Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments OK, I'm not sure that we will actually do any of these activities at our cabin (see post #35), but it is in the right area of the country and coincidentally a lady we bought bought chairs from mentioned this book, so there you go! Will it work? The Foxfire Book: Hog Dressing, Log Cabin Building, Mountain Crafts and Foods, Planting by the Signs, Snake Lore, Hunting Tales, Faith Healing, Moonshining

Works for me! Just be sure you mention those same commonalities so the moderators understand the connection.
And if you should happen to do any hog dressing or log cabin building - let me know how it goes:)

The dresses for hogs aren't so bad, but they object to high heels.

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments You laugh, in my distant youth my extended family included some "real" farmers, subsistence farmers, and I saw some of the hog dressing as a little child - not a pretty sight, with or without the high heels! Now if I can just find the book.

message 56: by chucklesthescot (new)

chucklesthescot I think the highlight of the year for me was finally getting a new cable TV service just in time for my favourite sporting event to start-Ashes cricket!!! So I'm going to read a cricket book to celebrate!

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments So I have literally been thinking about this task since it was posted trying to think of any experience that stood apart as the best memory of the year. And then boom, it hit me in the face today, and honestly, I can't believe I only just thought of it. The FIFA WORLD CUP! I mean seriously, I became obsessed with soccer. I watch about two games a week, I search the news for recent articles on my favorite players 5 times a day. I stopped my life to watch the World Cup. I mean, honestly, it changed my life... even more than my college graduation which also happened this year. Or the cross-country move I made that lasted all of four months.

Anyway, back to soccer... I love it. So for part A of this task, could I read Soccernomics: Why England Loses, Why Germany and Brazil Win, and Why the U.S., Japan, Australia, Turkey--and Even Iraq--Are Destined to Become the Kings of the World's Most Popular Sport or a similar book about soccer?

Sure that sounds like it fits just right with your description.

I was totally hoping for the USA to host it. I have guys from High School who are proposing a 2014 class reunion in Brazil so who know what will happen!

travelgirlut | 58 comments One of my great memories of this year was going on a cruise with my sister. Would A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again: Essays and Arguments work? It has one essay about going on a cruise, but the other essays are on other topics. So while the cruise essay will remind me of my vacation, I'm not sure about the other ones since I haven't read it yet. (Though the cruise essay is over 100 pages long, so would that count by itself?)

I am fine with the book.
I do believe the requirement from the moderators is that you read an entire book, not just one essay. I bet there is an answer to that question in the "rules" thread.

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 260 comments The most positive experience I had this year was celebrating my daughter's first birthday.

Could I read First-Time Mom : Getting Off on the Right Foot--From Birth to First Grade by Kevin Leman?

Sure - a year one birthday falls within that age range:)

Yes, you can definitely read a book set in NYC.

message 69: by Zimbellina (new)

Zimbellina | 108 comments The most positive experience I had this year was reconnecting with my best friend from 5 years ago. Long story short we're both into Buddhism, wanting to learn more about it, so can I read Basic Teachings of the Buddha? It would remind me of her (and I'd probably talk to her about it after I read it!)

message 70: by Christine US (new)

Christine US (christineus) | 575 comments Sure, that's fine. Just be sure to explain when you post what you explained here so the moderators understand the connection between Buddhism and your friend (rather than just reconnection with an old friend)

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments my most positive experience this year has been watching a good friend take the steps they need to transition from male to female. she's told her co-workers, then her family, and has started hormone therapy. it's been such an amazing journey to get to watch, it's something she's been wanting to do for decades but was always afraid to do. i'm in such deep admiration of her courage and positive attitude. i was wondering if The Testosterone Files: My Hormonal and Social Transformation from Female to Male would be acceptable for this task, even though the book is told my a woman who transitioned to a man? it's still about gender re-assignment, just the other way. thanks so much! :)

I am fine with the book. I imagine there aren't a lot on the topic, so the fact that you found one is impressive!

Valorie | 817 comments My mother is a member of two different clubs, one that knits sweaters, scarves, etc. and one that sews clothes, quilts, etc. for families in need. I helped her Knit Wits & Crafty Ladies groups this year make some things. It was my favorite memory this year. Could I read Death Threads or Died in the Wool for this task?

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Could the positive experience be something as mundane as baking? I always find myself drifting to another happy world when I bake. The same happens when I'm driving and singing holiday songs (during Dec only). All the rain disappears and all I see is a beautiful winter wonderland like in the holiday tv specials.

Yes, that would be fine. It doesn't have to be a heart-pumping event, just as long as you were happy and had a positive feeling during one of your baking sessions.

message 79: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) The biggest event that happened to me in 2010 was graduating from fashion design school. I had to create a senior collection, which took many months of hard work, and involved learning many new techniques. Could I read a nonfiction sewing/fashion book such as Couture Sewing Techniques or The Basics of Corset Building: A Handbook for Beginners?

message 80: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) I just realized The Basics of Corset Building: A Handbook for Beginners is only 84 pages, so obviously I can't use that, but the question still stands - could I use a book in a similar vein (that is over 100 pages, obviously)?

message 81: by Christine US (new)

Christine US (christineus) | 575 comments Yes, a similiar book would be fine. It doesn't have to be non-fiction -- if you can find a fiction book about a seamstress (or the like), it would be OK too

Ms.soule (mrssoule) One of my favorite memories this year was taking my husband and our 4-year-old son to my favorite sushi restaurant and watching them both devour a sushi platter together. We've made it our favorite family restaurant and have gotten to know the Japanese staff. Can I use one of the books from the Boys Over Flowers series by Yoko Kamio (神尾 葉子) for this? It's by a Japanese author, the plot location is Japan, and while I don't think they ever go to a sushi place, they do frequent Japanese restaurants and discuss various styles of Japanese cooking.
