I have a TBR-Own Shelf which lists all the physical TBR books I have on my shelf. I am trying to widdle down that list before hoping into my main TBR list which has a large amount of books I do not own. And I'm trying not to buy new books until that list is much smaller.Could I use this task to look at my TBR-Own Shelf exclusively?
whew - I was going to ask the same question - I have like 3 different to-be-read shelves...one for normal books; one for a specific genre and one for a challenge in progress...lol!
I have TONS (literally hundreds) of books on my shelves at home, but I haven't yet cataloged them here on GoodReads. How should I go about this task? Estimate which has been there the longest? I know the last time I acquired books so the "New" part isn't difficult, there's just no "evidence" here on GR.
Katie, I'm in sort of the same boat. I'm using my oldest listed here on GR, which is really the intent of the task.
Okay great! Thanks for clarifying.I didn't think I had any listed on my TBR shelf here on GR (don't add books until I start them), but I just checked and I do have a few. The oldest one on the list is one I own so I guess that makes it easy enough. :)
I like the task a lot but I've got one problem for part 2...I do a lot of trading on readitswapit so my 11 newest list will change every few days! The books I wrote down on Saturday as my latest 11 are going to be totally out of date by Wednesday! Do I reserve those 11 books in a note here now, or pick from what is there the instant before I'm ready to start the task?*confused*!!!
I sort of have a problem all together with this task and maybe you can advice me of what to do. I will be spending this challenge in Africa. There is an American school where I can borrow books from their library, but it is a really small library. Pretty much all of the books on both ends of the task are not at my disposal. Is their any way I can take the top ten that I have access to on both ends?

I have a problem with the 2nd part of this task. I added a bunch of books to fit other tasks for this challenge and now they are all my most recently added books. Can I use the 11 that are dated before I started looking for books for this challenge?
Kim D wrote: "I have a problem with the 2nd part of this task. I added a bunch of books to fit other tasks for this challenge and now they are all my most recently added books. I wonder if it should actually be required because otherwise I could have just added any book I wanted to read and chosen it;)

I've been cataloging my existing books, alongside adding books that look good as I troll the various lists of the challenges. I've added over 30 books in December -- and today is December 4. I've added over 2600 books in the past year (!) The recently goodreads cataloged books have been on my off-line TBR list sometimes for years; and they are mixed in with genuine I-just-became-aware-of this book entries on the list. So I have some confusion as to how to do part 2. Do I pick a date and use 11 books from that date? Do I make a seperate list of new-to-me books that excludes the books I've had around for awhile but just now cataloged? Yikes!

The original intent of the task was to encourage you to read something new-to-you, rather than something you've had on a physical shelf for a while but have just added to GR. The book I picked for this task is one of the newest ones on my TBR-owned shelf, as opposed to my general TBR shelf. I hope this helps.

I don't use the TBR shelf here at Goodreads as a TBR shelf, but as a wishlist, so I don't own the books. However, I have tons of TBR books at home, and I keep a physical list listing them all in order of acquisition (I know I'm nuts, but I love lists). Would you mind if I used that list as opposed to the TBR shelf?
The book I'm planning to read was in my last 11 prior to the start of the new challenge -- I find myself adding books so quickly to the list as I read through the Completed Tasks post. I see above that it's OK to use the TBR last 11 as it was prior to the challenge...but how do we indicate that when posting. Do we just notate "in last 11 prior to December 1"?I'm not sure if I'm really asking this of Emily or the moderators.

As far as I'm concerned, just give me some info in your completed task post so I know what the story is. Up to Sue what is acceptable for the task - I just try to carry out the terms of the task description!

I don't have any actual lists of my TBR, however, I moved to South Korea three years ago and basically what is on my physical shelves and not yet read I consider my TBR (I have at least a bookshelf of unread books back in Canada, but couldn't even start listing them....)I have a very good idea of which 10 books have been on those shelves the longest. Can I use that as my list? And my most recent 11 purchases as my new TBR?

The new year is typically a time of out with the old, in with the new. This task will help get some books off your TBR list.
A. Out with the Old: Sort your Goodreads TBR list in descending order by date added (from oldest to newest). Out of the 10 books that have been on there the longest, read one written by an author that you've read before (if none of the oldest 10 books on your TBR list were written by an author you've read before, it's OK to pick a new-to-you author).
B. In with the New: Now sort your Goodreads TBR list in ascending order by date added (from newest to oldest). From the 11 books you've most recently added to your TBR list (at the time you are choosing your book for this task), read one written by a new-to-you author (if none of the newest 11 books on your TBR list were written by a new-to-you author, it's OK to pick one by an author you've read before).
