Classic Horror Writers: Need some help with Lord Dunsany

I've decided to read some Lord Dunsany, but I'm not sure where to start. I'm looking for more of his darker stuff. I was hoping you guys could visit amazon or something and suggest some titles that are reasonably priced. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You're in the US, right? So we're talking Amazon.com I presume.

This one is good (and cheap), combining two of his good collections in one volume: Wonder Tales.

An alternative (and slightly more expensive), combining another two of his collections, is this: The Complete Pegana.

Personally, I would go with the former which features many of his best tales and is more diverse. The latter is a kind in a psudo old testament kind of style but about a completely invented pantheon.

Charles, there is quite a lot of Dunsany available for free as Kindle ebooks on Amazon.com, if you are okay with that format.

Talking of Dunsany, anyone seen the film Dean Spanley based on one of his books? It stars Peter O'tooke and is excellent!

I read the book but didn't know there was a film of it. It seemed as unfilmable as Finnegans Wake.

The Ghosts is a good story. I think this is where Pullman got his idea of people with their souls following them around in animal shapes.

Lord Dunsany i hold in very high regard and Simon is correct with those Wonder collections. They have i think his most darker,superatnatural stories.


You might also find Jorkens first volume of 5 interesting after you are sure you like Lord Dunsany. There are many supernatural stories in that collection. One i read that was SF/horror and one i havent read called " The Walk to Lingham " that T.Joshi calls in the book he wrote about Lord Dunsany the most pure horror story of his.
