Michael I think the title refers to the reader's illusions and hopes of an interesting or emotionally moving novel--which Balzac totally does not fulfill. Or maybe Balzac meant "Lost Allusions," because that is what the novel is made up of. Can someone, anyone, convince me that this book is good? Please?

Jesse if nothing else, the scene where lucien is composing a set of drinking songs to pay for the coffin of his dead mistress, who lies in the room.
