The first books my Thomas learned to read on were the "Bob" books I discovered when teaching literacy to adults at our local library. At first they were too hard, he cried so we put them away. A few months later, they were suddenly just right. We only used the first set because then he could move on to other books. An early favorite was Margaret Hillert, Dear Dragon. Super super easy read but with exceptional pictures and story. She wrote a ton of these earliest readers, most of which are out of print. I mangaged to find one for his Christmas last year and now that it's a year later I can't believe he's already reading level 5's! I thank Margaret Hillert for making that really difficult first few months reading for my Thomas possible. He was so frustrated at first. Having stories that interest him made all the difference. Maybe I'll make a Hillert shelf.
