No, just weird. HAH! ;)

So Called Classic Books That I Hate, Hate, Hate!"

Read the Blog. Truer words never blogged(?!?)! I feel your pain especially with Anna Karenina; I wanted to smack my head throughout the whole reading but I had to finish because I was young and dumb.

Can we add Joseph Conrad into the List? I know its impactful and the subplots to subplots are interesting(?), but come on! Enough with the putar-alam!

Syahira | 752 comments I do read romance novel. But romance has a lot of sub-genre; from that I read a lot of paranormal, historical, thriller, horror, action, adventure ect. The genre may focus on boy-meet-girl stuff but the subgenre made it more interesting/engaging than chic lit stuff which I hate the most. Even in Bookxcess, I don't go to the romance section since most of it was chic lits.

I don't like autobiography unless I'm researching about something. I don't like young adult like Gossip Girl-kind but I like some of them (usually with darker storylines)

I don't like books with a lot of fillers. As soon as I see this dozen of characters and tiny but dozen subplots (see Twilight series), I feel like throwing them into fire.

I like medical fiction but I hate zombie books... like really, some writers need to learn microbiology.. ish...

but I am extremely choosy with malay fiction... I think I have several books I like... mostly of the from Ramlee Awang Murshid

Zombie fiction is not about reality. I mean, c'mon, the dead are walking again. How realistic is that? Zombies are all about the braaaaaaaiiinnnssss

no la.. mcm virus yg buat org zombie.. come on la.. virus mati kalau host dia mati, buat la parasite ke apa, lagi cun... actually, ni pun satu hal jugak, writers yg tak baca wiki... apa la susah sgt nak google apa itu "HIV" and "AIDS"... nangis2 lecturer aku bila drama tv ada dialogue "Encik menghidapi penyakit AIDS"... -_-'' *epic fail*..

Again, it's not about accuracy. It's about people shooting off the heads of zombies. How they got to be zombies in the first place is rarely important in the books (or movies). Although a virus that turns people into zombies was used in Night of the Living Trekkies

message 159: by Ezlyna (new)

Ezlyna | 118 comments Oh, I just saw this long thread. I'm definitely not a book snob. I read almost everything cover to cover, no particular genre is looked down upon.

I think my preferences change with age. When I was young, I read many fantasy, mystery & thrillers. But now I prefer biographies & memoirs, religion & spirituality.

lol, thats why I like vampire fiction more. Hematology is my area of forte. Not microbiology, hehe.

Fasya (fasyahime) | 7 comments i guess i can considered myself as a book snob..even if the book priced low at just RM3,i will take a long time to pick one...so far all the books that i had bought whether at book fair or conventional bookstore had interesting synopsis and cover art..both must come together as one...
my love also evolve..previously,my interest is on magic like harry potter and vampire like vampire kisses.right now,I'm more into ghost, horror, crime and ancient myth like percy jackson series and the mummy by anne rice.i also started collected Anne Rice work since early this year.

i also interested to read and collect all classic literature like pride and prejudice and sherlock holmes.

haven't buy malay book for years since Balak Cun by Ahadiat Akashah last 13 years ago...wonder why??hmmm

Natasha (mamahaikal) | 81 comments Tried reading Malay books but usually did not finish..maybe Malay writers need more interesting plotline? I'm all for Made in Malaysia things but come on lah where's our Stephen King or J.K Rowling? Other than Ramlee Awang Murshid our book industry is overdosed with romance novels.

message 163: by Aina (new)

Aina | 6 comments I've never read any malay novels beside the sastera books for school. It's not that I don't like it. I just never tried and if I do, I don't know which book is nice and which isn't.

But I did pernah read this malay book with many short stories written by our young malaysian authors. It's called 'Atlantis Duniaku Duniamu' and I loved it so much. That was probably the only malay book I borrowed from my school library.

For english I would never read Twilight (and I know most of you won't) and books from authors that I have read their books but didn't like it very much.

Natasha (mamahaikal) | 81 comments Atlantis.. is written by our own Goodreads Malaysia member and my super senior in UKM; Nisah Hj. Haron!

Kak Nisah takde buku baru ke? YA fantasy is the in thing right now..hehe

message 165: by Nisah (new)

Nisah Haron | 145 comments Anyone who likes to read YA fantasy, are welcome to try Puisi Untuk Esdyzuar
Nisah Haji Haron. The best place to get this book is via Ujana Ilmu (www.ujanailmu.com.my). If it's not available. Please e-mail me : nisah dot haron at gmail dot com.

If you are willing to consider a historical fantasy, you may want to try Tawarikh Cinta. Don't be deceived by the title, the novel is definitely not a romance! (Also available at Ujana Ilmu : http://www.ujanailmu.com.my/pd-tawari...

Thank you.

message 169: by Natasha (new)

Natasha (mamahaikal) | 81 comments Maybe kena promote buku2 mcm ni. Saya tgk org Melayu lebih cenderung baca novel cinta sejak dulu. Or maybe orang Melayu belum terbuka minda nk baca genre yg pelik2 skt. Ingat dulu DBP aktif publish mcm2 jenis buku, sayangnya.

Nisah Haron | 145 comments Natasha, promosi itu satu perkara. Pilihan pembaca massa pula cerita lain.

Saya kadang2 suka baca novel yg santai2 tapi kadang2 saya mahu novel yg berbeza drpd yg lain. And I don't often find malay novels with different plotlines other than the romantic plots. Can anybody recommmend me good malay novels? Something different yet with good storylines and good writing?

Saya rasa saya takde sifat ni. Baca ikut suka hati. Kalau kebetulan buku tu tengah "hot", tak kisah. Kalau buku tu takde siapa yg baca, pun saya tak kisah. Janji hati sendiri happy.

Saya dulu ada penyakit sombong yang amat buruk ni, dah insaf (dua minggu lepas). dulu orang sibuk-sibuk sembang Andrea Hirata, siap keluar filem lagi tapi saya buat deeekk aje. Ingatkan nover cinta popular. Kini saya menyesal menangis tak berlagu. Kalau tak, mungkin dah boleh bertemu penulisnya pesta buku tahun 2008 :(

Saya tak akan review Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones tu tajuk versi HBO). Sebabnya sampai sekarang tak abih2 siri tu. Sampai dah naik bosan menunggu. Malas dah nak ikut drama keluarga sumbang mahram tu hehe.

Brandon Sanderson saya nak cuba baca. Ada siri buku Mistborn dia dalam rak. Belum sentuh lagi :)

Bahasa Tolkien sebenarnya tak susah, sebab bahasa dia dah kira moden. Yang menyusahkan mungkin sebab ada pelbagai nama orang dan tempat yang pelik-pelik. Kalau dah boleh kuasai semua nama-nama orang dan tempat yang pelik tu, senang aje. Lepas tu kalau jumpa part Tom Bobadil, skip pun tak apa. haha.

Ya, bab Tom Bombadil (bab 3? bab 4?) memang membuang kertas dan masa. Kerana Tom hanya mengulangi cerita yg pembaca dah tau. Exposition yg tak perlu di 'expose'.
