My name is Jennifer and I live in Florida with my husband, a spoiled cat and a couple thousand books.
I'm in the Chicago area, mom of two teens and public library fan. Every time I think I've read all of Agatha Christie's books, a new one pops up. My unofficial goal is to read all of PD James's books, too.I prefer books rated PG-13 or under. I don't mind flipping over a chapter of grisly stuff, but I'll pass on the freaky stuff. (Yeah, I'm from the midwest.)
I have very little time for pleasure reading, so when I do it has to be really good writing. I discovered British police procedurals many years ago with PD James and Dorothy Sayers and have devoured their entire catalogs. Have tried Martha Grimes and Elizabeth George but found them wanting in depth and structure. Cannot tolerate popular fluff like Patricia Cornwall and Sara Paretsky. On a recent vacation I read "On Beulah Height" by Reginald Hill and found the writing to be top-notch. He plunges in with the story, trusting the reader to be intelligent enough to get to know the characters through the exposition, without long flowery descriptions that sound like they belong in a romance novel. And what interesting characters, not to mention the challenge of understanding the dialect and colloquialisms. Would appreciate suggestions from other demanding readers.
I live in Texas and teach art at a high school. I love reading, and enjoy all kinds of books. However, my favorite books are English mysteries. My favorite authors are P.D. James, Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine, and Minette Walters. I just joined this group tonight, as I was looking through the list of groups, hoping to find something focused on the type of books I like to read. Looking forward to discussing books and authors we've already read, as well as learning about new books I might enjoy.
