Crestmont main character Gracie says “Sometimes we must trade loss for happiness.”

I did! Post polio syndrome, a late-life extension of the polio I had as a child, pulled my singing career to a screeching halt. I mourned the loss of creative expression through song. The idea for Crestmont popped unexpectedly into my head and the happiness I found was expressing myself through writing. You can browse the author page on my website for more information. http://hollyweiss.com/about-the-author.

Now I am an advocate for the Global Initiative to Eradicate Polio. Polio still exists in 4 nations. Join us to End Polio Now! http://bit.ly/fG2RJp

I welcome any comments or questions about my story or my writing process.

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) Oh my goodness, Holly. I hadn't realized that polio is still around to hurt children. I see that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is making matching contributions. Very nice.

When I was a child, in the 1940's and 50's, there was a lot of fear regarding polio. I don't remember when the vaccines became available. Mid 50's?? We weren't allowed to go to the public swim pool for lessons, so I learned to swim quite late.

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) I will certainly make a contribution. Some of my relatives say they do not want Christmas gifts (except for the children), so I will send their 'gifts' to the polio fund.

Yes, the vaccines came out in 1952 - 6 months after I contracted the virus. Much fear was sweeping the country. I appreciate any contribution you feel you'd like to give when you go to the Rotary site to contribute it looks like you have to belong to Rotary, but you don't.

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) Hi Holly,

The Rotary site is defective. I tried to donate "other" which they have listed and I listed an amount, but a sign came up that said I must choose one of their dollar amounts. I wondered if they didn't like my suggested amount, so I tried a larger amount (greater than their minimum $100) but it wasn't one of their listed amounts, so they wouldn't take it either.

Jeanne, I have egg on my face. You are absolutely right. Unless you have a certain dollar amount, Rotary makes it difficult to contribute. You can contribute directly to the Global Initiative to Eradicate Polio, but you have to send a check to Switzerland. Why do they make it so hard?

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) Not your fault. I'm not going to send a personal check to Switzerland and I think an International money order costs about $20.

I think the best thing would be to write to the Gates Foundation to see if they have a way to collect monies that aren't specifically $100, $250, $500, $750, or $1,000. After all, they are matching donations so I know they are interested.

And hey, I'm a writer and potential donor -- and I live in Gates Foundation Country, so why not ask?

Hi Holly, What a marvelous idea how "One Voice Lead to Another." I feel that happened when I stopped singing professionally at age 27 when I married for the first time. Dave did not support my career as a singer, which lead to major life changes. He was very insecure and thought my being in rock bands would cause marital discord and problems. So my path changed dramatically and I became a business owner. I see how change is good if I can embrace it.
I told Dave once, "I'm dancing as fast as I can..." since what he wanted me to be felt like an act of marital violence and a violation of my free will.
We learn about ourselves in many ways, and in your case it was life-changing polio.
I think your book idea is fantastic.
