Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Does anybody know what came first, the movie or the book? Or was it a joint project, like 2001: A Space Odyssey?

I wasn't aware that there was actually a book and from what I can find, the movie definitely seems to have come first. Spielberg wrote the script and I can't imagine he would have the time to develop a script and a book concurrently.
