Bluedaizy | 135 comments OMG maybe that's why I have insomnia so bad...too many books to read! Naaaaaahhh! I'd sleep in a bed of books if they weren't so pointy. Talking about love of books, just makes me wish I could hug each and every one of them.

Boof, this was a great idea for a thread!
Book addicts admitting and confronting thier addiction, and still being able to stand tall and proud and not have to appologise for it!!!

Why havent we talked about this before?

message 54: by Siobian (new)

Siobian I swear, Lori, you should start charging people for therapy.

Not a bad idea... haa haa

message 56: by Heather (new)

Heather I have well over 200 books I haven't read yet (won't mention how many I own that I have read). My rationales are

1) I have a Masters in English therefore it is EXPECTED of me to own lots of books and I must live up to those expectations
2) I'm NOT a crack addict
a) all that money I'm not spending on crack needs to be spent on something
b) I should reward myself constantly for never smoking crack
3) Today is _______ (fill in the blank) so it is a good day to buy a book or two.

message 57: by Siobian (new)

Siobian LOL, Heather, I like your way of thinking!

message 58: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 159 comments HeatherR, I LOVE your reasoning for buying books (especially 2 and all it's subparts). I think I'll use some of those the next time my husband looks askance at me when I either bring home new books or have them come in the mail (I've tried to wean myself from Quality Paperback Club, but alas and alack, it's not to be).

Hey, for at least giving it a try, I should reward myself with a book....

message 59: by Heather (new)

Heather Val, personally I think you deserve to buy yourself two books for your effort!

message 60: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 159 comments Oh at least! And the fact that I am limiting myself to only two should count for something....maybe one more?

message 61: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments How is QPC are they really Q ??? :)

Tim (Mole) The Gunslinger (Mole) | 103 comments isnt it funny that we are all saying the same thing! Face it people were all book Junkies none of us here can pass up free or cheap books!!And yes ive got a hundred unread books and ill probably buy 1 hundred more im insatiable when it comes to the written word!lol

message 63: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 159 comments ScottK, QPC is definitely Q! They have a fantastic selection and the books are great quality. And get this...great prices! I'm a real fan of it.

message 64: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Val,QPC is my favorite bookclub. The selection is awesome, the price is good and I prefer trade paperback to hardcover. They often offer books I can't find in the bookstore, which is another bonus and you can find some good deals on-line for clearence.

message 65: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 159 comments Sherry, I also prefer the trade paperback and am much more inclined to purchase that rather than a hardcover.

I kept "forgetting" to turn in the "please don't send this month's selection" forms. Darn. Seriously, though, I had been spending too much money on it so I reluctantly cancelled my membership. Luckily, they told me about a new deal for favored members (i.e., those who have spent oooooodles of money with them): I just order whenever I wish and don't have to deal with the whole monthly selection accept/reject thing.

I always thought I should be the poster child for QPC.

message 66: by Sherry (new)

Sherry That's how i do it.I was tempted to quit but there's too many good books and good deals that I can't bring myself to do it.

You could be my long lost sister as I always felt the same way for QPC. :)

message 67: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 159 comments I know, I'm so excited to find someone else who even knows about it! It's not that I go around talking about it, but whenever I have mentioned it, no one knew what I was talking about.

I've always wanted another sister!

message 68: by Sherry (new)

Sherry *LOL* me too!Isn't great to not feel like you're the only one who knows what you're talking about?

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Right, now it's time for me to fess up.

LOL, Heather, I love your reasoning and that is exactly what I was going to say too.

OK, here goes. I started this thread because I had an idea that I would have about 50-60 unread books and was curious to see if that was a low or high number. When I posted I hadn't counted yet. So, off I go with a pen and paper, tracking down all my lovely shiny books and some minutes later I was absolutley HORRIFIED to learn that I actually had 186! How the hell did it get to that number without me realising?

So, after a good nights sleep I now present to you my rationale:

1) some people spend their hard earned money on shoes and handbags (OK, I do that too, maybe not such a good example)

2) like Heather says, I am NOT a crack addict so I need to spend my money on something and should be rewarded for not having crack habit in way of books

3) a book addiction is educational whereas a crack habbit is not

4) I was abducted by aliens who planted a magnetic device in me that pulls me towards every bookstore there is. This device also has an earpeice that whispers in my ear "pick it up, walk to the check out, there don't you feel better now?"

So, I stand before you, tall and proud and say "My name is Boof and I'm a book addict" and for this confession I think I should reward myself (with a few more books of course).

message 70: by Arinamidalem (new)

Arinamidalem I got 17 on my waiting box and I am not in a hurry...
I prefer to go book huntings when there is book fair or discount week.. grab some books enough for for few weeks/months.. then I don't have to worry when I have less money but wanted to read new book..

message 71: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Lori, the one good thing about having thrown my "system" out the window in the last three months is that I actually read more now, I think is the desire to read everything I have at home, where before I was always letting that final book last a little longer until I got the chance to go to the book store.

message 72: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) All this alien talk reminded me of Man in Black ... I might put that on for the girls while I make Brunch ... ;o)

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Hah! So I'm not the only one. Maybe there really is a spaceship hovering above NJ and Yorkshire and we have been singled out to read everything.

My husband reckons that if a was a superhero I would girl-with-a-superhuman-thirst-for-knowledge.

There must be more of us out there. Come out, come out, wherever you are!

message 74: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments I wish I could blame my book spending on aliens.

By the way, thank you everyone for bringing up QPB. I immediately got on the site and started choosing books. Granted, I am holding off on the actual purchase right now because I have some bills to pay first. Do you think that Sprint might waive my late fee if they knew that I spent my money on books?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments The great thing about the History Book Club (I'm a non-fiction junkie) is that it has the "don't send this month's choice" form online. We were always forgetting to mail it in, and getting books we didn't want, as a result, with other clubs.

Used to belong to QVC, and they had some lovely books.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Exactly Ken. And when we are beamed up, we (and the others who haven't come forward yet) will have such a great library and knowledge between us that we can overthrow the aliens and take over the world..................Waaaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha (evil plan laugh).

message 77: by Bluedaizy (new)

Bluedaizy | 135 comments hehehehehee I can just picture that: "no wait! I still have books I have to pack! Don't beam me up yet!"

message 78: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) Believe it or not I have 100's of unread books at home! Some women buy shoes....I buy books. lol.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Ah, Kathy, that's music to my ears. Personally, I buy both, but I don't have as many unworn pairs of shoes as I do unread books, LOL.

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm near the century mark.

message 81: by [deleted user] (new)

I believe when the mothership comes, my first question will be: "Do you have to be a resident to check out books from your library?"

message 82: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 95 comments I have one book I haven't read yet, the ret have all been read. I need to find a new place to store my books

message 83: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments I have to say that unfortunately I probably have over 2 times as many books unread as read...I recently just started to read again this year so I figured that the ratio would get better...nope...I just keep on buying more books to read...and I have all these V.C. Andrews books that I bought when I was younger and never read and now I do not really even want to read them anymore...but on the other hand I feel that I spent all that money on them so I should...kinda puts me in a lil bit of a predicament huh?

message 84: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 79 comments I don't have an exact count of owned TBR books as they are currently in boxes from my move! I can say that it is not in the hundred's, but I am working on increasing that number :) I like the idea of separating my GR to-be-read shelf into owned and borrowed/ing as many are borrows from my friends. It's nice to see so many with the same (good) addiction. I too buy shoes, purses, and books to feed my habit!!

message 85: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 285 comments Wow and I felt guilty for the physical to-read pile being as tall as I am. There are 71 books in the pile and another 11 from the library.

My reasoning (adapted from the crack ones)?
1. I quit smoking (again).
2. All the money that is not going to cigarettes needs to go somewhere ($4 a day = lots of books)
3. I should be constantly rewarded for not smoking.
4. I work in a used bookstore and all the books have been telling me how much happier they would be at my house instead of going home with people who will ruin them.

I think this community will make me feel less guilty about the fact that I own 5 bookshelves and no couch.

message 86: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Hehehe. That's great, Liz! I love it and you do deserve whatever you want for quitting smoking.

message 87: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 79 comments I agree, Liz, you absolutely deserve all those books for quitting smoking! Congrats on that by the way!!

message 88: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Reading books is a much HEALTHIER hobby than smoking, so more power to you!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Lisa, is that code for admitting that you are one of us?

As I suspect that the aliens now know our plan we must now talk in code:

fweeeee fiddi gwirp drooooooooooo fuddi

OK?

message 90: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Ok, so much for the 22 unread books I have. I just added three more to the pile, without having finished any.... haa haa... I cant help myself...Especially when they are cheap!

message 91: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Oh yes...thanks to my little bro, I now have 6 more on my pile.

Granted, it is always nice to have FREE books that you've really been wanting to read anyway, but now I have to bump those up on my reading list so that I can return them to him in a timely fashion. Sheesh...I feel like I'm cheating on my poor books that have been sitting there for so long untouched...

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

That's what I do. When somebody passes books on to me or even suggests them I forego the ones that have been sitting there patiently for years!

message 93: by Bree (last edited Jul 29, 2008 01:40PM) (new)

Bree (coffeebeanbookshelf) The books I haven't read yet that are in my house right now...hmm...

OK, went and counted...34 that I have purchased/mooched, and 2 from the library.

And so you all realize how bad this sickness (to read SOO many books)...I've got 5 requested from the library, I plan on buying a book every week that I lose weight as a reward. And we were camping last weekend and the campsite we were at was mostly permanent RV sites...well, there was a garage sale that said "books & VHS tapes"...so I forced DH to walk with me to find that site and look around on the table. There were only about 20 books, and the only one that I would read I already had read, lol...so I didn't pick any up. But I was ready to borrow money from my MIL to get books for cheap, haha!

message 94: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I just counted and it is 39(!!).
There is also 3 left from the library.

I blame this on the fact that a) there are some books that I bought a long time ago and am no longer interested in, b) school. It was hard enough to find time to sleep or watch TV while tackling all the essays and exams that required work all day and then c) the fact that books have become like comfort food - I'm sad or depressed --> go to the bookstore/library --> become happy --> end up buying/borrowing.

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

Honestly, I have about 54 books that I haven't read at home. But I have a bunch of books at my parents home out of state that I haven't read yet so I think it is a lot more.

message 96: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (dreamstonone) | 5 comments I have 122 unread books and that is not counting the 30 or so books I have for my e-reader). I read a ton of books, but I go and buy a lot. Usually, I'll buy around 10 or so at the used book store at a time and depending on the sale, I'll get a few from Barnes and Noble. I have not allowed myself to buy very many books lately, so I have started to see a hole in my to read bookshelf, which is one of my goals. Hopefully, by the end of next year, my to read bookshelf will be down to and stay down to a manageable size.

message 97: by Stacie (new)

Stacie So, I didn't originally count how many unread books I have and still haven't. However, I did do a rough count of one shelf (I have 4) and came up with about 50...My point that I am slowly trying to make is that I don't feel overwhelmed by the amount of unread books I have at all. I actually feel rather good about it.

My books are housed in our dining room because I still don't have that house with a library yet and I often sit at the table and gaze at the books still waiting for me to read them. I think about the places they will take me. How many things, people and places I have yet to explore. It just makes me feel good to know that I have so much patiently waiting for me until I can get around to them...even if it takes years.

message 98: by [deleted user] (new)

Stacie the romantic reader. I haven't counted either but I think I am compelled to do so.

Not that I want this to happen, but I think if I am a widower in my old age I will indundate my house with books, stacks of them everywhere so I'll have to be careful when I move not to knock them over.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I love you lot. You make me feel so normal.

message 100: by Mimmi (new)

Mimmi (onedrwumn) | 34 comments Thanks to GR, I am trying to figure out what I have and what I need to read. I know I counted my books last week to be able to buy 2 more bookshelves. I know I had about 300 books.Thats without all the ones I have added that I want to read compliments of GR...lol I know half of them I have not read yet...lol
