Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Our next book, Truman, will begin 12/19. I will post the reading schedule shortly. Anyone want to lead the discussion? If not, I will do it. Please let me know who is in.

Hi Meg,
I don't want to lead (plus, you are such a GREAT leader for these chunkies), but I am definately in for reading and discussing. I've ordered my copy. :o)

message 3: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Well thank you. I ordered my copy as well, I hope it gets here quickly! I am glad you will be reading with us.

message 4: by Amy (new)

Amy | 59 comments I'm in. I'm so happy to see that there were others who were interested in reading this. I just got a Kindle a little while ago so I'll download this book pretty soon. It'll be nice to have the "chunky" book without the weight. :) It was a pain in the rear-end the last time I had to travel with my copy of The Count of Monte Cristo.

And, Meg, I'd be delighted if you led the discussion. If you're willing and able to, that is.

message 5: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments I'm in too! I am soooo glad to be reading this with a group. I worked for an attorney years ago, a much older man whom I really admired, and he raved about this book. I've been wanting to read it ever since.

message 6: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Yay this is going to be a great group!

message 7: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce I have the book already and am looking forward to it. Thanks Meg!

message 8: by Laura K (new)

Laura K | 266 comments Yay, glad that Truman is the next chunky read. I bought my copy at Halfprice books this past Saturday. I have never read a presidential book, nor any books by this author. And Amy.. I was inspired by your comments about John Adams that I bought that too at HP Books. I am looking forward to this group read. :-)

message 9: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments I ordered mine from Amazon Marketplace - $5 including shipping. Can't beat that! Looking forward to it!

message 10: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Laura, I loved John Adams.

message 11: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments As soon as I get my book in the mail I will set up the reading schedule.

Laura, I had forgotten that I wrote a review for John Adams. I don't usually write reviews but I couldn't resist praising JA. I'm really hoping that Truman turns out the same way. I'm already so curious about Truman that I was going to do some online researching about him. But then I thought, NO!!! I want to be spoiler free for the book. And, I think I trust McCullough enough to give us a pretty factual account of the man.

Also, just a bit of trivia for everyone, Truman is on the dime. One of my friends and I were trying to identify everyone on US currency (don't ask, apparently we were bored) and we got everyone except Truman on the dime. We had to make a phone call to get that answer. Again, don't ask... :)

And, lastly, do we have two different Laura's here? Can we use a last initial or something in reference to your avatar so we don't get too confused? Thanks!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Roosevelt is on the dime. Before FDR died, we had Mercury dimes.

Crap! I have some bad information. Thanks Elizabeth. I'll tuck that one away for future reference. :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I can't remember if McCullough addresses it, but Truman was not thought of very highly until fairly recently - maybe in the last 15-20 years. Maybe since McCullough's book came out, come to think of it. Even FDR didn't like him.

I guess that wouldn't surprise me. You could say the same thing about John Adams. JA was not a much loved figure in his own time either.

message 17: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Nov 16, 2010 03:49PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Well, perhaps that Truman didn't know we were developing the Atom bomb is indicative of how little was his political stature. They had to come tell him days before the decision.

message 18: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Nov 16, 2010 03:52PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) By the way, I should repeat - I really did like the book. I "read" an audio version several years ago and it is quite good. The information above is from talk in my household when I was young and watching The History Channel or other TV documentaries.

No worries. Yes, it appears there are two of us Lauras on here. I changed mine to read 'Laura K'. :-)

That's funny - my last name starts with K too! lol I'm always a flower though (except at Cmas, I turn into a grinch), so I was gonna suggest that people call me Flo.

Emily (ejfalke) | 576 comments Hmmmmm....maybe my dad has this book. *runs off to ask*

message 23: by Laura K (last edited Nov 18, 2010 07:56AM) (new)

Laura K | 266 comments That is way too funny, Laura! LOL.
I was trying to come up with a creative avatar name, but I was drawing a blank :-(-- among my best were Laura Labster or Laura Lee which is a variation of my full name, Loralee. In the end, I went with Laura K. :-)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Marialyce will be our discussion leader for this book! She will post the reading schedule shortly.

After Truman we will do Far Pavilions, and after that, Forsyte Saga.

Boy, will we be busy!

Elizabeth (Alaska) So happy for Forsyte Saga. I will keep my hands off until we're together!

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments I'm looking forward to Forsyte as well. Awesomeness!

message 27: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments PS to Laura K - you could be Laura Lab and I could be Laura Lily lol. I could be a lily while we're reading Truman.

message 31: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce Hi Everyone,

I am getting my book tomorrow so I will post a schedule by either tomorrow or Saturday. In the meantime please enjoy the Truman witticisms:

``The voting booth is the most valuable piece of real estate in the United States of America.''
``There is nothing more dangerous than a liar in public office.''
``No man can get rich in politics unless he's a crook. It can't be done.''
``I never saw myself as president. I was just in the right place at the wrong time.''
``Politics is a pretty rough game,'' making a distinction between ``rough'' and ``dirty.''
``Three things will ruin a man: power, money and women.''

Elizabeth (Alaska) Ought to post those comments on every state house door and every door in DC these days. Especially the last one.

Great schedule Marialyce. I like how you only have us having to read one chapter on the weeks of Christmas and New Year, since I'm sure some people might be traveling or have many other commitments those weeks.

Looking forward to reading this.
