Which E-reader ..."
I wish I knew. I've been looking into getting an e-reader myself, just for the many, many ebooks that I want to read that aren't available in paperback. I've been leaning towards a kindle myself. I have the kindle app on my laptop, and as I understand it,the e-books that I do have can easily be transferred to the actual kindle. I'm not sure if other ebooks work this way. A friend of mine the Nook, and I'll ask her opinion about ease, and cost of getting books etc.

I appreciate your input and the inquiry!

I have a Kindle AND a Nook but haven't tried any other readers. So my answers are based on what's best of these two.
Which E-reader do you think is the best? I don't care about color.
I'm looking for:
ease of reading screen? Kindle is a touch clearer but both are excellent
well lit screen? no eInk reader is backlit and most do not have a light included. You'll have to have a book light for reading in the dark.
amount of books available? Kindle
best prices for books available? both are about the same but Kindle seems to feature a lot more publisher specials with FREE books.
number of free books available? see above
ease of holding/most comfortable? Kindle is much lighter in weight and easier to hold for long periods of time
Also important to note... if you do a lot of reading out doors in bright sunlight like I do in the summer, you do NOT want anything backlit or you won't be able to see. Kindle is better for that because all of the Nook controls are on a smaller second screen that IS backlit and as I found out this summer, can't see a thing to do anything besides reading without going inside first
Also important to know... Kindle can't do ePUB which a lot of pubishers see as the standard. ePub can be converted to Kindle format if it is not DRM secure. If your local library does eBooks for lending, and you get a lot of books that way, in theory PF and epub books from the library work on the Nook. I say theoretically because I've had MAJOR issues getting it to work right on my Nook. I've cecked out a lot of eBooks from the library and have only managed to get ONE to work on the Nook. And when I hadn't finished it before itwas due back and I checked it out again from the library, I could not get it to work on the Nook the second time.
Also good to know... Nook currently offers SOME lending of eBooks, if the publisher allows it. Amazon does not yet but they are supposed to have that feature soon.
If you have a Nook with wifi and you take it to your local BN, you can connect to the BN wifi network very easily. When you go to the shopping home page, you can sometimes find special coupons for use in the store and you just have to show them yor Nook. Also, you can read most books FOR FREE for up to one hour a day while IN BN. I actually read an entire book that way, over the space of a week.

Thanks so much everyone! Kelley that was awesome!!

I grabbed a comparison sheet. It showed product specification, storage capacity, ability to read your eBooks on multiple devices, how to browse for content, battery life, content available, audio, other cool features, and in the box.
The Kindle tied or beat the others in every category except: check out books from public libraries, reading books in B&N store (obviously), lending eBooks (though the Nook says only up to 14 days), and being able to play Sudoku & Chess.
As those areas aren't the hugest priority for me, I told my husband I want the Kindle on my Christmas list (with a cover). He was thrilled, bc he knew it meant free books, but also bc that helps takes a chunk out of the shopping he'll have to do. :-D
Thank you again for all of your feedback. Hearing from you, your experiences, etc has helped ease my mind in my search. I know that all the devices are great in their own way, and having all of your feedback in my head when I went to play today really helped. I feel as if I asked better questions, and was able to interact with the sales person as a more educated consumer.

Well I'm glad Kelley was able to help. My friend with the Nook only told me that she hasn't had any issues with it yet. She does wish that she'd purchased a kindle instead however because of the free e-books, and she's 'heard' that amazon's customer service is easier to deal with. So, that's no real info to base you're buying decision on. Sorry!

Can the kindle books be converted so that you can read them on the nook? I've googled for some info, and found a link to a sight that supposedly converts ebooks, but the link didn't work. I got a Nook for Christmas, but have book kindle books and nook books on my pc. Help!

If they were bought from Amazon, then no they cannot be converted. All of the eBooks bought through Amazon are DRM protected and can't be converted. You have to break the DRM to do so, which is technically illegal though many people do it and there is software out there somewhere to do it. But I've not wanted to try it and se eif it would work.
The reverse is the same. If a book is bought from BN, it cannot be converted for Kindle for the same reason. They DRM protect as well.
If a book is non-DRM, you can download free software for conversions. I use mobipocket for anything I want to convert for Kindle and I use calibre for anything I want to convert for Nook.
Non-DRM PDF files will work on both Kindle and Nook. Adobe Digital Editions DRM books can be read on Nook but not on Kindle at present.

Thanks Kelley!

I wish I could help you. I've the kindle for pc app since October, and I'm not sure what devices you could transfer your kindle books to other than a Kindle. Sony E-reader?

Whispersync is used to synchronize your devices that you HAVE downloaded the book to if you go from device to device you'll never lose your place in the book, provided you have your wireless turned on. But if you don't put the book on that device, it won't have anything to synchronize to.

Megan,
I don't know if you know or not, but you can download 'Kindle for PC' without any cost to you. I have wanted a Kindle, but can't afford it right now. I recently discover (because someone offer a free book - Kindle Format - here on Goodreads) that you can do this by going to Amazon. I have been buying the Kindle visions because they are less expensive. Not to mention the instant gradifacaton of having the book. So...if you are planning on buying a Kindle anyway...
