Cathy After reading some of these travel books I really want to travel more but as a single female I'm not thrilled by going by myself all the time. I've only been on one tour and hated it. I've traveled in conjunction with volunteer groups and also language learning and that was great. Anybody have any other ideas for traveling?

Lisa (lisalovestoread) | 14 comments My idea is to take the plunge and do it alone! That's what I've done, in many countries, and although there were a few scary moments here and there, we have those in the U.S.A. too. The benefits are amazing - great experiences, many of which you can't have if not alone, meeting people you might not have talked to if with a companion, and increased self-confidence. Go for it!

John My folks swear by Elderhostel trips, which aren't strictly limited by date-of-birth as they had been.

Jane Spencer | 11 comments Can I ask what tour you traveled with? I am also traveling solo and am going to check out GAP Adventures. Last February I traveled alone to Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam) and it was very safe. I hooked up with a Vietnamese Travel Co for tours and in Cambodia and Laos I was a tour of one! I had the time of my life.

You might try Friendship with Cambodia's socially responsible tours: www.friendshipwithcambodia.org

Hi, I'm glad to hear GAP Adventures is good - I've been looking at them. My tour was a University sponsored tour to China that was really just an extended shopping trip. I've also traveled by myself a lot, but I have more fun sharing trips with others (and the husband doesn't travel). Thanks to everyone for their suggestions; great ideas.

Earthwatchaddict | 2 comments I have done 10 volunteer trips with Earthwatch. A lot of people are traveling solo with them. Always felt very safe and loved getting involved. For example, I went to Kenya twice. Once I did a lion project and the second time was Elephants. I also have done two archaeological trips, one in Peru and one in Italy. Great way to travel.

I've traveled alone in Cambodia and Vietnam--in fact, I'll be back to Cambodia this winter for a week solo. I was happy to have been on a tour first, though, because it let me get my bearings.

Well it depends where you go. As I said, these countries were safe. I didn't wander too far at night, cause you have to be sensible, only go in real taxis, stay in decent hotels etc.

Cathy Wow, what a great group of people and suggestions. I just had time today to check out "Friendship with Cambodia," Earthwatch and Elderhostel. Each one appeals to me and I've joined mailing lists and checking out offerings. These are the kind of ideas I've been trying to discover.

You can see discussions of trips and volunteer's pictures on eons.com by searching Earthwatch. You can also post questions there. It tends not to be a very active discussion group but there is some interesting information available.
