Boof, this was a great idea for a thread!
Book addicts admitting and confronting thier addiction, and still being able to stand tall and proud and not have to appologise for it!!!
Why havent we talked about this before?

1) I have a Masters in English therefore it is EXPECTED of me to own lots of books and I must live up to those expectations
2) I'm NOT a crack addict
a) all that money I'm not spending on crack needs to be spent on something
b) I should reward myself constantly for never smoking crack
3) Today is _______ (fill in the blank) so it is a good day to buy a book or two.

Hey, for at least giving it a try, I should reward myself with a book....

I kept "forgetting" to turn in the "please don't send this month's selection" forms. Darn. Seriously, though, I had been spending too much money on it so I reluctantly cancelled my membership. Luckily, they told me about a new deal for favored members (i.e., those who have spent oooooodles of money with them): I just order whenever I wish and don't have to deal with the whole monthly selection accept/reject thing.
I always thought I should be the poster child for QPC.

You could be my long lost sister as I always felt the same way for QPC. :)

I've always wanted another sister!

LOL, Heather, I love your reasoning and that is exactly what I was going to say too.
OK, here goes. I started this thread because I had an idea that I would have about 50-60 unread books and was curious to see if that was a low or high number. When I posted I hadn't counted yet. So, off I go with a pen and paper, tracking down all my lovely shiny books and some minutes later I was absolutley HORRIFIED to learn that I actually had 186! How the hell did it get to that number without me realising?
So, after a good nights sleep I now present to you my rationale:
1) some people spend their hard earned money on shoes and handbags (OK, I do that too, maybe not such a good example)
2) like Heather says, I am NOT a crack addict so I need to spend my money on something and should be rewarded for not having crack habit in way of books
3) a book addiction is educational whereas a crack habbit is not
4) I was abducted by aliens who planted a magnetic device in me that pulls me towards every bookstore there is. This device also has an earpeice that whispers in my ear "pick it up, walk to the check out, there don't you feel better now?"
So, I stand before you, tall and proud and say "My name is Boof and I'm a book addict" and for this confession I think I should reward myself (with a few more books of course).

I prefer to go book huntings when there is book fair or discount week.. grab some books enough for for few weeks/months.. then I don't have to worry when I have less money but wanted to read new book..

My husband reckons that if a was a superhero I would girl-with-a-superhuman-thirst-for-knowledge.
There must be more of us out there. Come out, come out, wherever you are!

By the way, thank you everyone for bringing up QPB. I immediately got on the site and started choosing books. Granted, I am holding off on the actual purchase right now because I have some bills to pay first. Do you think that Sprint might waive my late fee if they knew that I spent my money on books?

Used to belong to QVC, and they had some lovely books.

I believe when the mothership comes, my first question will be: "Do you have to be a resident to check out books from your library?"

My reasoning (adapted from the crack ones)?
1. I quit smoking (again).
2. All the money that is not going to cigarettes needs to go somewhere ($4 a day = lots of books)
3. I should be constantly rewarded for not smoking.
4. I work in a used bookstore and all the books have been telling me how much happier they would be at my house instead of going home with people who will ruin them.
I think this community will make me feel less guilty about the fact that I own 5 bookshelves and no couch.

As I suspect that the aliens now know our plan we must now talk in code:
fweeeee fiddi gwirp drooooooooooo fuddi
OK?
Ok, so much for the 22 unread books I have. I just added three more to the pile, without having finished any.... haa haa... I cant help myself...Especially when they are cheap!

Granted, it is always nice to have FREE books that you've really been wanting to read anyway, but now I have to bump those up on my reading list so that I can return them to him in a timely fashion. Sheesh...I feel like I'm cheating on my poor books that have been sitting there for so long untouched...
That's what I do. When somebody passes books on to me or even suggests them I forego the ones that have been sitting there patiently for years!

OK, went and counted...34 that I have purchased/mooched, and 2 from the library.
And so you all realize how bad this sickness (to read SOO many books)...I've got 5 requested from the library, I plan on buying a book every week that I lose weight as a reward. And we were camping last weekend and the campsite we were at was mostly permanent RV sites...well, there was a garage sale that said "books & VHS tapes"...so I forced DH to walk with me to find that site and look around on the table. There were only about 20 books, and the only one that I would read I already had read, lol...so I didn't pick any up. But I was ready to borrow money from my MIL to get books for cheap, haha!

There is also 3 left from the library.
I blame this on the fact that a) there are some books that I bought a long time ago and am no longer interested in, b) school. It was hard enough to find time to sleep or watch TV while tackling all the essays and exams that required work all day and then c) the fact that books have become like comfort food - I'm sad or depressed --> go to the bookstore/library --> become happy --> end up buying/borrowing.
Honestly, I have about 54 books that I haven't read at home. But I have a bunch of books at my parents home out of state that I haven't read yet so I think it is a lot more.

My books are housed in our dining room because I still don't have that house with a library yet and I often sit at the table and gaze at the books still waiting for me to read them. I think about the places they will take me. How many things, people and places I have yet to explore. It just makes me feel good to know that I have so much patiently waiting for me until I can get around to them...even if it takes years.
Stacie the romantic reader. I haven't counted either but I think I am compelled to do so.
Not that I want this to happen, but I think if I am a widower in my old age I will indundate my house with books, stacks of them everywhere so I'll have to be careful when I move not to knock them over.
