Strangely enough, the legend that I consider canonical would also (I think) be what Tom would be looking for. The series in question is Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy which is made up of The Crystal Cave (Merlin, #1), The Hollow Hills (Merlin, #2), and The Last Enchantment (Merlin, #3). The series was continued beyond these three books, but for some reason I've never been able to continue reading past these three, so I can't comment on the rest of the saga. This initial trilogy, though, is by far the best (and most believable) interpretation of Arthur and Merlin that I have ever seen.

Kris (kvolk) I would agree about the trilogy by Mary Stewart. Also the Finovar tapestry by Guy Garviel Kay really does a good job weaving in the 16th century parts of the legend.
