I have on my bucket list to learn a language. I actually want to learn a few with Italian and Latin leading the way. I have gone to the library to check out some tapes but they seem a little ify to me. I was consdering Rosetta Stone but they are $$$$. I thought about taking a course in college but my time and my residency are still negotiable.

BUT...

I just heard of this site
http://www.livemocha.com/
It is supposed to be just as good if not better than Rosetta Stone well better for me because its FREE!!! I just signed up to learn Italian. One feature I like so far is you learn with other people online around the world. If anyone else wants to learn Italian with me my user name there is mstera add me and we can work together.

It sounds promising and I'm always excited to learn something new.

Therese | 60 comments That is an awesome site! Oh no...I see another addiction coming on...

Seriously-I lived in Italy for a semester in college, and learned to speak the language pretty well (I had also grown-up listening to my Dad and uncles speak it)...now, pretty rusty...I see refresher course coming on...

Sydney (sydneyh) Wow. I took French for 6 years and haven't spoken it for years. This would be a great refresher. I'm going to have to check it out!

YAY!
Teri I think I found you, either that or I sent a friends request to some random stranger:). It's a fun site I stayed up way to late last night working on it.

Jackie (findingjackie) | 214 comments I would love to learn to speak Korean (dad's Korean but he won't teach us) so I actually have learning Spanish on the master list...way down the list.. this site might be an excuse to bump it up.

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments I'd love to learn German. I took 2 years in high school but only retained enough info to count to 19 (can't remember what 20 is) and ask where the toilet is!
I also have a uncle who lives in Belgium so I would LOVE to be able to understand him better wehen he visits.

Tera I am definitly going to check out that site. I was also contemplating Rosetta stone but was hung up on the $$$

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Wow! Thanks for the link Tera!!! Hubby wanted to learn... a language and we both said Rosetta Stone is too much! I'd like to re-learn French and perhaps learn German and Polish. (I think it would be great and give me more of a sense of my heritage as well as Hubby's, which I can then pass along to our children some day!) We'll both have to check this out!!!

PS Tera, you've inspired me to post my 'big dreams to do list' (like your Bucket List) on my blog! I'll let ya'll know when it's up there!

message 8: by Claudia (new)

Claudia ooooh this site is so delicious! It's perfect, now I can start speaking Spanish without adding in french words, and I won't feel retarded using formal spanish rather than the incomplete slang I now use. I'll be proper soon enough!

message 9: by Peanut (new)

Peanut | 149 comments I'll have to check that site out later. Thanks!

I did study abroad in Costa Rica and Spain but that was several years ago and my Spanish has gone downhill. I'm sure I'd get by if I was plucked out of the USA and put in a spanish-speaking country but my language skills certainly aren't what they used to be.

Leslie Hickman (bkread2) | 233 comments Here's another site/link for learning on-line.
http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/home/ho... to MIT Openware. Its course materials, etc to MIT classes (not for credit naturally) a friend in my tai chi class does their Japanese through them.

message 11: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Tera, I don't have a microphone on my computer, can I still take a course or do you need to be able to verbally speak with people?

message 12: by Tera, First Chick (new)

Tera | 2564 comments Mod
I dont think you need a mic. I havent had to use one yet. I guess it would be useful to talk back and forth but I dont think you need to do that other for yourself to hear yourself. But you can listen to the words being pronounced on the site and read them. The mic would just be a bonus if you wanted to talk real time with someone.

Mandy Thanks, Tera.

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments Hey, Tera.
I just finished my first lesson in German. "Die Frau ist dunn." (The woman is thin!) Anyway....I didn't understand the written section. Was I supposed to type a sentence in German? I totally didn't get want to do. Did you?

I honestly havent gotten to the writing portion yet. Im obsessing over the first part of the lesson wanting to memorize everything before I go on. Silly huh?

message 16: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments Not silly at all. I actually remembered more from HS Germen class then I thought. so the first part was pretty easy.

message 17: by Sydney (new)

Sydney (sydneyh) Roxy... isn't the number 20 in German zwanzig?
I'm stretching back all the way to 8th grade for that... but I think I still remember how to count.

message 18: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments Ah.....zwanzig!!!! Now I can count to 20!!!

message 19: by Holli (new)
