Just an FYI, today's special value on QVC is the Sansa Clip+ 8gb. I paid a little less than their price but they'll let you pay in 3 payments and in my experience their customer service is excellent if you have a problem.

Janet, you beat me to the punch, I was just heading over here to post the same thing. I think what makes it more of a value, is the disk with 1,000 oldies that comes with it, unless the Clip+ always comes with some disk or other. Plus, I didn't know it had an FM tuner, I've been looking for a small device with a tuner for years. Needless to say, I bought one after all the discussion on it over here. It'll be interesting to see if it replaces my beloved iPod Shuffle. Now I'll have to go back and re-read the posts about folders and stuff..

Carol - I repeat that it's important that you edit the mp3 tagging to reflect "audiobook" rather than "history, mystery, fiction, etc." as Overdrive uses. Otherwise, the bookmarking function won't work, although the book will still resume at the same point as long as you don't exit it at some point.
I don't know if this is the right place to put this , but wanted to report my experience.I get most of my books from the library and audible , but have occaisionally used www.weread4you.com when they have a sale .
Last time I ordered a double book The Notebook & the Wedding by Nicholas sparks and when I finally got around to trying to listen to it found that there was only one of the books . This morning I wrote a mail to weread4you and got a reply with an appology saying that they had already added the missing book to my library and as a gesture of goodwill I could choose any audibook from them free of charge. I asked for The Passage feeling a bit guilty knowing it was an expensive one , but it wasn't available to me anywhere else and have been wanting it for a while, just checked and it's in my library ....wow great service !!!!
I think this could be a new Topic as I would look at any site, gadget, shops and services etc. when it has been so highly recommended. Not books though, there is a topic already as a topic. It could be titled HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Just a thought.
Yes, thanks John, this was the tip I was going to go back in search of.I will be using iTunes, and it's category is "Books and Spoken." Is that good enough?

I don't think so, but you can try exiting a file tagged as such, and seeing if you're offered a "Return to the Same Point?" option when you go back to that book. If not, you'll need to see that your book is tagged either "Audiobook" or "Audio Book" (doesn't seem to matter which).
I got my Clip+ today...didn't realize it would be so tiny...lol. Can't believe how good the audio quality is for music. Downloaded The Devil All the Time via Overdrive and it's playing. The only problem I'm having is the menus appear to be written in Sanskrit...any idea how to change that?
I was shocked by how tiny the device was, too. What do you mean by "Sanskrit" exactly? Obviously you managed to get through them to get your book to play.
I was just joking...it's probably Chinese since it's made it China. I just kept pressing the buttons until my book came up....that part shows in English but the menu options must be written in Chinese. I may have to call tech support.
That is truly bizzare! You are probably best getting an answer from them. However, if you want to try yourself ...The main menu should have "international" symbols, such as headphones for "music" etc. Scroll down until you see the "Settings" icon of four parallel bars, and go to the right (follow the arrow) to get in there. The fourth choice should get you into System Settings, where you again "go right" and then scroll down to the fourth choice for language, where you can then find English listed.
Good luck!
I've got a question for the group. My library is changing it's digital services from Overdrive to a service called One Click Digital (Overdrive raised their prices to the library). Does anybody know anything about this? I got a preview of it this morning and it looks good, but I've never heard of it. I'd love to know what others think of it.

I got my ipod touch and I love it but I must be doing something wrong because it only takes me like 5 minutes to download an audiobook from Overdrive onto my phone and sansa clip, but it took me like an hour to download one book onto the touch the other night.
My library had both Overdrive and NetLibrary, dropping the latter when it changed over to One Click. I asked a few weeks ago if we're going to get access back, and was told, "Yes, eventually ...."
My library also switched to OneClick. I downloaded a book to my laptop (as I normally do) but when I tried to transfer it to my Clip, it wasn't allowed. Any one else have this trouble?
I'm assuming it was a WMA book? Did you open the book in Windows Media Player first, to validate the license?
Alief wrote: "My library also switched to OneClick. I downloaded a book to my laptop (as I normally do) but when I tried to transfer it to my Clip, it wasn't allowed. It is a pain and there is probably an easier way but I am not great at this stuff.
I can't do anything more than preview titles at this point. I sure hope it's as easy as Overdrive. If not, I'll be asking you all for help. I think I'll download as many as Overdrive will let me before the switch.

I like this idea Julie. It will help a lot when picking new audio books.
Elizabeth, you can see if you can get an ecard from a larger city in your state if you are from a smaller city. I am part of CWMars (Central and Western MA) and BPL (Boston) and I find that BPL sometimes has more selection or will have the book I want available when it isn't at CW. Maybe the big city library will use Overdrive. I haven't used anything but Overdrive and I like it. I hope that you can figure it all out!
I get most of my audiobooks from Audible and when I run out of credits I usually check what the library has to offer. It is not very often though that I actually find something interesting there. There is usually a long wait for the interesting books. I listen on my Ipod nano.

I checked the libraries you suggested, though, and they don't allow borrowers from outside the area. Thanks for suggesting them. Philadelphia, does though, and that might be an alternative. I'm going to give it a chance first. In the meantime I've been loading CD's into iTunes so I don't run out of listening materials.
Hi all. I get mine from the library. Our county has a decent intercounty loan process, so if we don't have it we can often get it from another one. I usually listen to them on my long daily commute. We have a group that shares them at work so often I copy them into my iTunes and put on my iPod. Our library also has something called playaways, which are books on devices that look like ipods.
when you download them from the library, can you still listen to the books after they are 'returned'? my fear is that i won't finish listening to it before it's due.
I could when I had my Creative MUVO....don't know about the Sansa Clip+ as I haven't had it very long...I'm sure someone here knows.
I'm sure someone knows about the iphone too. They always expire on Overdrive but from what I hear it's variable with the portable devices.
I am listening on my ipod and as long as they are on the device (and were moved there before return date) I can listen to them even after expiration. So if I borrow multiple books I just load them all to the ipod and leave them there until I feel like listening to them.

Can you bookmark so you don't lose your place? How does that work on the ipod. You answered a question I had about books expiring. Thakns.

You can do this with multiple audiobooks too and it remembers your place in all of them.
I have the Ipod nano 6th generation.
That sounds good. I didn't know how it worked. Sounds like it is a good option. Especially since you can do so many other things on it - especially with the ipod touch get free wireless if you are within range and you don't have to pay for the service wtih the providers. That way I like to look up locations, restaurants, phonenumbers etc. when I am out. Thanks for the info, Danni.

I have understood that some of the Kindles can actually read Ebooks aloud. Anyone tried? Does it sound good?

i don't know. i am still listening to my first book and it is on my iphone
The Kindle has text to speech -- it sort of sounds like a robot reading the book to you. I prefer actual audiobooks but it would be great for people who physically can't read due to heath problems. You can load audiobooks onto both the Kindle and Nook -- both have external speakers and headphone jacks. If you have an audible account you can automatically load your audiobooks onto your Kindle.
I have just joined Audible. Does anyone know their returns policy. Can an audio be returned withing a specific timeperiod? I listen to the audios on my Kindle 3. .
I don't believe Audible has a returns policy at all, unless, I suppose, you could convince a rep that you ordered a book "by mistake" or something, to get a one-time exemption. They provide samples so folks will have an idea of what they're getting themselves in for ahead of time (in theory anyway).I understand that audio listening takes up a lot battery power on e-readers. I have some mp3 stuff on my Sony (podcasts, stories, shorter books, etc.), but rarely use it for listening.
For audiobooks, I'd really recommend getting a Clip Zip (Clip+), which handles Audible and library books well.
Thank you, John. I am considering getting a MP3, now that I know I like audios. I will go check out a clip zip.
Chrissie wrote: "Thank you, John. I am considering getting a MP3, now that I know I like audios. I will go check out a clip zip."I have a Clip and it's been great although I now usually listen on my phone. I am not sure what the font is on the clip zip.
