Michelle Gilmore | 3220 comments I know there are other factors to consider besides ratings and reviews when we decide to read a book - favorite author, part of series, a trusted friend recommends it to us, etc. I do look at the goodreads ratings and reviews, but I also get on a roll with particular genre, or romantic theme to help me pick out my next book. I'm just wondering what motivates other to choose their next read.

Debbie (halfpint66) | 138 comments For me it's author if I already read them.
Series if I'm already reading it.
Friend's recommendations
Title and/or cover and blurb if it's by an author I don't know.

message 3: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Hmmm.
My next read is determined by:
Group Reads for the month

What month it is (ex: Christmas books for December)

After that? When it was added to my GR TBR shelf. I try to read them in the order I added them, so I don't end up putting off a book for extremely long and then losing interest in it.

Adding to my TBR list comes from reviews, ratings, recommendations of friends, if it's an author I really like and they have a new release I'll go buy it, if it's a series I tried and there are others I'll check them out at library or buy, and last if I happen to be in the store and see a cover that catches my eye and the synopsis sounds like it'd be good then I'll pick it up. Though I haven't had the best of luck with this last one.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1416 comments I just randomly pick after studying my shelf for a few minutes. Unless I'm reading a series and have the next ones on hand, then I continue on. Otherwise it's just whatever I'm feeling at the moment.

message 5: by Zee (new)

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) Usually which one coems next in my TBR list/pile. I try to go through them by oldest first.
That being said, if I've read say, too many historicals in a row and all the stories are starting to get confused in my head, I'll swap to a different genre for the next read, just to give my brain a break.

Lina | 5563 comments I'm like you Michelle, I seem to get in moods, so will read 3-4 paranormals and then think, "I need a change" and will read a couple of historicals and then go back to contemp... there's so many sub genres to enjoy.

message 7: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellelisa) | 17 comments Whatever my mood is at the time.I like to pick as i go in my challenges because i hate the "tied down" feeling with my books.I always keep about 200 books in my tbr pile for that very reason.

Yes, there are a lot of sub-genre's to enjoy. I wish I could paid to read!

message 9: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments Usually I have a specific theme or genre that I'm in the mood to read. So I'll just grap a book to fit that mood. Normally I have 2 or 3 books going at once.

If I'm not in the mood for a particular genre-then I will usually pick up a book from my 1st In A Series, Next In A Series or my Stand Alone goodreads shelves.

lol, Michelle, the number of times I've said / thought that I'd be a rich woman if I could get paid to read... plus my purchases could count as business expenses.. talk about a fantasy life!! Oh well, we can dream.

I always wonder how some of my goodreads friends breeze through books the way they do. I mean, I could get rid of cable tv, but I don't want too. I don't talk on the phone too much, and I enjoy spending time at home. What's the secret?

How many series do you have going at one time?

message 13: by Mary X (last edited Apr 19, 2011 05:37PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments Series? I probably have 100 series going at once. But I'm only actively reading 2-3 books at once. I read a lot of romance & mysteries though that while technically part of a series, don't have to be read back to back to follow them. They're really just connected by common characters with no real continuing story arch. And really could be read out of order.

As for series that really need to be read in order and have story lines that go through more than 1 book (Sookie Stackhouse, Dresden Files for example)-those I try to read somewhat close together so I still remember what's happening. I only have a few of those going. I probably only 100 like that but only actively read a few of them so I can keep them apart.

message 14: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments Wow Mary! 100 series at a time? That's amazing. Do you also read stand-alone or do you prefer to stick to series books?

Michelle - a lack of sleep is the only way I've found to get more reading time... but that's more about whether or not I can put down the book down :-)

I know, I've thought the same thing. I usually make myself a list of 10 for each month, and I never finish the list each time. That means I can manage at most 2 a week, which is about 8.
Anyways, I'm like you. I don't go out hardly at all (kids' school events, to play cards once a month). I don't watch a lot of tv, usually I DVR and can watch it all in one day. A TV day once a week is really nice actually.
I used to think I was a quick reader. Now, I'm just like "Wow! Guess not, huh?" Ha ha!

message 16: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments Audiobooks are great for getting more reading time in while driving, cleaning, walking etc..,

Most of those "series" I have going could really be stand alones. They have no ongoing stories and can be read in any order. Like romances whose only real connection is that they're related or friends with others in the series. Or mysteries with the same detective each story but no ongoing plot lines.

I'm not really a "series addict" it just seems like every book now is part of a series. Even if they aren't really connected by much.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Oh, Kristi! Yeah, I thought I was a fast reader too; GoodReads shattered that illusion. LOL!

Caro B, I said WOW! when I saw Mary's 100 series post...then I thought about it. Seems like I've got that many going too. LOL!

Mary, I know! What is with all the series? Just a marketing gimmick? Sometimes.

message 18: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments Some of them are just out of control. Many times they are billed as part of a series and the characters are only in 1 book. They just happen to be in the same military branch or are connected by a thread. I don't really worry about reading series like that out of order or with long breaks in between.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments So what do I do today when I got to B&N? I buy a couple of series books. I'm sick. I am a book-a-holic!

Lina | 5563 comments hi Everyone, My name is Carob and I'm a book-a-holic. Love it, Lisa. It's funny, because it's true! Or should that be, it would be funny, if it weren't true? hmm, *shrugs* I'll look on the bright side of that one... now back to my book...

message 21: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments LOL! I would join AA, but that would involve buying another book!

message 22: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Gilmore | 3220 comments There's nothing wrong with being a book-a-holic!!!!! I just hope I don't end up like that guy in that one Twilight Zone episode. You know, the one that loved to read, found himself the last person alive on earth, found a bunch of books, and then broke his glasses.
