Thressa (new)

Thressa | 43 comments I only have 15 on my "to read" list, but that is just because I haven't had time to go through the ones I already have to read. It will still take me forever because I have so much reading to do for school... and with the major exams I have coming up to study for...

message 8: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments Teri I tend to start a few books before I decide which one I am most in the mood to read. But I've never been able to continue reading multiple books. Too confusing!!

message 9: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments I love to read 3-5 books at a time! Then I can always pick up whatever suits my mood.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Christopher Columbus! is my response when I think of my "To Read" list! And holli's!!! (Sorry, I've been reading Little Women!) I have been combing through it lately, removing books. I don't know what I'm up to but I know it's over 100!

message 11: by Sydney (new)

Sydney (sydneyh) I'm up to 329 books to read. I currently own about 50 of those books. At one point I was worried about my out of control list. I'm trying to make a dent in it this summer. I read about a book a week, but even at that rate it will be what, 6+ years before I get all those books off the list? I'm going to try again to hold off on adding anything new to the list, and I'm limiting the books that I buy to only what's for book club. All the rest, I can wait to get from either family members who read or from Bookmooch.

message 12: by Peanut (new)

Peanut | 149 comments I have so many books at home that I don't even bother counting. I usually try to keep my to-read list here updated with books I know I don't have at home. Kind of like a reminder in a way.

How to shrink the pile? Read more dang it! I recently went through the baskets and picked out two bags full. These are books that I won't read anymore (genres that I don't care for anymore). I gave them to my friend. She was happy. Plus it wasn't that much of a waste of money because I bought them cheaply at book sales.

message 13: by Holli (new)

Holli I know I know.........its insane what is happening with my to read list. I start going through those updates and I start clicking away! I like the fact that I now have something that lists all the books I want to read so I can finally get rid of that journal that was keeping track of them all but now I feel the pressure whenever I look at the list LOL What to do...what to do....... ;)

message 14: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments So we are going to a wedding this weekend....about 4 hour drive away. Know what that means....READING TIME!! I'm hoping to go to the library tonight and look for some books off my list. Here is the test.....will I pick something off my list or find something new. Any guesses?

message 15: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments *sigh* Well, I compromized. I did look for and selected a book from my TBR list. But, I was also uncontrollably drawn to the "new" shelves. How can you pass books that are facing out?!? They are so flirtatious that way, showing their cover art!

message 16: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I keep a pile of books TBR in my computer room. I have ~75 there just waiting patiently for my attention. Then I have a downloaded playlist on my IPOD> If I don't have a ton of books waiting for me I cannot sleep at night because I am worried about running out of things to read. I guess you could say I am a tad obsessive!

message 17: by Cyn (new)

Cyn | 263 comments There is the answer right there, MEg...download audio books onto the old ipod!

I don't own many of my "to be read" books, but I do like the idea of hte list here on this site..I can never remember what has been recommended to me when I need to otherwise!

message 18: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Hickman (bkread2) | 233 comments well.. I just finished inventory and I decided to take my holiday on Friday (still had not tken my 4th of July off yet) with a 1/2 day on Thursday that gives me about 4 days of non-stop reading!! Maybe I can get something off of my list!! Ha what a joke. I did manage to get 1/2 through my two books I am now reading this week on Monday waiting on my Mom's doctors appointment to finally be over! Nothing like a 4 hour wait in the waiting room!!

message 19: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) | 143 comments I don't feel so bad, my tbr pile is less than 10 deep... then again, reading everyone else's tbr lists makes me want to buy more :) hmm, perhaps I'll make a much-deserved trip to Borders tomorrow

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) A different kind of to be read pile: I just went through 3 of the book cases in our living room and purged 28 books from their shelves! They're going to get donated to the senior apt house in town some time in August with whatever's left in the basement that I didn't donate in May.

message 21: by Babs (new)

Babs (thereadinggal) | 2 comments Let's see - my "to read" pile on Goodreads is at 45 - but that does not count the ones lying around my hosue. The 45 are just the ones I added while adding my books. :^) I will never be able to stop myself from buying books. I guess if I ever really feel the need to shrink the pile I just put them on my official bookshelves and then it is ike pretending that I read them. :^) I probably have another 30-40 lying around my house that would be part of my "to read" pile.

message 22: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andreag) | 74 comments My TBR list on Goodreads are books I actually own, but haven't read yet. My TBR-but-don't-own-yet list is actually my Powells Books online wish list. I do have to go through the wish list and remove a few - since Powells doesn't seem to limit how many books you can put on you're wish list and I get two book reviews a day from them, my total list there is probably over 200 books. I'm sure I'll never get to all of them.

message 23: by Therese (new)

Therese | 60 comments My TBR pile is over 330...I can't help it-I love finding new books. It has caused a real problem when I pick for my RL book club because I have too many to pick from!

message 24: by Brandie (new)

Brandie (brandiemichelle) not counting the hundreds on my 'to read' list on here...i have borrowed 17 from friends and own 30 that i need to read. so 47 need to be read in my immediate future and i figure i can get them done in a few months. but there's always something new that gets added!! i try to keep it managable - because reading is supposed to be for pleasure...and i hate stressing out about how many books i have to read! but i set a goal for myself to read at least 100 books this year...so i am just bringing it on myself. lol.
