I thank Kevin for his support and look forward to loathing other musical ripoffs with him, in this thread and elsewhere across TC.

message 9: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I used to like REM and then three things happened:

1) Some people tried to anoint them as "important" for reasons that completely mystified me.
2) Michael Stipe seemed to believe the people who described the band as important and began acting like a low-rent Bono,
3) They started to suck.

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments REM was my favorite American band of the 80s. I like melody, and they are gloriously melodic.

Sarah | 13814 comments I loved REM through the 80s and the 90s. I'm not into the recent stuff.

i always confuse the people who have no photos. i'll look at something and think: did michele say that? it's not like her. and then see it was someone else without a photo.

by whom? the song is "losing"

message 20: by Félix (last edited Nov 24, 2010 07:48PM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh I know. I just was just commenting on how many people spell "losing" as "loosing." It had nothing to do with the current topic or the song. Sorry. It was lame, I admit. Please disregard.

I'm following your train of thought, Larry. Do they think loosing - rhymes with choosing?

message 22: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) No, but loosening rhymes with choosening.

Anyone else think immediately of the episode of "Friends" where Phoebe was giving haircuts to the gang?

Monica asks for her hair to be styled like Andie McDowell's. Phoebe cuts it and Monica freaks out because Phoebe was confused and made it look like Roddy McDowall's hair.

No, I think more of how annoying her character was in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

I can't muster much either way for REM. Saw them open for Gang of Four in around 1982 and then headline over the Replacements a few months later and they didn’t make much of an impression. Anemic is the word that comes to mind. When it comes to chrome domes, give me Peter Garrett over Michael Stipe any day.

Or even Kevin Sprinkle.

Anemic. ::snort:: Right on.
