I used to like REM and then three things happened:1) Some people tried to anoint them as "important" for reasons that completely mystified me.
2) Michael Stipe seemed to believe the people who described the band as important and began acting like a low-rent Bono,
3) They started to suck.

REM was my favorite American band of the 80s. I like melody, and they are gloriously melodic.
I loved REM through the 80s and the 90s. I'm not into the recent stuff.
I'm glad to see Rebecca does not have a photo either.

I can't muster much either way for REM. Saw them open for Gang of Four in around 1982 and then headline over the Replacements a few months later and they didn’t make much of an impression. Anemic is the word that comes to mind. When it comes to chrome domes, give me Peter Garrett over Michael Stipe any day.
