Yeah, pretty sure. >.> I don't mind 90+ weather in the summer, or even the spring. But definitely not in the winter. I hardly have any time to wear all my cute winter coats and scarves and such!

I THOUGHT YOU PEOPLE WERE SMART ENOUGH TO GET IT.
Clearly, I completly overestimated your intelligence.

I usually don't make reviews while I'm still reading the book, but I thought I'd record my thoughts for this one, as a movie is in the making and the 3rd book of the trilogy comes out tomorrow.
This is a record breaker for me, so far. I am TEN PAGES IN, and thus far have noted:
1. 1st person point of view (POV); a pet peeve of mine. I've read books where this isn't a problem, but...
2. ...it's also in present tense. Um, why? If I wanted to read a character's thoughts as it happens in the moment, I'd read stream-of-consciousness writing. As it is, stream-of-consciousness kind of scares the crap out of me. So "in the moment" thoughts, in short sentences or not, do not score points with me.
3. a female protagonist/narrator...a dangerous thing to do, as protagonists, or heroes, are pretty much by definition a Mary Sue or Gary Stu. This is necessary to have conflict between the forces of good and evil, but...
4. ...the female narrator is the "strong" one in the family since her father died, and she takes care of her mother and litter sister. This is very original, because it's not like we've ever had a Super Girl teenager in a young adult novel before.
5. the female ("Katniss"...which I don't suppose I can really complain about, but still) has an attractive-to-everyone male BFF, with whom she sneaks into the forbidden forest with...they're "just friends" but already it is BLATANTLY OBVIOUS he is a love interest (a, not the; we still have time for a love triangle)--we are on page TEN, and he wants her to RUN AWAY WITH HIM AND HAVE BABIES TOGETHER.
6. Oh yeah, they're 16.
6a. Okay, it's a young adult novel, but...still.
7. She's 16 and he's 18...why are the males always two years older than the females? Or at least, that's what I seem to notice. And yeah, when I was 16, anyone two years older than me would be HOT. But um, he's not going to be fully mature until he's 27 or something, so...does it matter?
8. and I KNOW from the synopsis/summary that she sacrifices herself and takes her sister's place in the deadly "game" their oppressive government arranges. Again, this is a very original plot.
The last YA (young adult) book I tried to read (besides Harry Potter, which can really be placed in childrens, YA, or adult...depending on your own perspective) was Scott Westerfeld's Uglies. It's the only book so far on my recently-created shelf called "never-finished". I am stubborn by nature and usually trudge through a book to the end, no matter what, but...
I am TEN PAGES into this book and I can't see me liking it. It's kind of the same with The Naming, which I bought three/four years ago (I bought the sequel too, how intelligent was that?) when I WAS 16 and I haven't gotten rid of either of them because I paid money for them...but I'm afraid the protagonist will be a Mary Sue, and I've spent my time reading other things. Someday I'll read them and probably get rid of them. I only bought them because the 3rd book in the series had just came out, and I was craving something completely unknown and new to me, and the cover had an illustration of a potentially attractive male character was shiny so I thought I'd try it out.
And here I am, 3-4 years later...it's sitting on my shelf, collecting dust...just like Twilight is. Which reminds me, I need to dispose of that book somehow.
Back to Hunger Games. I'm not sure at this point if I'm going to finish it. I will probably continue on and try to witness some of the Mary-Sueness first hand, but...
I will say this: I take recommendations VERY highly. That's one of the reasons why I try to read so many classics--if I've heard of them before, they must be good, right? (...right?)
So readers & reviewers, if you think I'm being a stingy goat and need to give this book a chance, feel free to comment and I believe I will give it a shot, if I don't read it this week before it's due at the library.

Totally agree with this person. Forgot her name, though.

Also, Katniss is not a Mary Sue. At all. She's annoying as hell in the last book, but not a Mary Sue. And Katniss and Gale do not want to run into the forest to "make babies with each other." o_o They want to escape from the tyrannical government and the horrible and starving conditions in which they live. Of course, this girl wouldn't know that since she's only read ten freaking pages.

This, along with The Lovely Bones, gets my vote for "worst book ever". I don't just hate this book, I despise it. Not only has the author shamelessly ripped-off Battle Royale (and yes, she has), but she can't write.
The characters are godawful. Katniss is on the same level as Bella from Twilight as far as protagonists go, and Peeta is just an unlikable idiot. The cast is just terrible. I can't think of any characters I actually enjoyed reading about. Katniss is the ultimate definition of a Mary Sue and Peeta is pretty much a Gary Stu. Terrible characterisation, it's almost non-existent.
I don't understand why Suzanne Collins made this series teen fiction. It just doesn't work, and the only reason she gets away with it is because 90% of the deaths happen "off-screen", so-to-speak, and whenever we do see someone die, it's over in about a sentence (or a few short, maybe five word sentences). I seriously gawped at the description of the first kill. "I was struggling with a boy. He coughed. Red sprayed on me. He fell down. There was an arrow in his back." was pretty much it. Actually, I probably wrote more than there was. SHE CANNOT WRITE FIGHT SCENES. End of.
I don't know what else to complain about. Everything? Pretty much, but I don't want to go on and on because I don't want to waste any more time with this book than I already have. I hate, hate, hate this book. Honestly, I'd even say that this "series" is more overrated, and more undeserving of praise, than the Twilight "saga".
Please go read Battle Royale and wipe this tripe from your memory. (less)
