What are some books that you have read that started out slow, but eventually picked up and stayed on the freeway until the end?

Me personally, I like books that are fast paced from beginning to end. But, I do know that some books are slow starters, but once the car gets the right kind of gas, the book takes off traveling.

Arch, I've found that a lot of books are like that for me lately. And they turn out to be really good books.

I like when slow starts turn into face pace.

Me too!

Bekah (bekah317) | 93 comments Start Me Up (Tumble Creek, #2) by Victoria Dahl this book sorta was a bit slow for me compared to her other contemps. I found the interactions between the h/h a little awkward at first, but once it did start up, it was a great ride!

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments Most of Marian Keyes' books are like that, slow to start but once the setup is there, it just rolls.

Erica*aka* KHAOZ Flores (ladye78texas) | 21 comments For me Covet was a slow starter for me . I kept reading & then would stop . It took me a long long while to get myself to continue .

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) Outlander was that way for me. It didn't pick up until about 100 pages in.....then I flew through it. I didn't get any sleep that night!

message 11: by ~Jennifer~ (new)

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) Outlander was the same for me, but once she went back through the stones I ended up reading until I had the first 3 books done in 4½ days. Won't ever do that again. Major overload. lol I still can't bring myself to finish Drums of Autumn.

Shellbelle | 161 comments Dark Lover was def a book that was like that for me. I tried to read it 3 times before I finally got into it. Also A Hunger Like No Other, I tried reading it and had to push myself to keep reading, because everyone kept saying how good it was, and I was so glad I did. Both of those series are now my two fav PNR series ever!;)

Another one was The Host, it really dragged at the begining, but once the action started I couldn't put it down!

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) | 381 comments You know, I always thought it was just me. I read so much sometimes I'm kinda bored with it ... then I'll read something really great and realize its just a difference in authors'.

message 14: by AlbertaJenn (new)

AlbertaJenn The most recent one was Betrayal by Mayandree Michel . Had to get to the fourth chapter before it picked up. And was it worth it!

I also agree with Shellebelle that The Host (The Host, #1) by Stephenie Meyer was like that. You need to get past the first 40 pages, then things pick up.

Although I haven't read it, I have heard from people that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium Trilogy Series #1) by Stieg Larsson is very much like that.

Katya | 327 comments My favorite series of all time is the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning

but I must say that I had to push myself in the middle of the first book Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning

Once I got over the hump...towards the end of book 1...I got hooked bad.....and it was smooth sailing from that point forward and I ended up sucking the rest of the series up like candy.

Michelle(Chelle) aka Nightshade - Cake Whisperer (michmag) Definitely The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. You have to read at least 100 pages before it starts to get interesting but after that I couldn't put it down and finished that one and the next two in about a week.

Another book somewhat like that was Mistress of the Art of Death Mistress of the Art of Death (Mistress of the Art of Death, #1) by Ariana Franklin . A bit slow to start but what an excellent series. Anxiously awaiting the next book.

I love this series. I've read the first two books and they are amazing reads. They do start out a bit slow but once they get going...watch out!

A friend at work got me started on this series and I couldn't be more pleased. I love everything about these books. Can't wait until her next book comes out. I may have to do a re-read of the previous books to remind me where we left off since I read them all last year.

There are already 4 books in the series published

Mistress of the Art of Death (Mistress of the Art of Death Series #1) by Ariana Franklin The Serpent's Tale by Ariana Franklin Grave Goods (Mistress of the Art of Death, #3) by Ariana Franklin A Murderous Procession (Mistress of the Art of Death Series #4) by Ariana Franklin

Sadly Ariana Franklin passed away earlier this year so unless they get a ghostwriter, I don't believe there will be anymore.

I had no idea. That is awful news. My friend at work will be sorry to hear that as well. I usually follow my favorite authors more closely but I wasn't anticipating a new novel until the end of this year so I hadn't followed up recently. Thanks for letting me know.

No problem.
I read the first two books and then went to look Ariana Franklin up on the wikipedia and there it was. I was stunned.

I'm reading BDB and NH at the same time. Dark Lover did start out slow but boy howdy did it pick up just fine.

message 24: by Komal (last edited Feb 01, 2012 04:06PM) (new)

Komal I agree Katya, Darkfever was hard to get into. For me it picked up towards the end. Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead was a slow start as well but it was great after book one. Dark Night by Gena Showalter was a slow start to the series IMO. But after book one, the series went like a bullet.

message 25: by Katya (new)

Yes, I had to read like a hundred pages....not knowing what it was about until I got into the meat of the story and understood why they had to give us all that background for: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson

message 27: by Gwen (new)

Gwen (gwenk) | 161 comments For me it was Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander." It was so boring in the beginning that I was practically crawling word for word ... and then it just took off. If I hadn't kept reading, I would have missed out on one of the best series ever!
